Zora Neale Hurston did die broke and penniless in a unmarked grave. Yet her legacy is well and alive. Great job

Actually her grave is a landmark in Fort Pierce Florida and her home is landmarked as well. I know because I live in Fort Pierce

We all die broke. It's hard to build wealth through two world wars, great depression and 1940s inflation. Don't get me started on the ridiculous tax code of the day.

Thank you brother for the commentary. I've read different viewpoints on their relationship. we'll probably never know the details, but both were great writers and that can't be denied.

@John: Yeah. They both wrote about how they viewed it. Two sides to every story. It really did split them up for good, but when Zora was accused of sexual assault of a minor, Hughes was willing to testify on her behalf for her character. So even thought they didn't get along after the fued, Hughes wasn't going to let her go down like that. Thanks for the comment.

Thank you! Great insights. I have started reading “Zora and Langston,” your commentary gives me a deeper insight into their lives...

Zora kind of looks like she was funny but a little on the messy side. I wonder if they had a romantic relationship? Just seems like there was a lot emotion behind her letter.

the age difference has me processing everything about her different. A 27 year old amongst 17, 18 and 19 years old? As peers?

I think Zora is on point. Langston was thinking with his wrong head, wanting to share playwright credit with the beautiful typist. You're calling Zora the c word is a disgrace. May as well call WEB Dubois the c word.
@jasonito234 жыл бұрын
The way Zora was pandering to the white lady and signing off like she did was a disgrace. Have you bothered to read this book? The book of her letters. Zora is not the person who everyone thinks she is. At time she would write elegant and powerful things but on too many occasions she sold out over and over again.

@@jasonito23 The few citations you provided are suspect. That's like saying WEB Dubois was a c**n for visiting Nazi Germany and even providing some praise.

And thank you for keeping your disagreement respectful. I had to get rid of that other guy on here with the name-calling. This channel ain't for all that.

I don't really hold WEB DuBois in high standing. It's just that he was another voice for black folks back then and he did provide opportunities for many up and coming black intellectuals back then. I read his book, "Souls of Black Folk" and was not impressed. I actually can't even remember much what it was about. You may notice that had not done any pages focused on his life and works. I did do a few pages on some of his articles I found interesting.

Zora is a Libertarian so I def. respect her.

Very good, I think I agree with you. She was way too insulting to maintain her status and at that time, way too smart mouth for a female to present in any space public or private.

New sub. I really enjoyed your analysis of Zora N. Hurston because I always thought she had questionable sellout behavior
@jasonito236 жыл бұрын
In her book of Letters she does have some of that behavior. She went back and forth, but times were different back then and it seemed that she went back and forth and mostly white people had the resources she needed. Still sometimes she went overboard. At the same time, Zora had some of the most militant black stances too. She died in poverty, so in the end it seemed that no one stood with her. Thank you for subscribing. I like to get comments like yours.

@@jasonito23 agreed. I was initially drawn to her writings due to her progressive ideas, however she definitely went overboard at times. We all do, I guess.
