I read the whole article on their website and it is huge and I do mean HUGE. They were taking soooo many factors into consideration....for instance ergonomics. 18 pages full of information, verdicts, graphs, charts. It's probably the biggest and most complicated comparison I've ever seen. A lot of work behind it.

This driver was fair with all his comments on all the cars. In fact I was impressed with how honest he was on some of his comments. If you have ever driven a 11 second qtr mile car through the canyons then you know it is a "wild ride"... it is hard to balance that kind of power in a front engine car with the tail so light. I love the ZR1, but you can not beat mid-engine handling and feel. This test is about balance and driver involvement and the Cayman S has it all.

His comments were spot on for the ZR1's characteristics. Just in my limited experience driving the ZR1 in Assetto Corsa with FFB wheel, pedals and H-pattern shifter, the way he describes how it drives is EXACTLY how I would describe it. To me, the ZR1 is almost as much of a handful as a Ferrari F40 and the Ferrari's main fault is the boost comes on SUPER fast, which makes it easy to overwhelm the rear tires, especially if you get a bit too pedal happy at corner exits.

Actually yes u can use the vette everyday. There are plenty of guys who used to drive Linginfelter Z06's, Z51's, etc. as daily drivers that came to the dealership all the time. This ZR1 has magnetic ride control and can be set to a softer dampining setting City and highway driving. And, actually the leaf springs in the Z06 have a stiffer dampening ability than coilovers do, hence their use.

I did a 1:29.672 in an all stock ZR1 on forza 3 using the controller with all assists off regular manual no clutch.Im pretty proud of that after seeing this guy's lap.

lol Forza's physics are kind of a joke compared to Assetto Corsa, Assetto Corsa Competizione, iRacing, Race Room, R-Factor, etc. The fact that you were able to do that with a controller should say everything. Try driving the ZR-1 in Assetto Corsa on Laguna Seca and tell me how you fare. The physics of the ZR1 in AC are remarkably realistic. I even tried swapping on racing slicks with no success of really taming the tail happiness of the ZR1 with no TCS/Stability Control. Its almost as difficult to control as an F40

Wait to see what the new 2010 traction control does for the ZR1. I read the 599-with the enzo engine-was almost as fast as the enzo at the ring, which is barely faster the the ZR1, the carrera GT is slower, 430 scuderia is slower. So what you're saying is with their fancy transmission and mid-engine design these cars are still slower but some how better, oh yeah because the vette makes more power

most supercharged V8's, no matter who the maker is, are gonna be a blast simply because of the surge of torque on the low end that feels almost heavenly. I have driven the new GT mustang and it is very well balanced compared to older models. But ive driven the Z06 and its built very well balanced in the since that a true sports car should be, only thing is, the amount of power in it, especially on low end makes it hard to keep traction, so its a similar comparison to the ZR1 i guess.

@Tr3ySw4g excuse me but blue devil is the cars CODE NAME when it was under development. does not mean the color of the car though there are blue accents in the car on the badges and the brake calipers(in tirbute to the code name)

Remember GM makes enough hp with the Roots blower, If they were serious the would replace it with a lysholm or screw type. Similar but much more power top end power. PS when I talk about the negated boost issue I am referring to centrifugal not roots or twin screw. And as you can see with more displacement you don't need as much boost. Powerband refers to average power output and percentage of peak throught the band, not peak #'s, and not related to displacement.

Yep, sure did and that's what was stated don't hate, look it up. As far as performance the mustang isn't too far off the M3, I agree in other catergories it is, hence half the price. Have you drive either? That old mustang was an absolute blast to drive.

The cranks i'm talking about are on the 1996 and new mod engines, the vette also has sleeved block and GM has pushrod engines with VVT, they just don't have it on the vette yet. Secondly, do you know anything about the suspension on the vette? You wouldn't think it so caveman if you did. Spastic 7.0 that runs 7k and was test to 8, was viewed as not needed for the price of the car, obviously the z06 performed well enough with out it.

the 911 will never be changed entirlye. which is why the carrera gt was such a treat for the porsche crowd. I feel caught between a rock and a hard place when it comes to the next vette. Chevy has never been a company to take risks always waiting for other to make moves then responding afterwords, never spearheading.lets hope the next vette will actually have original designwork and note of those lifted from other vehicles. we need a real hit vette to rival the 458 italia (in looks)

This car rips !!! They need to put it on a track where it can really stretch it's legs. Laguna saca is a motorcycle track. No wonder the guy likes the audi on this slow track. Bring this bad boy to watkins gleen, limerock or mid ohio and you would really see what it can do.

Google 4.0 m3 dyno chart then in a second window google ls3 6.2 vette dyno chart. Flip back and forth and tell me again which has a better powerband. By broader do you mean longer total or longer usable? Everywhere the vette makes 100 more ft/lbs and more hp, obviously until 6400 where it redlines. You understand that you can add tq or rpm and increase hp, so what makes your way better? Also gearing can fix "short" powerbands.

