Zoom Education Has Failed An Entire Generation

As schools slowly return to in person classes, the education system and the students in it will never be the same. A year of Zoom classes and Google Meetings has forced teachers and students to adapt to more efficient means of learning at the cost of abandoning social circles. I interviewed students, teachers, and experts to help illuminate the uncertain future of education.

@@custom-r KZbin is great for context, it's great for seeing points of view. But the lack of peer-review and research citing on many many maaannny videos is terrifying. As well there's "selection bias" so while someone might be really into WWII history let's say- They'll pretty much only focus on that very narrow stream on KZbin because they are guided by their own self interest. But then lack broadening views of other contexts, where for example colleges will require you to complete "X amount of credits from various streams" in order to graduate so you don't end up being that guy that rambles on about Rommel ad nauseum, but can't tell you who Mao Zedong was.

@@m.a.118 My view is that universities were created in the middle-ages, which is a long time ago and nowadays they provide staff with jobs and also act as a barrier between people and the job market; it is the biggest problem in countries where education is costly but it's a problem everywhere and it results in division where the people who have graduated want to keep the walls up and defend the system because doing so will lessen their competition; it is in the interests of school staff and former graduates to argue that people need degree programs from universities because that provides the staff with a livelihood and it ensures that most people will never be able to try for the jobs that the former graduates are holding even if they could easily do those jobs. Nobody in the middle-ages could have envisioned the internet and how so much knowledge is on our fingertips now or how people living on welfare are more well traveled than adventurers in the 19th century. Now with this said, originally universities only taught a few select subjects like law, philosophy or theology and it is a testament to the archaic nature of the system that theology is still taught in state funded universities in many countries. Over time more and more degrees were added and, if necessary, the degree programs were inflated in size to fit the founding degree programs for symmetry. This is problematic because a smart person could arguably become a teacher in a year instead of five years and many teachers tell you that outright in private. Even if we accept that something like medicine, which is either rightly or wrongly associated with high responsibility, high skill and large amount of knowledge, should be taught the way it is taught now that still does not mean that degrees that people get to be able to break down barriers into public administration or even private sector jobs should be artificially stretched out to last several years and cost people plenty of money as well. There are many degrees which involve zero manual skills; just oral and written presentation. Instead of demanding that people gnash their teeth through five years of essay writing, reading arbitrarily assigned specific books for sources and hoping they luck out and interpret the instructions for their course work correctly and that they will get someone to back up their thesis they could just be given one book or manual which lays out the knowledge they need to fulfill the requirements of vocation X and then these people could go to work and attain the required knowledge using whatever channel they like. Once they have acquired the knowledge they could sit in for an exam lasting anywhere between hours or days. The model or blueprint, if you like, for this kind of learning and qualification is already in existence in at least some countries, where anyone regardless of their background can sit in for a foreign language exam for a small fee and prove their knowledge and skill on their desired level. It is assumed that it takes over 1000 hours of study to become highly proficient in a strange language but it may be more like 500 depending on your use of time, skills and motivation...however long it takes is ultimately up to you; there is no professor lording over you and giving you a failing grade because he or she did not like your looks nor are you anguishing over vague instructions, mandatory class attendance or people making your life hellish in your dorm or school. You don't have to take public transport, cancel hobbies and carry other people's weight in group assignments or follow them around to see if they leave a comment at the last minute that you have to respond to pass the course. There's no mind numbing lectures about stuff appealing to the slowest learner where you are almost falling in asleep only to be alerted halfway through to some snippet of information that you were not privy before.

@@petelee2477 I'm not sure if we're on the same page here but in my country at least you have to pass five years of university to get a master's degree and that includes numerous courses and a thesis; work practice is included in the courses. Theoretically, depending on the institution of higher education, you may be able to waive some courses based on prior work experience or study but it's up to the teacher to decide if they want to cut you any slack. I did not even mention these massive hindrances yet but if you want to study in a uni you might have to spend years just getting in and once you get in you might have to move to another town or even country to get your degree. My argument is that in many cases people should not have to apply to uni at all or pay money for courses; they should be allowed to sit in for an examination (for a fee or not) if they feel that they have the skills or knowledge to apply for a position that requires a certain degree.

