Say what you will about this Netflix adaptation, but one thing this show did really well is expand upon relationships within the Fire Nation. I really love the depth they added to Ozai, like the look on his face as he scarred Zuko & seeing him interact with Iroh, since we never do in the cartoon. I also love that they tied Zuko's crew to his backstory. It really gave their newfound loyalty a lot of weight

Oh fuck, you just helped me figure out what I find so weird about this show. The fire nation side of the story got expanded, while the Gaang's side of the story got compressed. I believe 6 seasons would have gone hard with The Storm, The Library, & The Day of Black Sun as extra finales. That way they would've had time to give the same expansion to the Gaang.

@cmcgccjsl9 ай бұрын
When you judge this show on how well it's telling the story it's trying to tell, how well defined the characters are, on whether their motivations and journeys they go on make sense, you have to acknowledge this show is a success. Then you throw in some truly special performances by the actors and you have something that is clearly a good show. And only suffers in comparison to another show with the same IP. I mean the dark Knight trilogy doesn't make Batman the animated series not good.
@Corey3139 ай бұрын
Frfr 💯💯. Well said
@GermansLikeBeer9 ай бұрын
Yeah I dunno about that. The non-Fire Nation character writing is really weak, even on its own terms. The dialogue is bad even by Netflix standards. The writers apparently thought the expression is "tell, don't show" for how much they do that. And the character direction is poor, giving the actors little to work with. And that's all without comparing it to the animated show; once you do that it's over (and there's no reason you shouldn't be allowed to do so - it's an adaptation after all). It's like a 6/10 at absolute best.
@YardenHaddad9 ай бұрын
@@GermansLikeBeer People who say things like this tend to be ignoring all the problems with the animated show and its short comings in the same areas because of the emotional and nostalgic connections they have to the original IP. It colors their view of the original show and truly prevents them from being objective with such an important part of their childhood. The OG show was not perfect especially the first season which is the weakest part of the OG show. For me ATAS season 1 is 8/10, the show overall is a 9.5/10, nearly perfect. This Live Action Adaptation stand on its own very well as an 8/10 for me and most fans. The minority of people trash the show and most of their arguments(reviews) are not even close to being as objective as you are being. Most of their criticisms boil down to "it's not a 1 to 1 adaptation". Which is simply ignorance since no one does that with Super Hero shows/movies which are all adaptations that people allow to live on their own.
@GermansLikeBeer9 ай бұрын
@@YardenHaddad Yeah, none of that is true. I would recommend rewatching season 1 of the original, keeping an eye on things like characterization, themes, and acting (voice acting for the animated show). The live action is weaker in every way. There is nothing it does better, or even equally. It's not nostalgia, either. I watched ATLA for the first time all the way through as an adult, and I think it's vastly better than the live action. And most of the criticism I've seen of the Netflix show is well founded and articulated. I have not seen a single critique video whose arguments boil down to it not being a 1:1 adaptation. I think this is just projection on your part.
@withxoutxlife9 ай бұрын
@@GermansLikeBeer "I have not seen a single critique video whose arguments boil down to it not being a 1:1 adaptation. I think this is just projection on your part." With all due respect, do you have working eyes? Those sorts of comments are everywhere on reaction videos lol. The biggest issue with this fanbase, is there is no cohesive 'collective' and people in general can't agree on what they actually wanted from this adaptation. The live action adaptation has its faults, but there are people unironically calling it a trash show, which is just blatantly false. It might not hold a candle to the original which will always hold a special place in our hearts, nor does it have the time and structure to flesh the characters out more. Yet this adaptation has done quite well to maintain the original plot, while retelling the story in a new way, and even adding meaningful new plot elements that have enhanced certain aspects of the story. Case in point, this very episode added far more depth between Zuko and his crew than in the original animated series. There is plenty of room for improvement, and I hope they listen to the *valid* criticisms to enhance the next two seasons, and hopefully they get more budget to give us more episodes. That way we have more time to get to know the characters, as those humanizing moments are critical to the backbone of the show. It will also give them more time to create story instead of utilizing exposition. That said, the original season 1 of the original had quite a lot of exposition itself, and I think fan viewers are often dismissive of that fact when critiquing the live action. If one is going to give objective feedback on the first season of the adaptation, they cannot keep ignoring this fact.

I’ve also noticed that Gordon Cormier’s performance seems to improve based on how skilled his scene partner is. His best scenes have been with the Gyatso and Zuko actors who are both great. Overall I think Gordon is well cast as Aang and I think as he gets older and becomes more experienced his performance will be more consistent. And Dallas Liu crushed it this episode. His performance is one of the highlights of the show.

@@SeanTanktop That's exactly what I thought about the acting performances. I think, this season, the actors are kind of trying to mimic their cartoon counterparts. Hopefully, by next season, they would be more confident in their characters and really bring it on.

Netflix's ATLA is boring and immature - way too much exposition spelling out every little thing, without any nuance or mystery. The tears come because they use music and nostalgia from the original show, so we already feel emotional - emotional manipulation. The acting much of the time is wooden and bland.
