Non Metallic Metal - also known as NMM - is a painting technique, that many miniature painters consider to be advanced. In this short video, you will learn how to paint non metallic metal on your miniatures and what are the main principles for painting NMM.
In the video, I use mainly layering and glazing to build reflection on my miniature. Whether your are painting Warhammer or Marvel: Crisis Protocol or any other miniature game really, you will have to learn to layer and glaze properly if you want advance your miniature painting skills. This is especially true in the case of Non Metallic Metal.
Many Warhammer weapons (such as power swords for space marines or aeldary) will look just great with non metallic metal. Even though I am painting mainly this Bouncy Boingrot miniature from Warhammer: Age of Sigmar Gloomspite Gitz, I am also paintng power weapon to demonstrate the blending process for non metallic metal.

Fun fact: Metal armor seen under diffuse lighting (e.g. the sky) looks just grey fabric , only with slightly more shiny highlight than fabric has. The style of NMM we minipainters are used to mostly occurs with highly polished metal under artificial lighting with a few spot light sources. Most medieval era armor would probably not be highly polished. So if you can't paint NMM just chill, there's nobody under the sun who says your little dudes _have_ to wear chrome armor. :)
@Zumikito
@Zumikito 4 жыл бұрын
I agree, you have to sort of emphasize the nmm with more extreme contrast so it looks metallic
@codelicious6590
@codelicious6590 2 жыл бұрын
Im still struggling to achieve an outcome I am satisfied with but it seems to me, once one has the technique down its just a matter of using artificial textures to tone down the apparent high-polished look and bring it down to more realistic appearance.

Subscribing so I can catch new stuff and come back when I'm ready to stop slathering on metallics. Thanks for including all your tools (and links) in the description too. Does the brush you're using at @2:23 always keep that good of a tip or do you find it flaying over time? I had some DaVinci brushes but no matter how careful I thought I was being they slowly lost their point. Likely a combination of user error and natural progression of a brush but just curious.

Hi Zumikito! What would your approach be to painting nmm chainmail? I found some old drawf longbeards on which im considering doing nmm, but im not sure how I would go about doing the chainmail parts.

Thanks for the nice videos. I am new in this hobby and enjoy your videos a lot. Will you please explain a bit more how you exactly blend the midtones so smoothly together after they dried? I noticed that you mentioned glazing and I watched your video on this topic, but still dint fully understand how you did it by using only 3 midtones without introducing more colors!

So lets say that I have highlight color, midtone 1, midtone 2 and shade. I take highlight color and thin it so it's transparent and glaze it into midtone 1 (just over transition) . Then I take midtone 1 and glaze it in the same way into midtone 2. Then I take midtone 2 and glaze it into shade. It's all the same 👌hope that helps

@@Zumikito If I understood correctly, you always start with the brightest color and mix it with water and glaze it toward the darker tone and repeat the same for other colors.

@@bahmanzaker5961 yes, but this process is done after sketching all the tones first as shown in the video