I'm Italian, and my experience with online education is terrible. The teachers think that we like being in front of a screen, so they're charging us with even more online homework. There was a period during which I was in front of my computer for at least 10/12 hours every single day, even on our free days. Homework was just too much, and during this summer they gave us lots of book to read, and, even if reading is one of my favourite activities, I just wanted to re-live my social life during the only three months of freedom that we're allowed to live. I now fear going to school. I want my life back.

High-school Class of 2020 here, our year was cut short at the very beginning of the pandemic. We went on spring break, and never returned. We did online classes through teams and it was a DISASTER. My family was in a horrible financial state from the pandemic so I ended up working full time to help make ends meet while also doing online class. Of course the result of this was me going fucking insane, I worked at Walmart with an abnormal schedule to get all the hours available, which meant that literally every single day for nearly 6 months I was getting up and going to bed at completely different times. I would work 7am-3pm one day, the next 11am-7pm, the day after that 3pm-11pm, then another 11am-7pm, then a 7am-3pm...... it was ruthless. I gave up doing a majority of schoolwork beyond getting 50% because I just couldn't handle it anymore, they assumed because of the pandemic that everyone was just at home all the time doing nothing so they gave students MORE work than they normally would. I hated every aspect of my life, my job was TERRIBLE, school was literally impossible, I got completely fucked. It was mentally, physically and emotionally draining. I think working retail through the bulk of the pandemic really killed me on the inside, I can't really put into words how abusive of an environment it was. a few months after grad I couldn't even remember what classes I was in. completely worthless. I got literally NOTHING from school. I cannot think of a single life skill it has taught me. It makes me angry to think that I used to actually try pretty hard at it, I was an honour roll student, and for what? wasted effort.

I'm gonna be honest. I've only learned a couple useful things in my classes this year. Teachers are too strained and overburdened to teach good, consistent lessons. Most student's are uninterested in school. People that I've talked too compare it to a 9-5 job than school. All of the interesting parts about highschool, field trips, events, football games, pep-rallys, ect have been stripped away because of covid. And your just left with work. Baron, and nothing in-between. It doesn't help that half of the student's aren't actually participating and class. And most districts are just picking their noses making half-assed decisions that don't really benefit anyone or make sense. A shitty situation made worse by bad management and overbearing student's and teachers. essentially.

I had to do more work actually because the borders of when it's school time and when it's free time vanished. Teachers did more lessons than allowed, did them in our pauses, after or before our schooltime. They used the digital homework system to request work for under normal circumstances impossible times. Everything is documented, every little flaw saved and every moments of procrastination gets back at you heavily affecting your grades. I don't really want to blame our teachers here, they did a good job in a new situation, just lacking the ability to understand certain consequences in the cyberspace. This is a general problem with online school.

I didn't experience zoom learning, but one thing I have an issue with regarding school is that not everyone is gonna understand the same topic of a subject at the same pace. I always struggled with geometry and even more so with probability in school. But algebra? I was bored out of my mind that's how easy it was for me. Something like Khan Academy is amazing because it allows you to spend as much or as little time as you need on a given topic. Another thing that I've noticed on KA and other online learning platforms is that people really aren't afraid to ask really dumb questions. And I mean questions they had the answer to, if only they payed attention to the video lecture. When was the last time a student raised their hand when a teacher asked if everyone understands the topic? So it baffles me that there are teachers who elect to structure their zoom lecture as if it was a regular classroom.

My heart goes out to students also not just the learning aspect but life experiences some of the memories I have from senior year of both high school and college and summer breaks and stuff are some of my most fondest memories I will hold onto forever, and for people now to not get to experience that......is so very sad. Being raised youre whole live to look forward to these things, only to have the rug pulled out from under you

