Zoro's promise ending with him calling Luffy "King of the Pirates" will never NOT give me chills. Even after witnessing the monstrous heights of the One Piece world, in Zoro's mind, Luffy is ALREADY the King. He's just on his way to get the crown.

This is the episode that made me know OP will be great. This anime came out in the 90s and NO ONE has done anything close to this that I can think of. Every other series when faced with a big bad the MC always finds a way to beat the strongest person in the world. OP is really good at showing the strawhats do take loses and grow from them.

Mihawk's line: "Frog in the well, know how big the world is." was his poetic way of telling Zoro that he still has much to learn. Zoro is like a little frog who lives in a small well that thinks he's already seen and experienced everything, but he's oblivious to the fact that a whole world exists outside his well. Like that little frog, Zoro thinks he has already reached the pinnacle of swordsmanship and power, and Mihawk taught him a hard lesson.

So in terms of arcs, it’s pretty universal that everyone that’s introducing someone to OP tells them that get to Baratie and you’ll be hooked. By Arlong Park (next arc) you REALLY start to get what all the hype about OP is about and all of a sudden 1000 episodes of this don’t seem to bad. Arlong Park is really where Oda starts to get in his groove and it only gets better and better from there.

Up until this point, our protagonists haven't really struggled too much in their journey. There have been some tough opponents, but even then, it was simply a matter of fighting harder or changing tactics, and our protagonists win. The show lets you think that while this might be an occasionally challenging journey, it won't be that hard. Then Dracule Mihawk shows up, and we, and the protagonists, suddenly learn just how VAST the gulf in power is between our protagonists and the people at the top. It wasn't just that Zoro lost; it's that he literally had no chance of winning. Mihawk is a glimpse of what truly waits for the Straw Hat pirates, and it's equal parts hype and terrifying. Out of the LONG list of things you need to accomplish to be the PK, Shanks is the final adversary in that line of foes who guards the PK throne.
