Commodus is such a tragic figure. Born into the second place in the eyes of his own father. No chance to do anything right or to prove himself with the result of deep character flaws. Zurick you catched that pretty good.

@@battlebrother2390 Maximus had a family that loved him. He had far more than Commodus had, who in spite of being of royal blood, felt isolated and alone. Maximus may or may not have had a loving father figure in his youth, but he certainly had father figure and mentor in the army as he climbed the ranks and eventually gained the affection of Marcus Aurelius himself. Some boys learn how to be men without, but for many children and youth, not having the guidance of a strong patriarch is very weakening. Why else do you think that much of society today has so many problems? Lack of stable father figures.

Don't get me wrong Phoenix is an amazing actor, but his character Commodus was not rejected by his father out of spite. Being a ruler of any kind bears great responsibility (and consequences) and his father knew what kind of man he was. Commodus was not interested in improving the living conditions of Roman citizens, he just wanted the validation from them that he felt he deserved from his own father.

If you haven't already, I highly HIGHLY suggest you check out the anime "Attack on Titan" (Shingeki no Kyojin). It has everything all those masterpieces you've mentioned have, and even more. Some say (including myself) that Attack on Titan is one of the greatest pieces of fiction ever written, up there with the likes of The Lord of the Rings. No, don't cringe because it's anime. Trust me. Attack on Titan is beyond anime. People who hate anime love Attack on Titan. That is how great it is. If you want an idea of it's greatness, I highly recommend the tribute video "Cruel World" also made by Zurik23M - the person who made THIS video (the original got deleted but others have re-uploaded it. Don't forget to put on the subtitles because it's in Japanese!). It perfectly highlights how powerful the messages and themes of Attack on Titan are (up until Season 3). This show tackles the theme of death and hatred from many angles in a realistic way. From Season 4, it additionally delves in the themes of racism, elevating the story even higher than it already was. (Warning: Only watch ANY AOT video ONCE and wipe it out of your memory, because this show is all about the mysteries of the world it is set in, so you should go into the show knowing as little as possible. This show will throw you question after question, and it is those mysteries that makes this show so hooking, aside from the deep themes, great characters, AMAZING animation, and gorgeous music.)
