$3500 camera vs $700 camera for KZbin Talking head shots
LINK TO BUY THIS CAMERA: amzn.to/3xA7Eba
LENS I USED FOR THIS VIDEO: amzn.to/3SfLFOu
Can you tell the difference between a video shot from a $3500 camera and one from a $700 camera in a controlled studio environment? Well if you know exactly what to look for you probably can - but if youre someone who’s needs are a shots like this one youre seeing right now - there may be a vanishingly small difference between the two!
My name is Nicholas Johnson, and this is the Space Warehouse…
I am recording what your seeing right now on a what just might be the best consumer mirrorless camera for video ever made, in my opinion, the Sony a7Siii. This camera has some NUTSO capabilities and basically the best feature set available for less than 6000 dollars. Its got in-body stabilization, its got object tracking, and this eyeball autofocus thing that can follow a person basically running at you at f/1.4 and never lose focus. Its got dual processors, a buffer you cant even hit and can basically shoot video in the dark. It can record 4k video at 120 frames per second in 10 bit color and eat up a 64gb memory card in about 4 minutes. Its simply an absolute unit.
is that because the ZVE10 uses an APSC Sensor, a literally smaller imaging sensor, a crop body, they call it; at the same 1.8 aperture, you will indeed get a bit less bokeh in the back ground. The stuff behind me will be oh so slightly less out of focus. ZVE10 - a7Siii… ZVE10, a7Siii… And that, my friends is literally it!
HOWEVER, if all youre going to record is someone sitting at a table, talking into the camera like Im doing now - you can save $2800 bucks because with this little fella, 99% of the population won’t be able to pick out which picture comes from which!!
What the ZVE10 DOESNT have is any image stabilization at all. It doesnt have a viewfinder. And in 4k the rolling shutter is pretty awful if youre panning quickly. It sure does shoot 120p, but only in 1080p. The 4k maxes out at 30 fps, and anything above 24fps suffers a bit of a crop.
THIS picture is from the new $700 Sony ZV-E10. Its also in 4k, and in fact - this is a 6k picture supersampled into 4k. One problem you get by doing that is a pretty terrible rolling shutter - but you dont care, youre just filming a guy on a tripod looking into the lens.
One thing you’ll be able to notice if you look super closely, and Ill clip back and fourth between the two cameras - is that because the ZVE10 uses an APSC Sensor, a literally smaller imaging sensor, a crop body, they call it; at the same 1.8 aperture, you will indeed get a bit less bokeh in the back ground. The stuff behind me will be oh so slightly less out of focus. ZVE10 - a7Siii… ZVE10, a7Siii… ZV-E10, a7Siii - And that, my friends is literally it!
Yes, the colors aren’t exactly the same, they’re not the same sensor (unlike the a6600, which does use the same image sensor as the ZVE10) - but they’re both sony colors, and Im able to record with both cameras in HLG3 for expanded dynamic range. They’re both extremely clean pictures and with the 4k, both are able to punch in 200% without losing any quality when exported to 1080p.
My point is, if youre someone who doesnt need to MOVE while filming, and doesnt need SUPER CREAMY, just delicious 4k 5x slow motion with literally no loss in quality - if youre someone who just shoots from a tripod in relatively controlled lighting, you dont need a crazy expensive camera. The ZVE10 does have object tracking, it has Eyeball Autofocus, it can output through HDMI 4:2:2 8-bit color to an external recording device. It has a really good picture and is a stellar interviewing camera.
So.. To be clear, Im not making any claim that the ZVE10 is as good as a 3500 camera - its not. The a7Siii is a WAY better camera, overall.. But for a shot where youre just talking in your bedroom, or in your warehouse even in low light, like youre seeing here. This thing might be all you need! MOST of the people who ever see it won’t know the difference. Now Im going to go to dinner - but Im going to take both of these cameras with me, and I’ll shoot a little low light footage of whatever in front of me while Im out there.
This here must be the ZVE10, Ill bet that looks just great! Then, here’s the same scene in a7Siii land - well Im going to have to guess that that looks great also; how could it not??

