Also, "ever since the Big Bob-omb got his paws on the Power Star" sounds like something an uninformed soldier would say. It's war talk. Plus, it gives a canonical explanation as to why you fight the Big Bob-omb more or less the same way you do Bowser: because he was created by him! Holy shit, the layers.

As a Mario 64 content creator BOB is one of the best levels to create stuff in or around so BOB is awesome in that regard too, it has almost everything you can need, a tall mountain, a floating island, a gate, small mountains, the chain chomp witht he gate, the Bob Ombs, a bunch of enemies, it's really great And I'm also a programmer and considering this is the first big 3D game I'm absolutely amazed of how this game turned out to be, it has sooo much stuff that many people don't appreciate or even don't even get to know they could do even after a run of the game. I really love SM64 and the amazing stories that form around it, and all those little details, amazing :D Also you can throw a Bob Omb to the Chain Chomp xD

Bob-omb Battlefield actually carried with it one of the biggest mysteries from my childhood. I grew up with the DS version of SM64 as my second game ever, and as I climbed up the mountain for the first time, the climb was very smooth. But as I entered the level for the second time and climbed the mountain again, I noticed something very odd: suddenly there were holes in the path! Like, you know, the little pits with the cannon next to them. I didn't remember them being there the first time, so I thought that must have been a case of the level changing when I got to the second star. But as you should know, that path never changes. The path up the mountain is always the same and always has those holes. For a while I thought it was just a thing that was only different on your first run through the level (much like the Bowser submarine I guess), but then on another save file the holes were still there... so I just thought it was the first ever run on the cartridge, until I realized that made no sense either. For a really long time it was in my head as an unexplainable vivid memory, a Mandela effect... until surprisingly recently I remembered that on my very first run up the mountain I got curious about the little nook in the wall and went into it, so it teleported me. So in other words, the reason I never saw the chasms in the path on my first run... was because I unknowingly avoided them. Possibly my weirdest video game memory.

I grew up with the N64 version and very nearly had the same thing happen, but I happened to look at one of the holes and wonder what the purpose was when I saw a cannonball come out of it. I thought that was all they did and that it was just an explanation for where they come from, maybe even trying to one-up the NES The Legend of Zelda for its rocks that inexplicably fall from Death Mountain until you're at the top and then they just disappear. It wasn't until the next level when I raced Koopa the Quick that I accidentally discovered their purpose. I hadn't remembered the map well enough yet, was not even close to mastering the controls, and I tried to climb the slope that he ran up with ease, so he was already well on top of the mountain as I was scaling it. I decided to continue anyway, to get some practice in since it seemed like it was going to be a tough climb, and I noticed one of the two holes. Thinking it would be funny to go all the way up the mountain just to run inside and get hit be a cannonball, I stepped inside ... and teleported to the bottom of the mountain! Had I not remembered the hole from very recently and been goofing around, I definitely would have dismissed those holes and forgot about them for a long while. And yes, I did piece it together and use the warp to beat Koopa the Quick. I felt a little dirty about it, but also wasn't sure that it was possible to beat him legit at that point, so I was okay with it. To be fair, I would have tried the cannons first, but didn't trust my aim with them yet!

@playbossthebest9363 жыл бұрын
Indeed, it's such a brilliant way to start the game. This area feels like home after 5 minutes of play, how about that?! Its main path is straight forward but it's not all there is of course, and thanks to the moderate size and clear objectives (how can you resist to climbing the mountain or interacting with the chain chomp which is in the middle of the main path you're already following) exploration is quite comfortable. It's also really easy to get anywhere in no time, which is not achieved in every Mario 64 stage. This in not my favourite 64 stage (that goes to whomp's fortress) but it's definetly close and for the first level of the first collectathon it couldn't have been much better than this. Congrats 👌

Fun fact; No matter if you're not familiar with English or videogames, it's almost certain that your first star will always be defeating King Bob Omb, I know this because back then not a lot of my family knew English or videogames but they always got the first star as intended. I think this is because humans tend to always look for the highest mountain and is no coincidence why they placed a mountain in the first level with the first star. Well... that and... that there's not a lot of options in the beginning, my point still holds since you're actively trying to scale the mountain first playthrought

I think as a kid what appealed to me the most about Mario64 is how many different things mario can do compared to the 2d versions. Sure he has new moves in every new game but this was probably the biggest leap forward. In addition to Running, Jumping, Swimming, Long jumping, ground pounds, and backflips. Mario can punch, kick, pick things/enemies up, put them down or throw them. Climb poles and trees, handstand on the top, kick off walls, sneak up on sleeping piranha plants, crawl, dive, and even lose his hat.

