Thanks for your comment - I’ve just trailed mine across Europe documenting my band’s European tour by clamping it to anything I can find with a SmallRig magic arm. I’m using a power bank and USB cable to get over the appalling battery life and I’ve been able to record all of our live shows so far. I could easily go for 4-6 hrs on a single charge. Game changer!

I just ordered a Q2n and have been looking at many of the instructional videos on KZbin on these recorders. Yours is by far the best I have seen yet, very easy to understand and it is good to know that when mine arrives I will be able to go back to this video for help in learning how to use it. I am a drummer and I wanted to get a simple but good quality video recorder so I can record some drum videos as well as with my band. Thanks, very good job!

Hey Rafik and thanks for your very kind comments which are much appreciated (and I'll pass that on to Ethan!). Tip - get a set of Panasonic Eneloop Pro rechargeable for your Q2n - I am now getting over 4 hours recording time from a pair of these (when compared with less than an hour on standard Duracell's) - has made a world of difference. Best wishes bud.

This i smy second comment on thsi video, well done for demo of the FOV! Nobody does that! Great sound when you were with the acoustic, and gain only at around 4? It looks like about 5 ft away? With Wide lens? Good settings for singer/songwriter vid, could zoom in a touch too, to make it an "intimate" video but still get the singer and all the guitar in........ This is the best review of this product. I bought the 4K one, love it!

Thanks Scott - appreciate the comment. Check out the latest band rehearsal videos on my channel taken last week with the intention of showing people how well (or badly) the camera would perform in a medium sized rehearsal room with dim lighting and 4 very noisy musicians. Pleased to say that it surpassed my expectations and the back-up sound recording I had made of the session on my Zoom H1 was not needed - quite incredible really! The only shots where the Q2n was not used was the close up PIP shots of the drummer - everything else including the sound was the Q2n. The only disappointment so far has been the battery life which has been awful and nowhere near the 2 hrs advertised by Zoom - lucky to get an hour out of a fresh set of Duracell's. Not that bothered as I'll probably try rechargeable or just plug it in but still a bit of a let down. Overall, very pleased.

By way of update to my previous comment, I am now using rechargeable Panasonic Eneloop Pros and getting over 4 hours continuous recording time (on the Q2n's lowest settings) which I am very pleased with. Even on higher audio and video settings, there should be enough juice to comfortably record a full gig or rehearsal.

Terrific review, I'm about to buy one. One of the uses I need it for is recording acts at Open Mic. The fact that it can take a feed from the mixer is fantastic, as with my current old camcorder the sound is ruined with the sound from patrons chatting while the artist is performing. Hope you can advise more on using it with a mixer sometime soon.
@topdazzle
@topdazzle 6 жыл бұрын
Not much to say John really - just take the stereo out of your mixer into the line in input of the camera and you're golden! The camera takes a 3.5mm stereo jack into its line in - the other end of the cable will depend on your mixer and where you are taking your out from - it could be a pair of RCA's, a pair of 1/4" jacks, etc. - it should give great results for what you want.

Hey, thanks for this very helpful video. I got mine earlier this year and have recorded a few KZbin vids. According to your vid, I got the video settings correct, which is great. The audio was a problem, though. It's been clipping when starting a song and I couldn't find where to fix that. I had the AutoGain on CONCERT, but apparently, I need it on OFF and to control it with the dial. We'll see how that goes. Thanks again!
@topdazzle
@topdazzle 5 жыл бұрын
Cymbal Killer Thanks for the comment - yes, personally I would never use the auto gain - just make sure your peaks are around the -6 to -12db range and you should be golden. That’s a good signal to noise ratio and should give you max flexibility in post processing if you want to boost your audio (I usually normalise my tracks to -3db).

@topdazzle
@topdazzle 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Dan and thanks for the comment - enjoy your new device - they are great. You have two options for computer transfer, either plug the Q2n in to your computer with the lead provided via USB and set the device to "Card Reader" mode when you get the option on the Q2n's screen (this comes up automatically when it senses that it has been plugged in to a computer) or just take out the memory card and plug that directly in to your computer - either works really well but I found that taking the card out is far quicker than trying to read from the Q2n - worth bearing in mind if you have a lot of long videos to transfer.

