Just wanted to churn out a quick video and cover this weird, amazing, incomplete handheld. *Working on a full review, but please, if you have any questions or want something tested, sound off in the comments and I’ll get to work!* Things I’m tinkering with: * Handhed companion * x86 Tuning Utility * Comparisons with Z1 Extreme * Fan curves (already noticed an improvement on lower wattages, much more consistent) * Whether there’s a way to get Bazzite on this Things I didn’t mention: * The ZOTAC Zone seems to be only available in certain parts of Europe at the time being. I ordered this one from Germany, and it’ll supposedly start shipping in the US in a couple of weeks (based on a few comments from a ZOTAC representative on Reddit). * The ONE Launcher was only _actually_ released a about a month ago. Whoever bought the Zone before that - and there _have_ been a few people in Europe cause this thing was actually in stock at a few places even in September - faced numerous different issues. Black screens when booting up games, HDR issues, broken Windows installations, and whatever else.

It's a reminder of just how incredible the Steam Deck is from a build quality and software standpoint.

And it's mindblowing how little it costs, how much value it provides for the asking price. Sure, Valve gets it back through software and game sales, but it's still a win for us consumers.

Thank you Amir! 🙌 It's coming mid-January, no one's gonna be watching a Zotac Zone review around New Year's Eve, and then a few days later CES is happening, so no one's gonna be watching it then too. 😅 So it's a strategic choice. But lots of new videos are in the works!
@Sumire9287Ай бұрын
Great first impression. The problem I see this device having is that it came too late, not as much as the Acer one, but still too late. People are already talking about the Z2 extreme and the new MSI claws. Even Oled isn’t enough now that the Onexfly F1 pro already launched and the Ayaneo 3 will be coming soon, both with the newer chips. If it at least offered a very polished experience I could see a place, just as the Ally X has succeeded while only being a refresh that launched the same week as the HX370 laptops
@CGD.StudioАй бұрын
Thank you Sumire! 🙌I agree completely, I think their initial plan was to start selling this a lot sooner. What happened and what caused the delays, I have no clue. That being said, I think it's still a pretty interesting option (despite the fact that it feels unfinished in more ways than one). I'd much rather buy from ZOTAC or ASUS or whoever than from Onexplayer or Ayaneo. I've read people's experiences when it comes to RMAs and warranties, and they're pretty darn bad overall. If something goes wrong, you're on your own, essentially, or you ship it back to them to China and wait 4 months for them to get back to you. And this AMOLED display, man... It's something else, really. It sucks you in, and the brightness is retina burning (and it feels so good). So if someone's okay with doing the heavy lifting for ZOTAC and if this thing gets a price cut (which it absolutely should), it might be a worthwhile option. Also, Bazzite and SteamOS, at some point, might elevate the whole experience which would seriously give it a boost software-wise. I'm also afraid to even _think_ about how much more expensive the Z2 Extreme handhelds are gonna be. Supposedly the HX370 costs twice as much as the 8840U, which means that the Z2E is also gonna command a premium. I think ASUS and Lenovo are gonna target $999 at the lowest, and at that price point, I just don't see the point, to be honest. If it has all the bells and whistles, sure, but as things stand, I'm not all that optimistic. I'll try to get my hands on the Claw 8 in January, pretty hyped about that one! Thank you for taking the time to comment!
@Sumire9287Ай бұрын
@ thanks for your response! I completely agree that importing a device from China is a hassle, but at least OneNetbook doesn’t seem to be as bad as Ayaneo in that regard. That said, yes, the Z2 extreme will be indeed much more expensive than the current devices as seen with the Onexfly F1 pro. I’m still waiting on what these new devices bring to the table and decide wether or not I want to upgrade. I’m not so happy with my base Ally mainly due to ergonomics and to a lesser extent battery life, but at the same time I love the freedom it provides and I’m quite happy with performance already. Both of these are fixed with the Ally X, but I know that if I went with it I would’ve likely felt quite bad with the newer devices around the corner.
@CGD.StudioАй бұрын
Oh if you already have an Ally I'd definitely wait. I just borrowed it from a friend after, like, 6 months of not having one myself, and I'm honestly blown away by just how much it grew. I've experienced no bugs, no quirks, even sleep/resume works! I don't think you'd get anything worthwhile by upgrading right now, other than, of course, the better battery life (and I guess more RAM). What a killer device, the OG Ally, for a crazy good price! As for ergonomics, there's a bunch of ergonomic cases and "handles" you can buy for really cheap, and they really elevate the whole experience. I only used the JSAUX Modcase myself, and it made things a _lot_ better. So that's at least an easy fix!
@badmoose01Ай бұрын
Since Zotac is a relatively big computer oem hopefully they can make distribution deals with big box stores to make the product more accessible. I think Asus and Lenovo could use some healthy competition. Smaller chinese handheld makers like One x and Aya just don't have that kind of reach and hopefully products like this can make pc handhelds more mainstream.
@CGD.StudioАй бұрын
@badmoose01 and that would, hopefully, result in lower prices as well, cause these things are getting pricey. 😅

