It'd be against the Captain's orders. 2. Deep down Zoro does have enough respect and experience with Sanji to know that he would never suddenly harm Luffy like this if there wasn't some kind of heavy internal conflict burdening his mind, and/or something beyond his control making him do it. It's happened before at Arlong Park and Water 7 for similar reasons. He's not okay with Sanji's actions, but he reads/understands the situation and stands with his captain. Retaliation would prove nothing except for Zoro's already established loyalty, make things worse, *and* make Luffy seem like an irresponsible leader. Oda has always been teaching us these lessons lol

I think their dynamic can be boiled down to 'each one sees one of their self perceived flaws as something the other perceives as one of their strengths' Zoro is stoic and sees his compassion as something can be used against him. Sanji thinks his compassion makes him strong, but his inability to put it aside can make his struggles harder at times. They are a reflection of each other, and while they respect each other deeply, it grates at them.

I'm so glad you brought up that moment in Thriller Bark where Zoro looked really shocked seeing Sanji hurt himself after kicking Kuma. I've been in the OP community for years but I don't think I've seen anyone, on Reddit, KZbin, etc bring up that moment when talking about Zoro and Sanji's relationship. To me that is one of the clearest sign on just how much Zoro acknowledges Sanji as an equal (since to the fandom, they always see Zoro > Sanji). The horror in Zoro's face just screams "shit, we're fucked" since they're fighting an opponent who's too tough for Sanji's legs. Zoro has always shown worry and concern when the other crewmates get in danger, but he never showed that shock/panic look he gave to Sanji. It basically shows the audience that Zoro knows they're in deep shit if the opponent is too strong even for Sanji.

Something I think people forget about Zoro and Sanji is that woman have played a very important role in their life. With Zoro having some what rivalry with an older sister type, and seeing how she was disrespected for her gender. Sanji, meanwhile, has only had woman show extreme kindness to him in his early life, thus making Sanji feel safer around woman. Both respect and love woman immensely, but they legitimately have different ways of showing and dealing with it. I think that part really helps with why these two fight and butt heads as much as they do. They basically share similar ideas, but go about it in a completely different way, so much so that they are always trying to better the other into their way of thinking. Part of it is certainly the boyish friendness, and by all means I don't see the two hating each other. It's more like a constant fight of ideas, and poking the bear to see who will win next, like a scoring system.

I think it’s also telling that when the crew is split up Zoro goes one way and sanji goes the other. It shows that Zoro knows that if sanji is with them they’ll be safe. He didn’t come rescue sanji, I think, because he knew 1) that they would get him back, and 2) once he was back he would be strong enough to help get them out of an emperors territory. This is big mom we’re talking about, but he trusted sanji enough that he knew that he could prioritize keeping the other group of straw hats safe

King and Queen absolutely represent zoro and sanji, king has a line where he kinda mocks zoro for having proper sword techniques showing king maybe having a lack of discipline in contrast to zoro. Queen on the other hand is literally what sanji was worried about becoming, an emotionless robot+dinosaur 🦕. Queen literally poisons people on purpose and has a direct connection to sanjis emotionless father with MADS science group. In Wano, Sanji put a transporter snail for Zoro in case he would get in trouble like in Sabaody with Kuma; and when Sanji told Zoro to kill him in case he would go insane, it was a clear sign that he lays on Zoro alot. No one else in the Strawhat crew would be able to kill him off without feeling like shit. But Sanji asked Zoro to, because he knew he would be able to. And at the end of the battle, when they all recovered, Zoro said "I came back from Hell to kill you." because he wanted to make sure Sanji was in a sane state again. If this doesn't scream friendship, i don't know what does.

I really love that moment in Wano when Sanji had to put Zoro in Bandages. It felt rushed in the Manga, but the Anime made it a short calm and wholesome moment. For me they are brothers in arms, Sanji the brother for Zoro he never had and Zoro the brother for Sanji he actually needed. It's also said in Japan their fans are not so hateful on each other. I do love Sanji more than Zoro, but I respect him nevertheless. He's way more of an idol character, with a strong will and ambition, while Sanji has his flaws, but these actually draw me to him way more. That doesn't mean I think Zoro has no character, it's just different. Also big YAY for someone finally pointing out the greatness of their Davy Back fight scene. Downplayed or even worse ignored so often. 😭

@@Emily12471 according to Oda, if they were a family, Robin would be mom and Franky would be dad. Zoro and Sanji are the eldest brothers. As an oldest sibling myself, I’ve always viewed them that way including pre-timeskip; they were just the big bros who had to do all the stuff Mom and Dad would normally do because Mom and Dad were gone. And now Mom and Dad are back home, but that hasn’t changed their responsibilities all that much, which is still realistic in a large family with older/adult children or parents who can’t/won’t do certain things. It’s not at all unrealistic based off my own personal experience.