Now imagine being like 10, after years of 2d gaming, playing something like Mario 64? Growing up in that era was so cool in that each new console was drastically different. As someone who speedruns Mario 64, while I would say that BoB is not my favorite stage to do, I still think it is the best designed level in the entire game. Not to say that the game gets worse from there, but BoB's design is just absolutely phenomenal. This stage is a perfect of ''Show, don't tell'' and considering that it's one of the first 3D games of its kind is quite impressive. Definitely worth the ''revolutionary'' reputation that the game gets. Despite Mario 64 having aged a bit over the years, BoB is still fun to play to this day.

I can look at these things intellectually and appreciate the craftsmanship, and I still enjoy playing the game regularly, but I just can't *feel* it the way I did back then. You only get introduced to 3D gaming for the first time once. And honestly, I wonder if the feeling of it is anywhere near as mind-blowing for kids these days, now that 3D games are the norm. Surely it's still a great experience and fun to play, but I can't imagine it's the same as playing it for the first time in 1996. The context is just so different. Thanks for helping me remember how it felt. This analysis puts into words the spirit of encountering SM64 for the first time, and of the N64 era in general.

I can't believe I never pieced the extra cannonball and koopa together! I noticed that they were added, but thought it was just to show you that the levels can change when you go in them to get harder or more interesting. That's such a great dash of flavor, and makes me wonder what other additions like that I never noticed! Also, it's clever that they put the sign about camera controls next to the wing cap block since that's exactly how you enable the level for that cap! I always thought the placement for it was odd, but noticed the coins and thought that was all since it's quite a while until you can unlock the wing cap from the first time you encounter it, but now I see it was some very nice priming! Just odd enough that you question it, but just explainable enough that you dismiss it, but the two remain connected somewhere in your mind!

SM64 is one of those games I simultaneously love and hate. I love the designs and the theming of the stages, and while I was a lot better at the game as a kid, it's just really hard to play these days. A slight combination of the lack of motivation when it comes to slogging through the first few levels every time I start it to get to my favorites, and the archaic, sensetive af controls that constantly screwed me over even back then. If this level analysis becomes a full series, I am super excited for that prospect! Also nintendo... put Super Mario 3D Allstars back on sale. i may have it now but i want more people to expirience this game i just love it that much! also thank you anyone who took time outta their lives just read this THANK YOU and WAHOO!!!

@ZoomZike 3:01 I think the word you were looking for is 'intangible', not invincible. You can't interact with the block at all yet, you just move through it as if it wasn't even there. If the block was invincible, it would just be a solid standard block that can't be opened or destroyed.

Man, I really enjoy these level analysis videos you've been putting out recently. They're really informative and make me look at the level in a different way. 22:20 Well, I mean, it also is the greatest game of all time lol

😱 Never in my entire life of playing, and re-playing this game did I *ever* know that you could run around posts to get coins (I never even thought of the possibility) - I always thought the 100 coin star in this level was impossible without the wing cap, since I was always short without all of the coins in the sky 🤦🏻♂️

The day wasn't a blast, but this video gave it a funny fuse tho. Thank you Mr. Zoomzike for being such an awesome entertainer and educator :D

A group of three goombas can be called a massacre, just like a group of three scuttlebugs can be considered a jamboree

12:00 well the canon balls do have a name, Which is "Big Steelies" so maybe they're already alive in the "dud" form

Personally, when using the canon below the island to get to the island, I never made that wonky high shot. I just aimed slightly above the tree.

Mario and Luigi are doing what they can. Yoshi and the Princess, are giving them a hand. Bob-Omb Battlefield.

Iirc Koopa the Quick does get mad at you for teleporting but only if he sees you do it. Could be some childhood false memories though

7:35 Little detail but I would have preferred if their called a murder because that’s also what a group of crows are called