8” screen, 32gb of RAM and oculink support and this would have been my next purchase! We’re so close to perfection, I’d hold your cash. If you’re dying to buy a handheld get the SD Oled. Price, ergonomics, oled, touch pads, Linux, direct support from steam and valve. Look into undervolting and over clocking. Increase TDP to 20w and get cooling fan. Best bang for buck and excellent current gen performance. Did I mention oled.
@CGD.Studio20 күн бұрын
Sadly, I don't think we're gonna get Oculink on any mainstream option. :/ Too "proprietary" for their liking. But if you need 8" and 32GB of RAM, that new MSI Claw 8 would probably deliver, despite having an IPS panel as opposed to an OLED one. But a machine like that could very well serve as a mini PC. Stellar single-core performance, ample RAM, and two TB4 ports. Hard to complain.
@captaintruth20 күн бұрын
@ thanks for the feedback, just looked into the new MSI claw and WOW! What a spec sheet! Little bit of a wait yet in the UK though, be interesting to see if the legion go 2 is announced before release here. It’s a very exciting time in handhelds! My first was a game boy colour which was ace but it thought GBA was incredible, then DS I couldn’t believe I was seeing 3D in my hands, PSP took it to another level. The Vita was such a brilliant machine but never saw it’s full potential from lack of game support. Now we’re at this point now and honestly it is staggering. The current gen have all pushed the envelope but all seem to miss something. Whether it’s the OLED, poor ergonomics, poor connectivity for egpu support, small battery, small screen. It’s like we need a Frankenstein machine to get the best. Legion go 2 is my top predicted pick for 2025, if they offer OLED with smoother FPS and hopefully VRR then it’s going to be an incredible machine. MSI 8 AI+ looks amazing and is also on my potential hit list so thanks for that! I’m interested in EGPU support so big RAM is crucial. The CPU looks really impressive and the GPU great for mobile. Shame no OLED but I intend to buy viture pro xrs and also regularly dock.

I had an ayaneo 2 as my first PC handheld and it would get hot. Software not too great either. Controls and display were amazing. Horrendous battery life (because fans always run due to poor thermals). I bought the ally x few months ago, one of the best purchases I have ever made. Excellent software support and thermals. Controls are not as good but I’ve realize one of the most important things when buying a handheld is the software support. Also the VRR and battery life are amazing and essential for a handheld.