My school has been going online for an entire year until it finally openned 2 weeks ago. I have learned next to nothing, my grades dropped, I pretty much forgot everything from my french class and so on. The motivation and desire to learn just wasn't there during remote learning. It felt so surreal, useless and unfulfilling. Any psychological problems I had became much worse then before and I almost failed school completely because I couldn't force myself to even do the assignments. I was constantly tired, drained, addicted to video games... Before online school I was fine I was a normal student. It's like the whole year wasn't real, time flew by and I was stuck in an endless loop. I was also more anxious, having pannic attacks while going grocery shopping because seeing people didnt feel real. I haven't had this shit happening before. It felt like everything lacked reason. Its over now, things are better now but its like a whole year of my life got taken away from me. Online learning is terrible and in no way a substitute to normal school

I myself actually quit my school because of the horrendous methods the teachers used. Especially giving us 20 essays due tomorrow, and after that they didn't even count them towards our grade, the grade was basicall compiled of those stupid ass tests we did (with topics we never even had) and exams (with topics we never even had) that made up 50% of our final grade. I was pretty down and nearly actually had a panic attack because it was do damn much. I think the variance in performance really comes from the huge differences in how students optimally operate. I'm antisocial and introverted, and the experience of being at school was more stressful than the work itself. So, in a situation where I could control if people saw me and interacted with me, I was much more comfortable. Still, I easily zoned out and procrastinated my work, but the pandemic gave me a chance to actually work on myself. I went to therapy (well, more like called into therapy), got medicated for my anxiety, and had a lot more time to do things I enjoyed. I broke off toxic friendships and got closer to new friends, all virtually. So, when I came back to in-person school, I was socially and mentally much more capable. But of course, that's just one experience. Perhaps the majority of students don't perform as well virtually, but there will always be some that Zoom helped.

Man this whole thing is bringing to the front of my mind something that I’ve been kind of repressing - that we are all becoming socially starved. There are so few opportunities for organic traditional social interaction. We all exist to each other from a distance. If we disappear, it’s irrelevant because we don’t really exist to each other to begin with in a way. I miss feeling like a living human being.

I... don't think this is quite true. Let me try to expose my viewpoint, and apologize in advance if i misunderstood your words. Friendships (or any social bond) at a distance are, obviously, not quite the same as the "organic traditional social interaction" you are describing. Sure, you don't care if some dude on the internet just disappears from the fase of the earth, but that extends to people you actually meet in real life for barely any time. Would you deeply feel the loss of that one retail worker in some grocery store you went to once in your life and never came back? Probably not, and that has happened since there was enough people in the world for you to not know every single soul in your little village. It's not a new phenomenon. We have always existed to eachother from a distance, but now it's just easier to do so, specially with a pandemic that restricts our opportunities to meet people in person: which seems to be the only way some people are able to conceptualize real, caring relationships. But, i don't think that "lack of traditional social interactions" and "distanced relationships" are one and the same. You can have a relationship with someone via letters or emails or texts, and still feel the loss of that person you've never really met face-to-face more than someone you have met in person (ie, that retail worker from my example). Sure, if you have met them in person the loss may be way more deep and meaningful, because existing in the same space as someone has way more opportunities of making a bigger impact in their life- but that still doesnt make the letters you received and wrote back any less valuable as a social interaction, or any less meaningful. Perhaps i feel inclined to say this because i have lost a friend dear to me and felt that loss very deeply, even if i have only met them via a funky little app on the internet and we didn't even know eachother's actual name. Tldr; i think that how deep and impactful social interactions can be has nothing to do with how "organic" or "traditional" they are, and everything to do with the people involved and their actual bond. Sorry for the rant!