Before the Straw Hats, Zoro's closest relationship was with Kuina and it was a lot of insults, yelling and fighting. My favorite moment between them is in Enies Lobby when Jabra is about to kill Usopp and Nami while Zoro is kept busy dealing with Kaku and Zoro is freaking out until Sanji arrives. It’s then that he finally smiles and goes on the offensive with Kaku. It doesn’t matter that Jabra is portrayed at this point to be equal to Kaku (they were fighting each other Zoro v Sanji style) Zoro is confident that Sanji can beat him even when he isn’t sure he can beat Kaku. After they have dealt with their respective opponents they lock eyes and give each other a subtle nod. This moment really emphasizes the respect they have for each other as they were confident in each others ability to win. It’s really subtle but it’s a nice moment.

i was practically waiting for this after the masterpiece that was your sanji video. zoro and sanji have singlehandedly rewired my brain to associate yellow and green with these two dumbasses. i feel like fighting is just their way to get along together - i am convinced that zoro knows how to handle each strawhat, being what they need (for example: a bigger brother figure for chopper, a strong pillar that keeps luffy grounded, an anchor for the crew that offers so much stability) and it is no different with sanji. like you said, the way sanji fights with zoro is the same how he does with zeff and that is their respective way of showing how much they care for each other. like come on. zoro is much more in tune with everyone and he is far more emotionally intelligent than fandom/people believe him to be and his relationship with sanji is the most obvious proof for that

I had never thought of them representing the "hard" and "soft" parts of Luffy... and that makes a lot of sense! I always thought of them as best friends. they clearly trust each other. Sanji talked about this a lot of times, and Zoro demonstrated it a lot of times, like in Wano when he sleeps on Sanji's shoulders. they fight, in my mind until this video, for some reasons: 1) pride. Zoro knows that, besides Luffy, Sanji is the only one that could stand his ground against him in a fight. Sanji knows that Zoro is stronger than him (more about that later). 2) The first time I read the manga I had this impression that I stand until today: Zoro acts with Sanji the way people in Baratie act with him. Zoro made Sanji feel in home. It was obviously harder for Sanji to leave because since he was a kid he was always with the same people, and Zoro was always traveling alone. so to Zoro joining the crew was easy, he didn't leave anything behind. Sanji does. So Zoro made Sanji feels at home by acting like his old partner. That's what a real friend does. the fight is a kind way Zoro finds to make Sanji feel at home. 3) It's a way to communicate that they are equal. they don't obey each other because there's no hierarchy between them. Luffy is their captain, but between them, they are equal. And yes, obviously Zoro is stronger, that's painfully obvious. Zoro always fights the 2º stronger and Sanji the 3º stronger. in Wano Zoro was with Luffy fighting Kaidou and Big Mom, and Sanji fights King and Queen at once for a little time. but what Sanji doesn't have in physical power in a battle, he has in intelligence, like in Enies Lobby when he opens the gate, or going to Enies Lobby when he follows Robin or speaking with Crocodile in Alabasta. Zoro has a lot of emotional intelligence, and Sanji is very smart to find not obvious solutions. But the most important thing is that they trust each other. As the video said, they made clear they think that everyone is safe with each other. and they complement Luffy in different ways. Zoro by being this rock, solid in fights and in emotional situations, and Sanji is this liquid, adapting and finding exits that were not obvious.

the whole kuma thing at thriller bark was such an amazing moment for both of them. it was not only nerve-wrecking, but also one of the biggest bonding moments between them. it really showed how much they cared, not only for all the crew, but for the other one respectively. zoro getting sanji out of the way and sacrificing himself for everyone, and sanji running towards him when he just woke up out of worry for zoro. also them agreeing on the serious moments also shows how they understand each other even if they're fighting 24/7 out of spite tbh i just love this kinda dynamics between two characters, which is why i love zoro and sanji together sm

I introduced my one friend to One Piece a while back and he marathoned the entire series in about 2 months a couple years back. Just to clear up the part where the Davy back fight has little to no “world building” there’s actually more going on. The Davy back fight goes back to before roger and whitebeard and it’s rooted in a even older character and crew, Rocks. We can assume that Rocks used the Davy back fight to amass a powerful crew with heavy hitters like Lin Lin, Kaido and Newgate. So having the Davy back early on just for it to come back in a big way is just perfect oda writing and world building.

Two things: One, after learning more about Sanji's background and his family, I started to view Zoro as the brother he never had. Zoro also has the same "jocky" demeanor as his brothers and green hair. But obviously Zoro is completely different and Sanji actually has respect for Zoro from the very beginning. Two, during Wano, we see Luffy, Kid, and Law bickering with each other on the roof, at which point Zoro says to Killer, "They must be great friends".
