Your 5th reason was the one I was hoping for because it is nice to have a visual of some sort to keep things in perspective especially when editing tracks. I guess thats why they make DAW'S right? Just a few notes about Scenes on the L-8. Not sure if these apply to the L-12. Projects only save one set of mixer settings; Master, A, B, C, etc. Scenes are saved with the console, but are *not* saved with the Project to the SD Card. If you load a Project, and then load a Scene, the mixer settings from the Scene will supercede the mixer settings from the Project. If you turn off the console via the switch on the back, the mixer settings loaded by the Scene will overwrite the Project settings. If however you eject the SD Card before turning off the console, the Project settings will be preserved. Scenes cannot be deleted without resetting the console to factory settings. (LiveTrak L-8 firmware 1.12)

Once setup and working it is a fantastic home studio tool for recording. I like the dual option to record live jams direct to the SDCard or record into a DAW. A pain to setup but once it is working a great tool.

I wish you could make a comparison video between this and the Tascam Model 12. You're really good at explaining things and would love to get your thoughts more than anyone's. I have the Model 12 myself but am so lost on the specialized functions of the 7/8 and 9/10 tracks and I'm sure you'd be the guy to sort this out for those of us lacking your "Brainiac from Smartron 6" powers! ;-) Cheers!

I purchased the tascam model 12 first. UNF it last one song. An there was a problem with the outputs both the monitor mix an main mix. If you turned the main slider things dropped out. An back in. Sweetwater took there time refunding my card after reading some negative reviews. I went with the Zoom L12. It works great. Be sure to pay attention to this video an other as they are really helpful. I can say that I liked the features on the tascam better. For me being able too assign tracks to input 1 to 1 thru 12 was really nice. For instance you can record multiple guitar parts with one track. An not have a spaghetti mess of cords. Just reassign the any one of the track's 1 thru 12. No need for a patch bay or multiple cords. I have a friend has the 32 trach tascam model an I'm going to pick it up as well. If you look at the very end of the review the tascam models are more prone to problems out of the box Me I think it a Sweetwater issue.? I lost time recording an $$😢. Good luck hope this helps you😊

Features are great but the master point is : the quality of preamps and converters. That's why lot of experienced producers never check that kind of products (we pay the features). it's better to sacrifice features to invest money in professional preamps and converters : audio interface without all that features . Thank you for the vidéo !

Well, a single professional pre-amp can cost as much as the entire LiveTrak ... but can I suggest you come back with actual test results to compare the converters on this unit to the ones available in something like an Avid or Apogee interface?

Love your vids man! I was tossed up between purchasing the Tascam Model 16 or the Livetrack L-12... but Zoom just dropped the L-8 for $399. Same features, plus some new ones, as the L-12, less inputs of course, and battery powered option for mobility. It’s geared towards podcasters and mobile musicians. I initially wanted the Tascam Model 16 for its analog circuitry, more inputs and feature flexibility. Even though it jumps $200 in cost compared to the L-12, I think it’s totally worth it. However, with Zoom now having a lineup from the L-8 through L-20, I’m hoping Tascam drops one more counsel with 8 inputs since they have a lineup from 16 to 24. I would pay $399 - $499 for that. For the time being I’m going with the L-8 and love the fact that manufactures are producing mixing boards with high quality recording features integrated in one. I think if you are DAWless or use a computer setup, you can’t go wrong with these tools.
@MatthewStratton
@MatthewStratton 5 жыл бұрын
If the L-8 is anything like the L-12, which it looks to be, then $400 is a good deal. I know it has different uses, but the Zoom H6 is still going for $330, so a bit more money for some more inputs and the 4 headphones out is a good deal.

I also use it like it a lot. On my channel is a tutorial on how to use the headphone outs as send channels for external fx devices. But one very big problem with the L12 is, you can only record one take to each channel. Overdubbing deletes the previous recording. This is annoying because you have to decide which is the best take right after the recording.

Simple solution to overdub issue: export audio file for track to USB stick. Overdub. Save every new take to USB stick if in doubt, or just keep the ones you are sure are better. Then load in the best take on the track and use that. I don't have one myself (yet), but that seems very easy according to the manual.

