Zora Neale Hurston was an anthropologist. She ensured that the lives and experiences she conveyed, in much of her writings, were as authentic to those who shared them with her, or as she observed them, as they could possibly be. Sis, needs to stand down. She is “a slave ship in shoes” personified.

@@dorcasmalahlela2805 think about it. What did slave ships do? They transported African people from a place of freedom to places where they were in bondage and servitude to others at their own detriment. What is she doing? With her backward thinking she is promoting mental bondage. Transporting those to whom she speaks to a place of mental captivity. Those who take her word to heart will be left enslaved to the thought, the notion, the very idea that speaking "standard English" makes you superior to those who don't.

I never had trouble understanding Zora Neale Hurston's words when I read them because the vernacular was very similar to my very southern grandpa. That was unforgivable what that woman said.....does she not know that in every country their are different dialects with different gramma and totally different words? That's the beauty and the rich tapestry of regions and peoples. Where I come from, dialects and different words can be totally different in areas just 5 miles away! It's good to be able to speak in a way that most people can understand, but NO ONE should ever feel ashamed/belittled for knowing and speaking the dialect of where they are from/what they grew up with in the home. I'll be damned if I'll ever cease speaking my dialect with others that I know understand. It feels safe, homely and gives a sense of identity and roots. Shame on her

Imagine being intentionally obtuse about intentional use of a particular vernacular and how difficult it is to maintain that consistently throughout a novel
@deldarel
@deldarel Жыл бұрын
But I don't think it's intentional, I think she just never made that link and is gonna feel real bad when that link is made. It's the colonial mindset of "there's a way the language aught to be." This invites supremacist thinking. If you're raised with this, you just don't realise it, even if you see this in different structures. I was raised being taught by my parents that the dialect we moved into was broken Dutch. Guess who didn't have many friends as a kid? I only learned around age 22 how messed up that was. Even the old term for standard Dutch, which translates to 'common civilised Dutch' should be a massive red flag, yet it never raised any alarm bells because I was raised with it. Maybe I'm being naïve, but I don't see a reason to assign malice where ignorance fits, especially if I see someone in a space I used to be.
