I think some flashback scene, where Azula is happily cheering for Zuko as he makes his first flame and how little Azula climbs into his bed when she´s scared would add a lot of tragedy to the final Agni Kai. Two other important facts worth mentioning: 1. While it hasn't been officially revealed, it is most likely that Zuko married Mai. According the the previous writer of the graphic novels, they get back together 3 years after their breakup from "The Promise". 2. In addition to her son Iroh, Firelord Izumi has a daughter. She was planned to be in Book 4 of The Legend of Korra (and might've been Mako's new love interest), but she was cut due to there being too many new characters already.

Zuko was the one to break in this case you’d call it generational trauma in his family. He survived a father who desired power and territory. A sister who inherited Ozai’s hungry ambitions for power with psychotic and psychopathic tendencies. He survived his father’s attempts at ending him. He went on to rightfully inherit the throne and make it right with his nation. He had a daughter Izumi and a grandson Iroh who inherited his courage and strength. I’d say that’s a job well done writing the wrongs within his family line.

One of the biggest complaints of “Legacy of the Fire Nation” was that the Royal tree was what had already been established. No mention of Iroh’s wife, or Azulon’s wife and mother.
