As Kosmic's pointed out, the 1-Up detail I mentioned at 3:50 isn't exactly right since you need 8 enemies in a row, not 6. It's possible (but difficult) in 1-1, and doable in 3-2, 5-1, and 8-1! Despite not granting the player a 1-Up here, they'll still learn how pivotal a Koopa Shell can be!
@legoboy71073 жыл бұрын
It's much more doable in Lost Levels actually, fun fact, they have SEVERAL intentional setups in Lost Levels specifically designed for you to get 1-ups from koopa shells. The first is in 1-1 (if you're clever with manipulating the sprite limit you can actually get TWO 1-ups from the shell in 1-1), there's one in 2-2 I believe though it's basically the same as SMB1 3-2, there's also one in...I think it's 3-3, I just know it's in a snowy athletic level of all places, there's a couple in two castles, one in 4-2 I believe as well, though it requires a Lakitu to drop 2 spinies first, etc.
@quentinlatreille57752 жыл бұрын
Its doable in the New Game + at the very least with the two goombas preceeding the koopa being buzzee beatles xD

Sprite limitations prevent all eight enemies from showing up at once in Worlds 3-2 and 5-1, so you need to go slow and let the Koopa shell you kicked reach the right edge of the screen, then run faster.

There were several other incorrect statements in your video. You also stated that you need to run with B to clear 2 tile jumps but you can actually clear more like 5 or 6 tiles in one jump without running. The only obstacles which cannot be cleared with a walking jump don't appear until world 8. For 8-1 you stated that Koopa shells can be kicked across one-tile gaps, but again, anybody who has played the game to that point knows this is not the case and that the shells will bounce off the succeeding blocks and fall down. There are many other errors and to top it off you credited the wrong person for the level designs. These were done by a man whom you likely have never heard of named Tezuka, not Miyamoto. Clearly you have little understanding of or care for the game but you don't let that interfere with you trying to pretend to have deep knowledge of it. Picking apart all the errors in this video would be a time consuming task I am not willing to dedicate myself to.

3:50 a 1-up takes 8 enemies, not 6! And even with 8 in a row it's pretty tough in this game to get a 1-up because of the sprite limit of 5. It's doable in several places though: twice in 3-2, twice in 5-1, and once in 8-1. It is also possible in 1-1 actually, but that requires some serious shenanigans to get 2 extra goombas to the right side of the koopa!

I know I already made a comment, but I felt I needed to type this out as well. In 5-2 and 6-2, you'll notice similarities, but the biggest two is a sub water area, and a vine area. Taking the water skips the vine, and vise versa. I believe this is a teaching moment, similar to 8-4's gimmick of skipping all the pipes for the last one. It teaches you to not always take the same secret path, as the main path may reward you with treasure, as with the two vines. I believe the designers put both levels the same way because they want to let you know this specific secret, to prepare for 6-2 and 8-4.
@darkychao3 жыл бұрын
the level transition from 1-1 to 1-2 and the end of 1-2 teaches you that you can enter enter pipes, if the player hadn't thought to try entering any of the pipes the first time through 1-1 the game teaches you that pressing right on a sideways pipe will let you enter it, and at the end of 1-2 you exit a pipe facing upwards, which may make a player think to try entering a pipe the same way. this ending can also teach the player that Piranha Plants will only come out of pipes when they're not being stood on.