In early May, our school adopted a hybrid education, where people could go to school in person, or choose to stay at home. I chose to stay at home because it was simply easier for me to study for my APs and finals due to the extra time in the day that online school provides. Most of my teachers would have a separate camera that pointed towards their in-person class, allowing online kids to see what the in-person kids are doing. It felt so profoundly odd, seeing my peers interacting with each other in-person, while I sat at home in my room, silent, and without a smile on my face. I forgot how people used to just talk to each other. How every small interaction with each other brought such a sense of community and belonging. Meanwhile, I was sitting in my room. My desk is about 3 feet away from my bed, and all I have to do to go to school is wake up at the exact time school starts, and walk 3 feet over to my desk. Online school is just so... empty. Sure, it was easier for me, because it gave me more time in the day, but it just sucks the soul out of school. Before, a lot of my motivation to come to school came from wanting to see everyone, and be a part of the busy and exciting crowd. I remember waking up some days, genuinely excited to see all my friends and some of my cool teachers in-person. Towards the end of online school, I had no motivation to wake up for school at all. In fact, sometimes I would log onto my classes from my phone with my camera off, so that I could remain in bed. I would make up some BS about "wifi problems" (although that actually did happen quite frequently and it just added to the annoyance of online school), and sleep for the entire period. It's strange because it took me until January 2021 to finally come into terms with online school. I found a schedule that allowed me to focus on the things outside of school that I loved. It became oddly comfortable, and I was fine with ending the year the way it started. But when we went into hybrid education, and everyone else started going back, it kind of hurt, seeing how life used to be compared to how it is now. I even had a dream, where I was locked in some kind of closet, completely alone in the darkness. But between the cracks, I could see all my peers socializing without me, and it made me feel so sad. I woke up that day, and didn't even bother going to online school.

Really makes it hard to tell them your problems and frustrations, and sometimes, they even straight up tell you to "suck it up and remember that 'you are luckier than most kids out there'". Yes I am lucky, I know that. I’m a bit late but online learning was ironically what kept me sane when most people went insane. I never have had issues with learning or keeping up in class. It’s the one hour bus in, one hour back home that was the biggest problem for me. Having to get up at 6 am and only getting home at 5 pm or 7pm on some days that bled time of my day, time I felt I could use better. Most tasks were already done on a pc and turned in online anyway in school or at home after school. The ability for me to skip 2 hours or even all lessons that day, focus on just completing the tasks themselves and get on with what I wanted freed up so much time for me. Love the video and Glink, if you ever see this. I’d always be willing to be interviewed by you for whatever future projects you do. Keep the videos coming.

At the beginning of online, I was doing great and was paying attention. Then after a few months I start losing motivation to work hard, I feel like it won’t ever mater to me. I’ve since been not paying attention, barley getting out of failing grades, and always turning in late work. At this point I’m kind of lucky I haven’t failed this year at all, hell I haven’t even failed a single class. Online learning can be great, if done right. But if done wrong, it can destroy a persons motivation to work hard and make ‘learning’ something almost impossible.

(In Brazillian) When the pandemic started, i got weeks without school, then pre recorded videos and finally online classes. 2021 arrived, and my classes was jumping from: - a totally online (students and teachers online) - a hybrid (students online and the teachers in a empty classroom) - a "real" hybrid (students and teachers in the class and some students online) The hybrid and "real" hybrid classes are hell

@@Calypso504 yes! The teachers in my school pay literally no attention to the online students so if you get a bit behind, your screwed. They move around, and get so far away from their terrible quality mic that all you can hear is disjointed staticky chatter, and the in-person students chattering makes an awful staticky garble of nonsense that makes it very hard to concentrate. Half of the teachers don’t know anything about online, to the point where they will just completely forget to join the zoom, or start the google meet. Subs are the absolute worst, usually they’re muted, don’t turn the mic on, or join a half hour late. Also, screw seeing anything, cause most of them don’t bother to check if their cameras are actually pointing at the thing you need to be seeing, or if they’re just pointing at a wall. They assign a ton of work, and barley give us any info on it, and say to “not be afraid to ask questions”. Then they proceed to not answer literally any of your questions. If there are a lot of people in the call, you will randomly be marked unexcused absent. I was almost marked truent because of how much it happened. If you don’t immediately switch from whatever thing you’re working on and turn on your microphone and camera, or you don’t answer a usually quite hard question in 0.5 seconds, or you take 5 SECONDS to type an answer into chat because your microphone doesent work properly, you will be marked non responsive, which is also counted towards being marked truent. Fun. If you are slightly tardy because your previous teacher never excused the class (which happens a lot because usually we aren’t checking the time every 5 minutes) then according to them, you never showed up yo class, period. I have a nerve disorder which makes stress and anxiety signals be falsely transmitted to my brain as pain signals, so you can imagine that it feels like I’m constantly being stabbed. School only affects kids positively though, right!!!!! Oh, and one of the other affects of this disorder is chronic fatigue. My parents thought I had mono, because I was sleeping 18 hours a day. I wish I had mono, because that gets better after a few months. I fall asleep in class constantly, and being online reeeeeeallly doesn’t help that. Oh, and did i mention I literally can’t do school in person cause yay fun, apparently this thing also weakens the immune system, and amplifies the affect of illnesses, as it thinks that they are also pain signals so it would be even more excruciating of pain! !! !!,!! Yay my life is so great. I’m so sick of being told that these are “the best years of my life”. They aren’t. The best years of my life was when I was 10, and I hadn’t developed my nerve disorder, and I had friends. When I could be myself around people. When I could literally talk without feeling like I was being judged. When I didn’t have severe anxiety and depression, and the teachers actually cared about my well being. My life was ruined by moving schools, the pandemic, and my own mental health, it sucks, I feel like my “fun teenage years” have been robbed from me. I just wish things were simple again. Sorry if this was a lot, I just really needed to rant and get some things off my chest.