Perhaps this might be obvious to others more familiar with HD video cameras but what is the file type (& how are they formatted on the SD card) of the video files created on the Zoom and how are they named? Hi T This video is out of sync; sound precedes the video. Did you record the video using the Zoom Q2N? I've got a Zoom HandyCam Q2HD which exhibits the same problem. Hence my reason for looking for something else. My question - apart from a concern about syncing - is for low light recording. I try to record bands at open mics in pubs where the lighting is often very poor. How well does this Zoom model cope with low light? The Q2HD is supposed to be good at it but it sadly isn't.
@topdazzle
@topdazzle 7 жыл бұрын
Sorry Brian - I don't know what you mean about it being out of sync - it all looks ok from my end. As for the low light - I have only tried it in the studio which is fairly dimly lit and it coped just fine.
@BrianSmith-ow9gy
@BrianSmith-ow9gy 7 жыл бұрын
Viewing on a Dell laptop; that might be the cause of the syncing issue. The only way to prove the low light claims is to get one from Amazon and send it back if it doesn't come up to scratch?

I have the exact same issue. I believe my problem is that my computer is too old. I have WIN10 on it, but that doesn't help. I took the Q2n to work and tried on a newer computer and it came right up. To get around the problem at home, I bought a Micro SD Card USB Adapter and it worked great. I never did find the exact cause of the problem, but this workaround is fine for me. Mine looks like the one in the link, but there are many other varieties. @topdazzle
@topdazzle 5 жыл бұрын
Jack Duffy Hi Jack and the short answer is that “it depends” on what you want to do, what software you have and how proficient you are. For my purposes, the audio straight out of the camera is so good that I just normalise peaks to -3db in Premiere Pro and maybe use a bit of compression (rare) and I’m done.

@@topdazzle Thanks for the reply, If I wanted to do a bit more, say add a bit of SoftTube's Saturation Knob or some reverb before uploading to KZbin would I do that in video editing software like Premier Pro or somewhere else? Thanks for the help.
@topdazzle
@topdazzle 5 жыл бұрын
Jack Duffy You can do basic stuff directly in Premiere. For anything more advanced or niche, you can send it out to Adobe Audition, edit the audio there using whatever you want and then bring it back in to Premiere to carry on editing your video. This is all part of the Adobe workflow - loads of vids online explaining how to do this. Jason Levine is the best of these in my opinion.

Hi, you did a great job with this review, really thanks a lot, you definetely suggest this one over a gopro right ? I need to get a camera for live recording in my house, 2 guitars and one voice, what do you think ? Should i get the Zoom q2n instead of the Gopro ? I never did live recording so i need something simple with a good enough quality. Thanks again.

@topdazzle 6 жыл бұрын
If recording good audio is important to you (which it sounds as if it is) then there is quite simply no contest - forget the GoPro. I love GoPros (for what they were designed for - they are superb) but the Q2n is designed for something very different and excels at what it does - the audio quality is superb in my opinion.

Is there any way I can record vocals with the mic while simultaneously using the direct in with a backing track as well?
@topdazzle
@topdazzle 7 жыл бұрын
No - using the direct in immediately disables the built-in mics. The best way to achieve what you want is to mix the vocals with a backing track in a mixer then take a stereo feed from the mixer into the direct-in on the Q2n, hope this makes sense! You would only need a small mixer (say 4 channel or something like that - they are very inexpensive).
@CjKillinit

topdazzle awesome thank you, i ended up goin with a gopro silver 4. I already have a zoom H6 that im gonna feed into the mic in as the mixer.
@topdazzle
@topdazzle 7 жыл бұрын
That should give good results - I think the key to getting decent quality is not to rely on your GoPro for the audio - that is not really their strong point. If you can go the dual-audio route as you suggest then that will give better results. You might also try just using the H6 on it's own without plugging it into the camera and then syncing the audio in post (which is what I do now and which is giving me much better results) - there are lots of videos on KZbin explaining how to do this.

This is a great review mate. Good info about the light on the front going red if you clip, I didn't know thtat! (as obvious as it seems now..) The only things I struggle with are.... recording yourself with a guitar, alone....you can't see if you're in the frame or not, or how well positioned you are etc (like you can with the phone because you see the screen and position yourself accordingly)...also, as you want the ideal level, as you said, around -12db, you can't see that either.....so how do you know? any tips? Only thing I can suggest is either position a mic stand or similar roughly where your head will be and frame from there or, slightly more complicated, link to a laptop via USB as if you were going to stream (video tutorials available on this) and then frame from there using the laptop screen to check.