I have one and i love it it’s better then my onexplayer ally z1 extreme and steam deck the feel is the best on the market also this is the only handheld that you can play first person shooters with no dead zone delay feels like your actually playing on your pc or console with a genuine controller the stage 2 triggers are a bit mushy but I like them I wish it was more clicky tho the touch pads work great for me I haven’t had any problems with it other then trying to drag a folder or file to another folder they need to make the touch pads customizable but it don’t bother me the only problem I experienced since I had this was the custom controller profiles didn’t work for me

Performance-wise, it's the same shelf as the Rog Ally Z1 Extreme, right? Because I saw that the Ally X is more efficient in games. And how does the volume in +25W mode compare to the Ally? Because I saw that in almost every review there was a minus that the Zotac is very loud under load in automatic mode, in one review it measured 52 decibels, it is known that you can adjust the fan curve but still many people complained about the noise. I was thinking about the Zotac myself but I think I will decide on the Ally X. The same price and yet the Ally X, excluding the screen, is better in every category: performance, battery, work culture, software.

The tracking, I guess, is totally fine (not always though), but anything more precise is just a nightmare. And the click is just the worst, it barely works at all. Do your trackpads have these, like, two stages of actuation as well, or did I get a bad unit? 🤔
@seanbaxter3402Ай бұрын
@@Modsyyyyy I’m not sure as I don’t see many comparisons on this handheld yet but from my experience it runs about 25% better in performance from the z1 extreme (not sure about ally x) the main thing is it feel amazing if you play first person shooters I would go with the Zotac zone I play a lot of bo6 and it feels like I’m playing on my pc with my scuf impact no dead zone delay or anything but if you need that extra battery life ally x is the better option plus they do have more spec options unlike the zone with only 516gb of storage and 16gb of ram

Zotac is late to the game, everyone, me included, is waiting the next gen of apus. Also i have decided that i want an 8 inch oled panel, i am old and the one inch difference goes a long way for my eyes, so first one that comes out with this, steam deck 2 or rog ally 2, i am gonna buy it. Was looking forward for legion go 2, but seen your video and how they abandoned their product i decided i am done with Lenovo.
@CGD.StudioАй бұрын
Thank you, friend! 🙌 Too late indeed. But it might be a worthwhile option in a few months once the price goes down. An 8” OLED sounds like a dream. 😁 As for Lenovo, you never know, they might pick up the pace. ASUS has done a bunch of bad stuff themselves, but the ROG Ally is the best its ever been right now. They all know that these devices are the future, so it’s only a matter of time before they all step up. Otherwise they’ll just bleed out money.

great video, i hope they fix the stand issue, thats unacceptable lol. i would very likely just end up putting bazzite on it once it gets proper support so the software issues dont bother me a lot the screen is almost reason enough for me to get it honestly, its why i use my steam deck oled everyday and my ally is collecting dust for the price tho i will hold out, the battery is kinda small and i dont play enough games that need the 8840u power, i'll stick with my steam deck oled for now
@CGD.StudioАй бұрын
I'm not that optimistic about the stand thing, sadly. This is a retail unit. It's not a dealbreaker, but who knows, in a worst case scenario it could definitely cause some actual damage. If it were retailing for, like, $650 or something, it'd be a much easier thing to recommend. It's really hard to go back to an IPS panel, as you said. I appreciate more options for Handheld gaming PCs on the market and quality testing issues aside I hope - 4 x back buttons, 2 x trackpads and 4-8 x number keys become a standard at least for premium Handheld PCs. There're a couple PC genres that have yet to fully transition to full controller support - namely RTS and Dota like games So, with additional buttons 4 x back buttons = shift + ctrl, pedals/tab 2 x trackpads = desktop navigation, rts games (though wheel menus do just fine) 4 - 8 x number keys/nubs top of the controller = 1-8 number keys of a keyboard which allows for control groups, item/weapon selections etc... The Xbox/PlayStation controller layout has not really evolved for over 20 years and limits more sophisticated PC games from translating to controllers.
@CGD.StudioАй бұрын
Oof, that’s quite a lot to cram on a handheld. 😅 I guess only Valve would be crazy/willing to experiment to such a degree.
@AdmiralBisonАй бұрын
@@CGD.Studio It's completely doable and a larger controller with deep grips can be more ergonomical than small cramp controllers. If you look at the steam Deck controller layout all the thumb sticks, and trackpads is spaced out yet still reachable. ** can be argued the thumb sticks, dpad and face buttons all being aligned horizontally to one another is easier than the Xbox controller layout. Steam Deck already has 4 x back buttons. AyanNeo handheld shows it has 2 x nub buttons top of the controller - LC & RC. So all that is really needed in the case of the Steam deck controller is to add 4 ~ 8 more nub buttons.