The social aspect in school is arguably more important to kids than actually learning material, the amazing and horrendous experiences, the friendships you develop and the memories you create are so, so important to your development and quality of life. well clearly what you said is just wrong, for example if we return to normal life and online learning is still a thing, we would had a different kind of school, a place where you would only do physical stuff, because all of the hassle that like show up on time, is just an annoyance for traditional school, like what if it's take a kid 1-2 hour to get to the school and he or she would had to wake up sooner than their friend 1-2 hour just to go to school thus their sleep time reduced, while if the kid can attend online class they only need to wake up on time turn on their phone or pc and done. Then another aspect of online learning is even better, if the student dont had time to attend the class, they only need to record the lesson, and if they dont understand that, they could ask the teacher later, and they only need to make sure that their grade would be fine at the test, so saving both time for the teacher and student since they dont need be happen at the same time. And since you dont need class any more the school would be transformed into a more sport oriented school, that support more sport and during that time the kid can just show up and only need to work their body out with all their youth energy and then they came home, having already socialized, and energy spent so the result is a more fit and well socialized kid. So yeah I feel like you are only clinging on the idea of "traditional school" is because you having thinking through how to work with technology.

When my school switched to online, I tried to do everything legit for a few weeks. That means not doing anything else during class and not doing anything non educational during school. That didn't last long. The zoom meetings just felt like an video that you couldn't skip through. You couldn't go back 15 seconds if you didn't understand something or skip ahead 15 seconds if you already understand the current topic. It all felt like a giant waste of time. I found myself learning more effectively using my own time and using resources I find on the internet. As the days went on, I started to stop paying attention during class. Instead I would just chat and play games with friends to make up for the lost in person socialization because of the lockdown. I would just search up answers in order to understand every single lesson and to complete homework. People would often cheat on tests because they just couldn't be bothered to learn the lessons, me included. It's been hard on the teachers as well. As the year went by, everyone could see the lockdown taking its toll on the teachers. Adding on the stress of trying to teach us students through the online platform and seeing such diminishing results, their mental health also aren't doing too good.

It's June now and I am going to need to make up 2 or 3 classes that I failed this year, which is so not me. The lowest grades I got were C's and even then I'd get them up and make honor roll 9.5/10 of the time. A whole year of my life just sped by and I was alone for most of it. Also, I have zero motivation and very little interest in anything. I couldn't focus on school, especially when I was on my own laptop and addicted to Genshin Impact (game) lolol. Luckily I didn't do much online schooling, my school did make us go in person with a mask mandate (you could only do online classes if you had covid or had a covid scare.) I feel like my life isn't going to go anywhere, and while I already pretty well knew that this pandemic has played a small part in it too. I don't remember ever having motivation for my future, but it only started bothering me when I was in high school. I graduated high school this year and am planning to go to college this August. Here's the problem: I'm not motivated, I don't know where I want my future to go, I don't think I have enough passion for my hobbies let alone doing them to live, I don't even want to go to college because it seems meaningless. A college degree gets you almost nothing nowadays, just lifelong debt. I'm honestly scared for my future. I don't think I even have a future.
