@GeraldUndone - at 8:29 talk about how you could use this with a wireless transmitter module to get 32bit flow wirelessly. But wouldn't the monitoring audio output NOT be 32bit? Since you can change the gain on the output, this leads me to believe the benefits of 32bit would not passively transfer through the built in output. Thanks for this video! I've been waiting for it.
@geraldundone4 жыл бұрын
Right, yeah, and you might run into line level vs mic level issues. My thinking was more for just monitoring. You still record locally on the 32-bit recorder, but you attach a wireless transmitter so you can monitor the sound wirelessly.
@david2431214 жыл бұрын
@@geraldundone Gotcha. Thanks for the quick reply. Here's a use: If you're syncing in post via Multicam Clip in FCPX based on audio, you could wirelessly shoot the monitor audio into your camera from afar, making syncing a breeze, sin timecode ;). I saw another comment asking if they could use a L/R channel 3.5 splitter to record 2 audio sources simultaneously. I was thinking- similarly to the use-case above, use your Rode (or w/e brand) wireless transmitter on one subject, and place the receiver on the other subject, receiving into the R channel. Then the other Lav, on the 2nd subject goes into the L channel.

Gerald forgot to mention one important detail. The tentacle track E has the option to change the plug in power voltage. High end lav mics like the DPA or the cos11d need 5 Volts. I don't think I'd want to work with 44.1khz, but getting stereo recording at 32-bit could be useful for a lot of people. A dual head lapel would help limit shirt noise ruining a recording. I do a lot of outdoors stuff with my main audio with a stereo lapel plus an Olympus LS-P4 recorder. There have been times where I needed to pick a specific mic to use over the other one or splice them in post. It's too bad the Zoom doesn't have a simple timecode solution. Hey Gerald, huge fan, love all your videos, I think you're one of the best video/audio reviewers anywhere. This is great. I know your focus is more on video and more on the basic consumer/prosumer side of things when it comes to audio, but I wish you could use your skills and resources to review more professional sound recording tools that net barely any coverage on KZbin (save for the legendary Curtis Judd) yet are used widely on professional sets, e.g. Lectrosonics wireless systems, Sound Devices 6 series and 8 series recorders, Zaxcom etc. I would especially love to see you comp the pro, $1000+ circuit of shotgun microphones: stuff like Schoeps CMIT5U, DPA 4017, Sanken CS-3E, Neumann KMR-81. These are industry standards on pro sets but the most I ever see KZbinrs (again, outside of Curtis Judd) go into is the MKH416, as if it's the only pro mic, when it's actually an older mic that Sennheiser has long since upgraded from with the MKH 60 and 8060 mics. Pro lavaliere mics, like the Sanken COS11-D, DPA series, Countryman B6, etc., would also be very interesting to look at! None of these are new, flashy products to market, but I just think there is a big gap for you to explore here and there is almost no one else I would rather see do it. Thanks so much! Keep keeping on. Love your channel

Very good. One point you didn't mention - Bluetooth control makes a huge difference when recording music performances as I have found with the Zoom F6 during the Covid pandemic. It has been possible to keep a good distance from the performers while still controlling the recording. I have been using the Zoom F1 for recording spoken segments but without bluetooth I have to leave the F1 on the subject and record the whole session of several segments without being able to switch off and on as needed. Regaining this control is why I want one of these two recorders you just reviewed. By the way, I find the Lavalier supplied with the F1 to be a terrific microphone and the F1 to be an excellent recorder, providing you don't use the auto levels feature. I hope that the F2 Lavalier is not a downgrade - maybe you could compare the for us?

What pairing scheme is used, what's the security mechanism, on the different Bluetooth option? Neither devices manual covers this which makes me very uneasy, it makes me a bit afraid it might be "Just Works" pairing scheme that would be pretty bad on an open set, would not some jerk f* with the devices. (Tentacle's manual suggest a device can only be paired if held close to the phone which confuses me, is there some low-audio syncing scheme involved?) Nothing I shoot is mission critical, but I still be pretty sad/upset to find out everything was corrupt due to someone playing around with their phones and mess with devices. Or just two different crews on same area accidentally pairing to the other crews devices. On other devices like headphones etc you typically have to do something to enable pairing, so it is Just Works scheme but only enabled when you explicitly ask for it.

