*Question of the Episode: What makes your local aquarium worth visiting?* - Newport Aquarium is a leader in Shark Ray conservation, puts a good amount of focus on amphibians, has a shark touch tank, has more underwater tunnels I've ever seen in one place, along with several glass floors that overhangs carnivores, and outside of a couple galleries there's nothing typical or repetitive about it. *Aquarium Map to follow along:* www.montereybayaquarium.org/globalassets/mba/pdf/maps/aquarium-visitor-map.pdf *Website:* www.montereybayaquarium.org/ *Facts, Firsts, & Aquarium Records (they have a lot!):* www.montereybayaquarium.org/newsroom/media-kits/facts-and-figures *LIVE CAMS (including exhibits presented in the video):* www.montereybayaquarium.org/animals/live-cams *Here's what all you can see in the Monterey Bay:* www.montereybayaquarium.org/visit/exhibits/life-on-the-bay *Sea Otter Conservation & Research:* www.montereybayaquarium.org/stories/sea-otter-rescue-and-research *Monterey Bay Aquarium in Star Trek:* kzbin.info/www/bejne/fWqun2uKjNZ6hdk *Monterey Bay Aquarium's KZbin Channel (they have the best social media team out of any US zoological institution:* kzbin.info/door/nM5iMGiKsZg-iOlIO2ZkdQ

This is my local aquarium :) Also during certain times of the year, the open sea habitat will have ocean sunfish. Idk when you visited but I unfortunately didn’t see any on my last visit here (about 1 month ago) The open sea habitat also traditionally had barracuda, and sandbar sharks. They even used to have blue, white, and oceanic white tip sharks at one point but they aren’t around anymore
@Yoongis_Chapstick5 ай бұрын
The huge sunfish that was in the open ocean tank, I learned was returned to the ocean. I think, (don't quote me lol) it's was originally accidentally caught injured, or something like that. Therefore was why they had the Sunfish and rereleased it once it was fully mature and able to breed and help the species strive. (I'd say I'm about 90% sure that's more or less what the aquarium worker told me) She told us the story after she overheard me telling my daughter how they're used to be this super huge sunfish in the tank for years. 🦀🐙🐟🦈🐧🦦🐠🦞🦭 Pretty cool, huh? I think so. 😊👍 #MONTEREYBAYAQUARIUM

My local aquarium is the Tennessee Aquarium. I can name several things that make it worth a trip such as the beautiful location in downtown Chattanooga right on the Tennessee river and the water features that surround the aquarium. The fact that there are two buildings, one for the ocean and one for fresh water. The theming is very immersive, especially in the main ocean exhibit where it looks like you are in an underwater cave. But I think the coolest thing is the animal interactions (not even including the upcharge activities.) You can touch thr butterflies, pet sting rays, skates, fish, horseshoe crabs and even pet sturgeons. Plus, if you're a big fan of zoos and aquariums you can make it part of a trip because within two and a half hours you've got the Chattanooga Zoo, Nashville Zoo, Zoo Knoxville, Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokys, Zoo Atlanta and the always impressive Georgia Aquarium.

Mine is the Dallas World Aquarium. There are definitely a few reasons worth going but this depends on what kind of visitor you are. For zoo nerds the aquarium has a good number of extremely rare species of bird. For people that just like to go to zoos and aquariums then I'd say the best reason to go is the atmosphere is fantastic. Sure the place has some less than stellar enclosures, but a majority of it is very natural, lush and quality

The Living Planet Aquarium in Salt Lake City is honestly more than an aquarium. They have some absolutely *stunning* exhibits of local fish species that I love to visit, and a walk-through tropical area similar to a smaller version of the Omaha's Zoo's Lied Jungle. There's actually a butterfly exhibit you can walk through too, which is magical when they land on you. In addition to fish, they also house invertebrates, amphibians, and reptiles, as well as penguins, and even a few smaller mammals (my favorite is their clouded leopard, who is actually not very shy about coming out). And we also have the Hogle Zoo, which I haven't been to since the 90's but has seen a huge number of renovations and is one of the best zoos you can see on a day trip, since it's on the smaller side for a zoo.

My "local" aquarium would be the Oregon Coast Aquarium. It's an excellent facility that is noteworthy for being the place that Keiko (the Orca from Free Willy) was sent in order to improve his quality of life. After he left they converted his tank into a walk-through facility called "Passages of the Deep." The Aquarium is also near by the Newport Bayfront, which is a touristy area, as well as the Rogue Brewery and OSU's Hatfield Marine Science Center.

I have two local aquariums. One is the Steinhart Aquarium within the California Academy of Sciences; it has an impressive coral reef exhibit with actual coral that you can see from above and below and a flooded Amazonian river that seamlessly connects the aquarium with the rainforest dome. The other is the Aquarium of the Bay which has a very heavy focus on native SF Bay aquatic life and lots of aquarium tunnels. Also, while not technically an aquarium, Aquatic Collection has an incredibly diverse range of livestock and is the go-to place if you are looking for unusual marine fish for your fish tank.

What makes my local aquarium worth visiting? The facility's remarkable emphasis on conservation, research, and rehabilitation, which makes it go far beyond being just an amazing place with a dazzlingly variety of marine life, something which it admittedly also is. I think any great aquarium, any great zoological facility really, should strive to go beyond and above the standard "facility where people can view wild creatures", and my local aquarium, which I'm happy to report is the Monterey Bay Aquarium, does just that.