Great video! I have been recording live and my videos come out with no sound. Only a couple of vids have come out with sound. I have to admit the sound is great. I have turned the side knob up and still no sound. What could be my mistake when recording my band live? I installed a 128 Gig card.

Very strange - the only thing I could suggest is that your gain control is not set properly - try one of the presets ("meeting", etc.) instead and see if that helps?

Thanks! I also deleted the content recorded and formatted the sd card. It has recorded with sound since. As for playback on a laptop media player I had to install Quicktime. Thanks again for your vid and response.

I am considering a Zoom Q2n as a means to easily record my sets when busking outdoors & for bar gigs (mostly acoustic guitar & vocals with some looping)...Thanks to reviews like yours and others online, I already have a decent idea of its usefulness for bar gigs, but I am worried about the condenser mics being too sensitive for outdoor recordings...Any thoughts on if this product is right for me? If so, do you have any recording tips when using the Q2n outdoors? Thanks in advance!

Hey Davide and apologies for the delayed response - I don't know how I missed your comment! Don't worry about the sensitivity - it is totally adjustable if you use the manual gain control - if you're outdoors I would highly recommend getting a "dead cat" for the mics though - otherwise all you will hear is wind noise. Also - think about getting a small, cheap tripod to get it set up exactly as you want. A couple of sets of Panasonic Eneloop Pro rechargeable batteries will easily get you a through a day's busking - if you use regular Duracell's you will be lucky to get more than an hour (depending on your settings) - not good. I would get the video camera as close to you as possible - with the wide angle lens this is very easy. Other than that - you should be good to go!

No worries for the delay - I ended up buying it after asking my local vendor if I could test it outside before purchasing (I had brought my own batteries, SD card, dead cat, and gorillapod). Happy to say I am extremely satisfied with the purchase so far (though like many I can't for the life of me understand the logic behind the gouging accessory pack/lens cap on this product). Thanks again for getting back to me & for the tip on the Panasonic Eneloop Pro batteries!

Just a little tip. Instead of changing batteries 2-3 times in 4hr gig (1080px30, 44.1-16bit), grab yourself one of these USB power banks for $11. They will power your camera for about 20hrs on a charge!!! I use a hair band and some velcro to secure it to the tripod on with a short USB cable to the Q2n. I can turn it on at the start of my gig and basically forget it for the whole show. (www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MWU1GGI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

Or just get a set of Eneloop Pros and record for 4-5 hours without all those extra connections and hassle!

Hi, I've seen others say that but I want to understand how this works. Two AA rechargeable batteries will be about 4,000 mAh (give or take). A smaller portable powerbank will be about the same if not smaller mAh. How can it provide power for ~20 hours while even a good pair of AA rechargeable can only do 2 or 3? Maybe my math and knowledge on how batteries work is not sufficient.

Is the sound quality about the same as the older XY mic setups??.....in other words is this just a remodel of the older models??...I have the Q3HD.....

capeheartriz I have no idea I'm afraid but I'd imagine they would be comparable. See if Zoom have frequency response and noise floor data available on each on their website and that should give you a good idea.

Hi my dear friend, this was a joy. A very helpful joy :-). I have a question to you as a trustworthy expert musician. I play on 8 Alchemy Crystal Singing Bowls. Not only to steer but i really play music. That is an amazing experience for me and for people. Which configuration do you find the best for this kind of "concert"? The other instrument which i like to use is a metallophon. Extremly playful: you can use everything te create sounds. Please my dear friend, help me be the best :-). Thank you so much :-) Sugandha🎇

Thanks for this review, it is very informative. I tried my Q2N out recording just myself & an acoustic guitar. Sounded really good, but when I try to play it back with movie maker or media player etc I only get the video! works okay if I play back with iTunes. Any suggestions as I want to record our band and upload onto Face- book & youtube.Thanks Graham

Graham Peebles Hey Graham - first question - can you see the sound file beside the video file in Movie Maker (i.e. the waveform)?

No. I have down loaded VLC media as recommended on the zoom forum. I now get audio but it sounds like gibberish and is slow.

Can I plugg a mic to record sound from my boos katana amp ? Thank you
@topdazzle
@topdazzle 5 жыл бұрын
Depends on your mic - you will need it to have a 3.5mm jack plug on the end or else use an adapter to get it to 3.5mm. Alternatively if your amp has a line out or headphone out then take a 3.5mm feed off that directly into your camera.