My only question is why does bowser (and all the fake bowsers) keep standing on the bridges where they will be dropped into a fiery pit the moment the axe is touched...probably wasn't the brightest of Bowser's ideas...
@bsharpmajorscale3 жыл бұрын
IRL reason is convention. In-game reason? The bridge collapse could have been planned as a last-ditch trap for Mario, but their Bowser costumes make them too slow to reach it in time. Bowser doesn't know that he's too slow because the intel never reaches him, and he arrogantly assumes he can conk Mario on the head and drop him in the lava.
@megarotom15903 жыл бұрын
@@bsharpmajorscale that still makes bowser sound like an idiot and aside from a fire flower Mario has no other way to activate it. In addition, were that the plan he could easily just activate it once Mario got on the bridge (there are some people who are good enough they could probably make it to the axe from the the bridge before bowser but it would be extremely tricky). I can't remember who said this, or if that is the correct phrase at all, but I remember someone saying "The first 30 seconds of a game is important. If a game can't teach you its core mechanics in 30 seconds, why should you play it?" While this may no longer apply to games of this day and age is it imo still a valuable rule to have. If you can learn the mechanics fast, then you can play and enjoy the game much faster. Things like tutorials and text boxes only slow things down and prevent a player from enjoying the game as it is, which is why newer games these days suck so much. Also, the levels have a theme of becoming more and more destroyed, since you essentially leave the mushroom kingdom and enter the Koopa kingdom, where bowser rules. This is shown by the later white levels, which iirc should represent ash.

If you have access to the texture files, it may actually be easier to count the blades of grass. Effects like hair and grass are typically generated via a texture on the surface, so with the proper files and some programming experience, you can get a pretty accurate count for the grass across Hyrule pretty quickly.
@megarotom15903 жыл бұрын
@@thetechconspiracy2 wow that's actually pretty cool, but that makes sense. Though I wonder if it's place X blades of grass using this algorithm or if it's place as many blades of grass so long as the algorithm still holds. If it's just a specific number for each surface or whatever, you could probably look through the files and get an exact count or really close but if it just goes till it fills, it would probably be impossible to know exactly. Although if you were able to run the creation tool and be able to examine it, you could probably see how many objects there are in total subtract the ones that aren't grass (remove as many other objects as possible before hand) and then you have the exact number. That's my guess anyways...

I always thought it was interesting how the broken Stairy at the end of 8-3 looks intimidating because of all the missing blocks, but is almost functionally identical to the one you already passed at the end of 8-1 - platforms one block wide separated by gaps one block wide with a platform two blocks wide at the end. (The gap does extend slightly beyond the two-block platform in 8-3, but you're only going to fall in it if you stop and creep off the edge or land in front of the flagpole and go left, and who does that?)

If you think about it, Stairy is the real Bro in Super Mario Bros. Trying to help you gain that 1-up reaching top of that flagpole. However, Bowser in this game has shown his true evil form yet, to scare even fight you and hide in his evil lair with lots of loopholes. Seeing Stairy progressively destroy at the end of the game is heart-wrenching, just so Bowser makes it look like to make you hate Stairy thanks to pitfalls, but really, Stairy just wants to cheer you on reaching that flagpole. And the end of 8-3...You see a big pitfall you can't even jump all the way through, but you see Stairy, despite at its highest devastation, still encouraging you to reach that final flagpole and thus, reach the final level and defeat Bowser once in for all.

One thing I might have done regarding the fire bars would be to have an arrow showing which direction they’re turning.

To think that this man inspired countless developers on how to make video games. This game will be talked about for 100s of years to come. It will be in history books along with Shakespeare.

Additional comment after 5 months i personally love videos like this, analyzing every aspect of a game in a massive movie-like special, it's such a shame they're so difficult to find, after all, this channel is the only one i know who really posts this kind of content in a decent quantity.

This ending was so intense and emotional. That was really something! What an amazing video, I learned a megalot about SMB. As much as I'm ashamed to admit it, I had never played most of these levels past World 2 lol! This thorough analysis really deserve more credit and recognition. If KZbin one day decides to remove videos to make room on their servers, they ought to keep this one. And the Identifying Luck ones, of course.

This is one rare level where in a mario game where all power ups are in a single level and not just a level but the first one in the whole game.

I remember seeing a commercial a couple years back for a kids' breakfast cereal where the people eating it in the commercial are adults taking an evening to revisit the stuff they loved as kids. They played Super Mario Bros. and cheered like they were awesome at the game... as they reached the first goomba in 1-1. It's got nothing to do with this video, but it was really stupid and I just had to talk about it.

I’d like to think the starting cutscene and the end of 1-2 was to teach the player that some pipes can lead to new places, in case they didn’t learn that yet from the first warp pipe back in 1-1