🎶 Hi Matthew ... do you know what the preset settings are for the onboard compressor .. i.e. ratio / attack / release times etc.?! Also could you do a tutiorial say using a vocal mike and demonstrate the minimum and maximum settings using the compressor knob... 🎙 good stuff thanks ...
@sadmachinesaudio6462
@sadmachinesaudio6462 4 жыл бұрын
As ist is a 1-knob compressor it is likely a method akin to the DBX Overeasy function. That means that these values are reduction dependent. The harder the compressor works, the less extreme the settings are and if you use it lightly the settings are little more pronounced. That makes for a well-rounded and musical curve most of the time. I am an avid DBX 163x user and own a L-20 and I haven't noticed a major difference in function between them. Besides the character, of course. The Zoom comps are very clean sounding and the 163x are... not.

The L-20 actually gives you 22 separate inputs. Each mic jack is one track, and the two stereo inputs are two tracks each (Left and Right.) The Master output also comes in as two tracks. So yes. You can record 10 sources at once, and each goes to a separate track on the DAW.

@tomwilson2112
@tomwilson2112 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, motorized faders would be a step up... but probably add significantly to the cost. I actually got used to the way the faders work pretty quickly; they're fade-through, so you have to adjust a fader to the set point indicated by the LED before it changes the mix. It honestly only took me a few minutes to get used to how these faders work, compared to the motorized faders on the Allen & Heath mixers I use.

@@moxmultiverse4034 Thank you! That sounds like great advice! @@Pharesm Always hard to say at this price point hey. I haven't got one (yet?). Guess we will have to wait for the critical reviews to roll in. Seems like highly positive consensus on the L-12 from what I've read so far though. I mean, you either need the versatility/limitations achieved through this particular config. or you don't. Zoom has had a track record of making sturdy, albeit plastic-y stuff for a long time now.

@@moxmultiverse4034 I went with the MixPre 6-II now, for quality of sound as well as build quality for portable recordings, since my SQ-5 is too heavy and AC-bound to drag it around... I have a Zoom L-12 digital mixer, and I'm a little bit confused about how to set the mid EQs on it. It has a channel strip and you can adjust the EQ for each channel for High, Mid and Low. However, for the mids it also has a 'Mid Frequency Knob' (which is the one above the Mid knob in the pic below). In the manual it says that the Mid Frequency Knob 'adjusts the central frequency of the mid frequency equalisation'. So presumably you turn that dial to choose which frequency you want, and then you use the 'Mid' knob below it to boost or cut that frequency. However, what I'm confused about is this - let's say I choose the 1k frequency, then I boost it up a notch. Then I choose the 2k frequency, then boost or cut that. Now what happens to the 1k frequency I previously adjusted? Does that stay boosted or does it then reset when I select another frequency? The manual isn't very clear on this. Is it possible to boost/cut multiple EQ frequencies on the mids on the Zoom L-12, or just one at a time/one only? Thanks.

When using the scene function, how does it handle (further) changes to the faders/dials? For example once the scene is loaded and I want to turn ch1 up or down.... does it jump to the fader 'value' as soon as the fader is moved, or do I have to move the fader through the setting of the scene (to "capture" control)?

Hello. You have to move the fader to it's saved position before the fader has an effect. The two lights that are lit next to the fader when you change the scene indicate the relative position of the saved fader level. Yes, it is a "capture" control operation.

@MatthewStratton
@MatthewStratton 5 жыл бұрын
It really depends on how you want to work. For example: if you have the MPC X in standalone, you can plug the audio output of the X into the L-12. Then, send MIDI out of the MPC X to your sound modules, and plug the audio out of your sound modules into your L-12. That way you can record your MPC X and 2 separate sound modules on their own tracks in the L-12. The laptop complicates things. I need to know is your goal to record onto the SD card of the L-12 or do you want to use the L-12 as an audio interface? Are you using the MPC X in controller mode?

Can you use Phones Monitor outputs for stage monitors? What are the downsides for doing that?

Question , is the internal FX , when recorded , how is it fixed on what wav files? add to separates? or in master ?
@tomwilson2112
@tomwilson2112 4 жыл бұрын
The FX are recorded to the master track but not to any of the individual tracks. Your individual tracks are clean recordings (no effects or EQ), and if you need a master with effects, you'd either add those back in with your DAW or you'd mix down to a master track in the recorder.