We have lots of high end lav mics, like the Sennheiser MKE-2, MKE-1, MKE-40, ME-102, ME-104 and they are connected via the recorder to the wireless transmitter (SK-AVX, SK-100 etc.). But if there are any dropouts, we need a backup for the lav sound, that's recorded before it gets transmitted. Any recorder with inbuilt battery, that's not replaceable is a no go for longer documentary productions. And also it's important, that the files are not getting too large.

You've got the limiter, settable levels, and dual levels, so honestly the existence of 32-bit float recorders in a similar form doesn't make ours garbage. If you go home with solid audio, it doesn't much matter what recorder you used.

Thanks for this. How is the Zoom F2 battery door holding up?

Hello ! If i have Air Pods Pro, to use it with the F2, I have to buy the BT version ? Instead I have to use my normal (wire) earphones ? Thanks !!!

Absolute genius using the ad as the audio comparison test.

Worth mentioning that to leverage TC of the Track E, you need TC on the camera, and perhaps a Tentacle Sync E, if your camera doesn't have jamming capable TC input. Just sayin'...

Hey Geraldo, wont you ever review the Sigma fp camera? Would love that, thank you Gerry.

I would love it too

you forgot one big difference in your review. The F2 has only 2.5V phantom output while the Track E has 5V. If you want to use a quality mic like the sanken cos-11 or dpa 4060/6060 the F2 isn't an option as the both need 5V.

What are your thoughts between the Sennheiser MKE 2-EW Gold vs Sanken COS-11D? Looking to connect to my Tentacle sync track E with a TRS connector. The lav that comes with the Tentacle sync produces too much self noise than I'd like

I have a couple questions regarding the Bluetooth version. Could this version be used to bypass the need for a Lighting connector on an Iphone? If you could, would that allow you to record "wirelessly" at least for a short range (like for a KZbin video)? Such a solution would allow you to get around syncing the audio with the video.

They don’t allow Bluetooth transfer of audio. Even for AirPods and AirPods Pro, apple doesn’t allow Bluetooth microphone for videos. The quality is bad. Filmic allows Bluetooth recording from AirPods, but they let you know ahead of time that the quality will be like a telephone call.

@@ToddLloyd Thanks for the great detailed answer. That tells me I won't need the Bluetooth version. Gonna get one. It looks too convenient to pass up!

Hi Gerald, how would you rate the Rode Wireless Go compare to those two? Better or not? A comparison would be appealing :). Thanks for those reviews!!!
@PeterAlanJohnson4 жыл бұрын
They aren't really the same thing
@Liiiooo4 жыл бұрын
@@PeterAlanJohnson What do you mean by that?
@PeterAlanJohnson4 жыл бұрын
@@Liiiooo these are recorders, whereas the Røde is a wireless system, which requires something else to handle the recording.
@Liiiooo4 жыл бұрын
@@PeterAlanJohnson Now that you mention it you right. So then I guess the quality for the audio with the Rode would also depend on the camera that it is fixed on. I have to check then what quality would have need between the wireless go and a dedicated recorder as those two. Thanks for your answer, will dig into it or maybe @gerald undone will in a futur video?!

How exactly does the Tentacle Sync timecode ecosystem work? I have many different cameras from URSAs to Pocket 4Ks and Micro Studio Cameras that I use for multicam recordings. I like the idea to be able to sync different cameras via timecode and also use alongside TRACK E but what connection and protocol it actually uses for syncing? Maybe you can do a video on other Tentacle devices?

Tentacle have a youtube channel, they explain it there. Lots of other videos on youtube on the topic too, just do a search.
