Some people commenting seem to be closed minded and have tunnel vision when it comes to zoos. Yes, there are bad zoos out there. But guess what? There are also bad " sanctuaries" a place being called a " zoo" or " sanctuary" in and of itself is not an indication of the quality of the institution or lack thereof. There are zoos that provide excellent homes for animals and put in a lot of effort to conserve animals. And, there are so called sanctuaries that do not house animals correctly or care for them correctly. The association of zoos and aquariums actually allows anyone to download and read their accreditation standards from their website at no cost. I should note though, not every good zoo is AZA accredited. But it's a good place to start. So don't get tunnel vision, don't just go " zoo bad sanctuary good" actually look at the quality of individual institutions.

At around 15 minutes the talk on zoonotic diseases reminded me of the warning from directors of WAZA member zoos around 8 years ago of the potential for a zoonotic in nature, global pandemic sometime in the future. All of the environmental causes were, and still are, there! Better care of the environment benefits all and the field research done by zoos goes a long way to assist.

Great talk and a great advocate. I'm sure his Zoo must be one of the GREAT ones, however, the numbers Keith Lovett presents, "more visitors than NBA..." Well, then animals should be getting superstar benefits. Again, I am commenting on all the other less competitive zoos, than the ones described by the speaker. Animals superstars, Great talk, but how do we bring more 'wild' to Eearth back then?

In my view the main purpose of zoos is to put animals on display because people are interested in looking at them and willing to pay to do so. If zoos want to change their mission to one of just providing sanctuary to animals at risk of extinction, then close down all urban zoos that have inadequate space and facilities to give animals a proper home and open wildlife sanctuaries in their native habitats with larger facilities and do not permit people to come gawk at them, yell at them, taunt them and take pictures in front of them.

This is amazing! I have always loved zoos, and never understood why people hated them. Keith Lovett does a wonderful job at explaining why zoos are good.

Harrison Turner zoos should be sanctuaries. Every captive animal deserves the best care possible ad to NOT be held captive. Screw zoos.

Yes. You are right on your first two minutes. Zoos are prison for animals. Yes, not all prisons are the same, some are better than others, it seems this guy works for one of the ‘good’ ones.

Nicolas Ibarguen Thank you. Yes. Of course there are some better than others but ultimately the existence of them is inherently wrong, if they want to rehabilitate animals then please and if they provide sanctuary for endangered species then that’s good, other than that no animals belong in a prison for humans to stare at whilst they go insane walking in circles their entire life in a cage.

Right. This guy sells better prisons for his own wealth

Hi! So are you saying all those species of animals should go extinct instead of be saved by zoos through species survival plans?
@TanJulia Жыл бұрын
@@whatwetalkinbout3040 when did they say that?
@sandrineb8934 Жыл бұрын
@@whatwetalkinbout3040 The question is who first was responsible of extinction of animals? During colonisation we started to collect animals from their lands and brings them to put them in cages. Zoos are linked to colonisation and slavery. Without humans, animals species would not be extinct. We are the cause...don't pretend we are the solution now through zoos please

Movies (illusions/stories) and restaurants (entertainment/food) may have qualitative differences, but the purpose is the same. Same with zoos. They are entertainment/learning for humans at the expense of animals’ freedom. You can have a prison that is like a 5-star hotel or a dump. But they are still prisons. I would rather not be born and my whole species extinct than be born into captivity. This speech is all coming from the point of view of a human being who runs a zoo and wants to benefit/entertain his own species without regard for animals’ freedom. The animals would naturally gravitate toward their natural habitat.

Great so the reason we should keep animals in zoos is because WE can learn about them and be inspired to look after the environment. How selfish. Using their lives to make us care about nature. Lets just set them free and start caring about nature regardless.

expet zoos have saved many animals from extinction. a lot more than peta. species survival programs have saved many animals like the california condor and euiropien bison