You know that Ford a really long time ago experimented with vvt, they used a pulley system that was controlled by oil pressure, it turned was a specific pressure was reached and altered the time, though it wasn't continuously variable. Advanced-like titanium lifters-vette and dual runner length intakes-ford focus, mustang. Funny the graph I saw peak was 235 at 5k, it was below 200 at 8k.

P.S. you realize pushrod engines are more compact and lighter than OHC right? And the vette engine is very light and compact for 6.2-7 liters, it weighs less than the m3's 4.0. Also, look at gm crate engines you can get 600+hp ls7's and 550hp ls3's with more aggressive cams and tuning. That would kind of kill mpg and emission's though. In fact a lot of racer prefer carbs to F.I.

Agreed the quality isn't as good but at 30K less, that can be over looked. Google 5.0 2010 mustang, Ford was testing it, some mag wrote about it. It was pre-production and wore good tires-more performance based than everyday use, but non-the-less turned the same time as the current m3. It also makes 412hp and does pretty well in all performance catergories considering it's 30k base price. If I had to pay I'd buy the Mustang, if not M3.

Yep. But I think the main reason why the Shelby was placed higher in this contest was because of the fact that it seemed more balanced and easier to drive than the ZR-1. He was saying how it was a very demanding car, and in another video he said that the Shelby was just a blast and that he didn't want to get out of it.

Man you can look at the accerlation difference between all other cars. That thing is a monster, but compared to the euro sport cars they still got us beat as for as the handling goes. But still the Corvette Zr-1 still is the best bargain out their today.

@neerredd Don't get me wrong: The ZR1 is a fantastic car, and one which demonstrates to the rest of the world that Americans can not only build a supercar, but can do so for a fraction of the cost of a European supercar. The Corvette and the 5.0 Mustang are game changers. That said, the Corvette isn't as rewarding to drive as a Cayman or Miata. The Corvette was just not as fun to drive as the 5 cars that placed ahead of it in the competition, and a driver's car is judged by its fun factor.

true, i'll give u that. But of the cars that can actually be used day to day that are not only track supercars, The ZR1 is still on top. The Apollo S is a beast, but obviously you cant use it everyday, its a track car with a twin turbo 700hp Audi V8.

@whattheheack I dont think you should even compare the v8 R8 and Zr1. Performance wise they arent even close. ZR1 competes with 599, Lp670, etc. Even the V10 R8 doesnt quite come close. V8 R8 and Zr1 are very close in price, but thats about it.

I read a review about the new Audi R8 with the v10 engine and they said it lost its magic and they prefer the v8 instead. It feels more heavier and it doesn't handle as well.

Car and driver also did a little test of the best V8 and posted the weights of the ls3, and aston martin and and r8, ferrari left theres out, but guess what the vettes engine was the lights and biggest displacement, oh and by the way they posted a fuild filled weight of 435lbs, the 415 is for crate engines - oil. It's in print in more than one place, so unfortunately it isn't lighter by at least 65lbs, which is quite sad considering it's 2.2 liters smaller.

You are aware that GM had plans to mid-engine on the c7, they even said so themselves, but when they needed bailout funds they scraped the idea for the next vette. You also realize that the vette has an excellent powerband without all those gimmicks-which they can still add to that engine. By the way the ls7 is fairly easily modded to 650hp without F/I. and the lsx block can support 2500hp.

I know. I think the driver mentioned how the R8 was more stable and balanced through the turns, and had less-mushy brakes; which I think will help the R8 do better.

yup i agree with you yet most of the people who comment or criticize these super car. zr1 is better then gtr and so on and they cant even afford one of these. they are both master piece considering the cost of owning one compared to lets say lambo or Ferrari and look and their ring time doesnt that tell you something. unlike other people i dont need some pride to run my mouth.

In fact most six's weigh more than the ls series V8, notice I said LS not LT or any previous small block chevy. Hell the ls9 with a supercharger weighs just over 500lbs, do you realize how heavy an iron block is, have you picked up a piece of cast iron before? Now I realize many manufacturers are using alunimum, Look up Katech z06 and you'll see a vette with real springs, more power and lighter weight-and it's slower than the ZR1

I don't think any street car could beat the vette by 10sec. As for the evo, you'd be suprised how much more there is to it than that. Anyone can skrew horsepower out of an engine (pull the pin and hope for the best!!). The hard and expensive part is getting the rest of the car to handle it. I've seen sti and evo tuners that can hang with ZR1s and Vipers. They are awesome cars but they cost about the same as the ZR1.

yea I have to say that guys needs to grow some____ I agree with ronman record breaking times arn't supose to be sunday drives the gtr is good but if you want a real car to talk about"besides the zr1" wait for the spec v but if you cant within 5 seconds of car in a 100 second race your not in the same class