Initially, I was really waiting for Zotac, but even though I live in the UK and could get it immediately, I refrained from buying it. In my opinion, Zotac Zone came out too late and offers too little considering how much it costs (in the UK you can buy Rog Ally ? If they offered as much memory as Rog Ally X, despite the old chip (after all, the Z2 will be released soon), it would be quite a purchase, right? We get the amount of RAM like Lenovo or Rog Z1 Extreme, which were released a long time ago, I ignore the size of the disk because, unlike RAM, it can be replaced. What caught my eye in all the reviews I've seen so far is the worse performance than Ally Ally refined at the premiere) because this can be refined over time, but the rest cannot. I don't know about elsewhere, but in the UK, as far as I know, Zotac sells poorly, which is hardly surprising considering the price and performance of the console, sorry, the OLED screen itself is a bit small because the rest are the Rog Ally Z1 Extreme and Lenovo Legion Go, which are a lot cheaper, Ally X has a similar price but is much better outside the screen (although VRR also does the job in Asus).
@CGD.StudioАй бұрын
Agreed. Saw some folks on Reddit who bought it a month or two ago. They had a much worse experience than me as the software wasn't even released at that point, which is just baffling. Once the Zone gets discounted, it might be worth considering for some people. Right now, though, it's just way too expensive. The Ally X, for this amount of money, is definitely the better option. Or the upcoming MSI Claw 8 if Lunar Lake ends up delivering.
@ModsyyyyyАй бұрын
@CGD.Studio The promotion may come quickly, I don't know about other countries, but I recently wrote to two stores in the UK and Zotac is on the shelves, which doesn't surprise me. The next question is whether Zotac will handle the software or whether it will be their first and last console.
@CGD.StudioАй бұрын
Yeah, not sure myself. On the one hand, they've gone above and beyond with the hardware, and they've come up with something really interested and perhaps even unique. So in that sense, I can't imagine a world where they just give up. Then again, if they can only sell like a 100 of these then there's no chance they'll ever fully flesh it out. :/ It'll be interesting to see what happens, that's for sure.

Something less is best. We don't want somewhere that's going to eat resources & slow things down. I only use legion space to check for update, same with Armory crate.
@CGD.StudioАй бұрын
Agreed, although, you know, they should still provide… something, you know? 😂 I mean, there’s no way to _close_ to the Zotac launcher. Like, what? Pressing the assigned button doesn’t remove it from the screen, you literally have to swipe from the top to decrease the size of the window, or from the bottom to bring up the taskbar. That’s just… inexcusable in my opinion. Just one of many examples.

Rog Ally X or Zotac Zone?
@CGD.StudioАй бұрын
ROG Ally X without a doubt. No one should be buying the Zotac Zone right now. 😅
@ModsyyyyyАй бұрын
@CGD.Studio I assumed so. Although two people wrote to me that Zotac is better, which I doubt . Could you answer me two things (because I assume you had/have both, so you have a direct comparison). How much more efficient is Ally very noisy (plus there are cases of faulty fans that make strange sounds). I can simply buy both at a similar price and I'm leaning towards Ally X, the only thing I like about Zotac is the screen, but it's not enough. Because that's probably the only advantage of the Zotac screen, heh?
@CGD.StudioАй бұрын
@@Modsyyyyy Uh, it's not better. 😅For some folks it might be the better option, sure, but _objectively_ it just isn't worth the asking price. If it had a 70/80Wh battery it'd be a more competitive fight, and perhaps a bit more RAM (although I'm _personally_ okay with 16GB). Yeah, the only real advantage that the Zotac has is the display. That's basically it. The Ally, if I'm not mistaken, is the only mainstream option that has _two_ fans instead of one (the MSI Claw does too, but that thing isn't worth buying at all). So it's incredibly silent in most scenarios. You can hear it once you're pushing it, sure, but the fan noise isn't overwhelming at all, even on the stock settings and fan curves. The Zotac, on the other hand, is _much_ louder at anything above 20W. Last night, a regular Windows update forced the Zotac into a boot loop. I had to reinstall the whole thing through a custom W11 image from the official website. Sure, it has its strengths and benefits, but don't waste your money, go with the Ally X or, even better, wait a few weeks and see what ASUS, Lenovo, and MSI have in store for CES 2025. The Claw 8 will supposedly be a very competitive device, and it'll cost just _slightly_ more than the Zotac.