I just bought a used L-12 from Guitar Center, and it shows a firmware version of 2.20. However, the latest version on Zoom's website (and anywhere else on the Internet) is 2.14, and when I try to install 2.14 I get a firmware version error. Could you please help? Thank you.

Question... If you don't need all the cue mixes, given that you can only do one effect at a time, could you use a cue mix as an extra send to an external delay and bring it back into a channel? Then you can mix it as a global or individual cue mix.

Help please, this is driving me crazy; I want to send the main mix out through the L&R XLR outputs to the main amp but have three different mixes going out to the monitors we use for the players in the band. How the heck do I do that?

Although the Soundcraft MTK 12 is different and has less features, if you compared only the features that they both have, how would you rate them head to head? I have a few of the same gear that you have and was wondering if I should maybe streamline and maybe purchase this. Keep the content coming!👍

I really like being able to record to the SD card on the Zoom L-12. The Soundcraft doesn't have the option. Other then that, the soundcraft sports AUX outs rather than having multiple headphone sends. It also has two group channel which can be useful. The MTK 12 has more options for USB returns as well, which may be to your advantage if you want to use the console with a computer. To me the L-12 is more flexible with the ability to record to the SD card and to the computer. If you record to the SD card there are even overdub options.

I was on the fence for a lightweight, small footprint mixer between this, AR12c, and dp24. Your video really helped clarify the choice of L-12 for me. Really appreciate a good review, and going into more detail than others. Keep up great work!!

Hi Matt! I am considering getting an L12. I do a lot of different types of gigs in my community.....one of them being a Karaoke DJ. My software is Virtual DJ for running karaoke files. I use a presonus audio interface connected between my laptops usb connection and the interface itself. I run out of the interface into my current Mackie 4 channel mixer then out of the mixer to my powered speakers. Using this mixer, can I eliminate the presonus interface and just use my computers USB connection to L12 connection to send music to the L12? I'm just trying to eliminate the extra piece of equipment if it's not needed. The Virtual DJ software recognizes the interface in a pop up window when it;s connected giving me a choice of other possible interface/output connections....so i was wondering if the L12 would show up in the Virtual DJ's list of devices to connect to? Thanks!

Can you assign windows apps to one of the channels? Like Discord to Channel 3 and another windows app to a different channel? Much like the GOXLR can?

How is this L12 do 5 different headphone mix without a motorized faders? I'm used to a Yamaha O1V digital mixer with motorized faders. When you recall the scene, or switch the headphone out channel (they call it Omni channel out), the fader automatically moves the preset position. I just can't visualize how it will work.

Does the individual headphone mix work when the L12 is being used as an interface on a laptop? Or is this only for other applications? Sorry, very new to this interface!
@MatthewStratton
@MatthewStratton 4 жыл бұрын
Yes. You can still use the functions of the L-12 like normal when using as an audio interface. One of the pluses about it. Keep in mind though that if you want to monitor your computer through the L-12 you will need to use the USB return on tracks 9/10 or 11/12 on the L-12.

Hi Matt. On the recall scene section, I noticed the level values change from scene 1 to scene 3 but only saw the led markings change, not the sliders.. are these motorized and shouldn’t they change to same level the led states are showing?

Nop. Not motorized. that led indication means your previous slider was there., so that u can re adjust your level

When used as a USB interfase does signals are sent to the computer printing the compressor, eq and fader or is it sent flat and unaltered PFL (prefader)?
@MatthewStratton
@MatthewStratton 3 жыл бұрын
Channels 1-12 are sent through the compressor only when using as a USB interface. The master channel shows up at 13 and 14 - this is the actual mix of the mixer.

Aesome, thanks Matthew! Question: Can you use the headphone outs as sub mixes? I'd like to route certain tracks over to external loopers and grooveboxes. I have heard mixed information on if this is possible with a quality enough and loud enough signal being sent over to the headphone outs. I understand they are TRS stereo? Thanks!

Really good video Matt. I have a couple of questions that I can't seem to get answers for anywhere else? Is this a powered mixer or do I need a power amp for live performances? And can you explain the method of using tracks 9/10 or 11/12 when using this as with a DAW? Thanks Matt!
