Zooming in on the young star in the reflection nebula IC 2631

This video journey starts with a view of the spectacular southern Milky Way and then closes in on the inconspicuous southern constellation of Chameleon (The Chameleon). The final image shows a detailed view of the blue reflection nebula IC 2631 around the young star HD 97300.

Note that the dark nebula extending down and also slightly up from the bright one is actually all part of the same one nebula. It is a cloud of dust and possibly gas(es) that is dark when not illuminated by a star, and bright blue when it is.

This is something a lot of people miss, nebulas are just stars lighting up the dark Smokey debris that is burning of dirty dying stars.

Lots of things to see here. 0:18 across the top, near the right corner, is globular cluster NGC 4833 0:22 nearly the same position, another globular cluster, NGC4372 0:35 the edge-on spiral. also in the same position, I dont have an ID for that. The reflection nebula is bright blue for the same reason that cigarette smoke is blue. It is made of dust particles about the same size as the wavelenght of light, and thus "scatters" the light.