It makes a huge difference, that's for sure. Although, honestly, these 7" didn't seem all that small to me because of the _display_ itself. If you crank up the brightness and if you're playing something even remotely colorful, your eyes are instantly glued to the screen you can't even notice anything else. 😁 But yeah, the first company that comes out with an 8" OLED with 24/32GB of RAM for less than a thousand (and a bigger battery) will make some serious waves.

Do you realize how much more powerful that $900 MSI Claw 8 is gonna be compared to this? lool. I get the OLED which is cool & all but at the end of the day it’s not a substitute for performance. My favorite handheld I own is the one with the most horsepower, & it’s not one of two OLED gaming devices I also own.
@CGD.StudioАй бұрын
That’s totally fair. I don’t expect it to be all that much powerful (if at all), but it’ll surely be more efficient. Based on all benchmarks (from laptops, at least), it performs on par with the Z1 Extreme. Unless you saw something I didn’t? 🤔 in which case, please share.
@edwardlashley3572Ай бұрын
It also has an 80 watt battery but it’s running a type of chip that could drastically increase what this battery can do. That’s one of core benefits of this arc tech. It’s said to be stupidly more efficient than most of the stuff running windows.

@edwardlashley3572 oh definitely, you just mentioned performance and power, that’s why I only focused on that. 😁 Why do you mention the Claw 8 btw? I didn’t criticize it, in fact I’m quite hyped for its release! And yeah, it’s obviously the better choice, there’s no doubt about it. No OLED but it hs everything else. If Intel delivers on the software side of things and drivers, it could be a phenomenal device.
@edwardlashley3572Ай бұрын
I’m not currently purchasing any of this tech but you said it’s the most powerful you’ve seen & yet something is about to come out that is far more powerful & price competitively & it suggests that this device it probably dead in the water. Just horrible timing on their part. But it matters little to me. I’m overflowing with tech already so I’m just gonna skip this round. If you have the ability to cloud stream it’ll put into perspective the craziness of how expensive this tech is & despite how neat it is not entirely necessary. Not today anyway. Gforce now will let you stream a Nvidia 4070 with 24 gigs of RAM. You can play any game on ultra settind above 60fps with ray tracing turned all the way up on using a steam deck with that setup. lool.

I said it’s the most powerful? 🤔 in the video? When? Seriously, I’m confused. 😅 I mean, it’s up there, but yeah, in two months or so a lot of new and better stuff is gonna come out. And by the way, as I mentioned in the video, I don’t think anyone should buy the Zotac Zone, especially not at its current price. It came too late and offers just a few unique bells and whistles, but they’re not worth the premium. So we agree completely on all fronts. 😁

To be fair, people are always saying: give me trackpads and give me an OLED. 😅 Zotac delivered, at least on the OLED part. The trackpads are horrendous.

@CGD.Studio Sorry for being harsh lol.. I listen to a hot garbage 3060ti daily and have very low tolerance for Zotac incompetence

@Thesilmar oh totally get that, I didn’t expect a _good_ Zotac Zone, if you get what I mean 😂 hopefully the fan doesn’t die in 6 months

Oh definitely, you’re not missing out on anything. 😂 Why both the Steam Deck _and_ the Ally? People mostly focus on one of the two.