I watched your video in 75” screen and back to back o was able to notice the difference. Now I watched the video on my iPhone, 99 % of people are going to watch the content on their phones anyways. It’s not 99%. As of 2021, 63% is the number. If you include tablets, the total is 71%. However a key metric is 90% new brand recognition amongst mobile KZbin users. As a marketer, I would suggest most startups KZbinr’s get the Sony ZV E10. It’s better to have 3X cameras for redundancy and flexibility for multipoint shoots.

I cannot agree more everything in this video. In 2016, we were running a KZbin channel, shooting in studio with infinite white and using a Canon EOS M with the kit lens. Back then we were far ahead in terms of contents from our competitors which spent too much on their equipment and we were just doing that with the quarter of their budget.

I don't know anything about lenses and I'm reading wonders about SIGMA and TAMRON lenses, I don't know if this can help improve the quality somewhat and is worth the extra investment or should I just go with the kit that comes with the camera. My idea with the camera is to make videos like the one you have just made, podcast type, interviews, webcam, static and very occasionally some cinematic video outside (the cinematic videos outside as you said that the camera has no stabilizer I understand that I would have to do them with tripod and gimbal). I want to record 4k30fps. Do you recommend me to make the extra investment in a SIGMA or TAMRON lens to increase the quality and sharpness or is it not worth the investment? Thanks

What lighting would you suggest for a dim light gym setting and for an apartment lighting for Sony - Ev10? Like a ring light or a different type of light for clarity and crip video? I bought the sigma 16 mm f 1.4, but I know lighting can be key. If I may ask a second question, what lights are you using for your set up in this vid for a more warmer look. Thanks. My story is I am finishing my masters degree and also lost an organ and almost clinically died twice. So I am going into the fitness sector. I believe I look the part, have a story, and have the credibility via years training and education to add a niche into fitness. However, the videography and editing....uhm not so much. I actually remade this video on my newer 'photography only' channel with a more dimly lit look like you said (kzbin.info/www/bejne/rmKxc6eBn92nj5Y) The lighting suggestion will all come down to how close you plan to be to the camera and to the lights.. If youre just going to be sitting at a desk and talking like I was, then yes a ring light would work pretty well.. Even better would be a amaran 100d with a softbox on it. The bigger the light source, the nicer it will look. If youre going to be in a dimly lit gym and you can bring lights into that gym, then I would use a 'grid' on the front of a softbox on something like an amaran 100d or a smallrig 120d (those are cheap versions of nice lights and Im actually using both of them in the newer version of this video - in a dimly lit warehouse setting). So your aim, for really crisp video, is to make the light thats hitting you bright enough that you can have your camera set at 1/50 shutter speed 24fps, f/1.4 aperture and an ISO at like 200-300 max. That will give you the absolute best picture out of that camera.
@FelixChamber
@FelixChamber Жыл бұрын
Yea a mention of the lighting would have been great. Cause you can certainly only make a zv look comparably good to something from the alpha series with very good lighting. A comparison of the a7s3 and the zv under cheap or terrible lighting might have brought out the differences a bit more but would have also hinted the viewers as to how they get they budget camera to look relatively awesome more clearly

Would this video podcast be just you, or with guests? Because shooting yourself - it sounds like youve already got everything you need, well.. I assume if you bought that microphone, you must have also gotten something that can accept XLR input and record it. If not, I would say get a RodeCaster Pro II. The thing is simply amazing, it can accept 4 microphones and also USBC sources like your computer or USB mics. If youre doing a podcast with two or more people, it still depends on how you want to set it up. It gets boring if its just one wide shot of two people that never changes, so I would eityher shoot it in 4k and zoom in back and fourth depending on whos talking - or get a second camera.

@@vlcheish this is a good point. dxo scores the 85mm much sharper over the 50mm 1.8 using the same Sony body. i would try a test using the same lens even if FOV is different(or try moving camera back) because lens can impact color and sharpness from copy to copy. the other option is to maybe try and stop the lens down enough so that they are much closer in performance because once again the 85mm holds the biggest advantage when using larger apertures. f5.6 more even fight most likely.

@@navisidhu2118 I mean, a small fan is less distracting than having to stop and wait for the thing to cool down. There are two other things you can try! There’s a setting called “auto power off temp” and you can set that to ‘high’ and it will stay on a lot longer.
