Why do people dislike the NC’s looks? I think it’s one of the best looking Miatas. Especially in the top trims.

Agreed…The NC2/3 club, particularly in red might honestly be my favorite looking Miata and this is coming from an ND2 owner. The NC1s are kinda fugly though… The NC2/3 is definitely the better car to build for the track, much more durable transmission and 2.5 swaps with cams make a good amount of power. I adore my ND2, but sometimes I wish I would have found a clean NC2/3 and saved some money. The ND2 with a few minor mods is such a great street car though

I don’t usually comment on car reviews, but I felt compelled on this one. I’m an ND2 owner and don’t care for the NC styling, so I’ll put that out there. It seems to me that putting a modded NC3 soft top against a modded ND3 RF is not really a good comparison. Stock vs stock, soft top vs soft top would be more fair. The RF is heavier and quieter than the soft top (we own both soft top and RF) so the RF is closer in weight to the soft top NC. The weight difference is noticeable to me, and the noise level is very significant. You noted that the weight was similar and the ND was quieter. Both of these are different with the soft top. The RF is also much more expensive than the soft top, so that also isn’t a fair comparison. However, I think your review was fair overall, and informative.

I had a NC2 BBR 200 when I lived in the UK. I remember when i sold it, the new owner whos other car was a 996 Turbo came back from test driving the NC and said he couldn't believe how well it handled, sounded, performed. A few months later he mentioned he sold the 911 Turbo because he could never choose it over thr NC on any given day

Having owned every generation a few times, the NC, although beaten in every measurable way against the ND, possesses some of the best handling and communication of any car I've driven. When the NC came out, we were in a recession and in order save money the car was designed from the RX8, mainly it's suspension, subframe etc all the good bits and it absolutely shows when driving it. I could do herioc stunts in the NC that I wouldn't dare try in another vehicle, just because I had such reasonable assurance that I knew how the car would behave and it often behaved in the that way. At the moment I drive an NB as I need to have at least one miata at anytime and I share a garage with a 20 M2 C and the miata is so much more fun than thr M2C, it's just so much car for the street but it's fun in it's own way don't get me wrong but I do think about selling the NB and getting another NC3, or ND3 as I haven't driven the ND3 yet but value wise the NC wins all day.

Lanny alignment. Perfect canyon car. Great review on the newer cars. For me, the best car would be a 19 that I could justify putting money into to make the car right that for me. Spending 42k on a new one that I would change the suspension? Currently own a 19 mustang Bullitt with magnaride, and Ford racing m 9602 m suspension. Heavy car, but terribly fast on the corners.

FYI, the ND3 has a new steering rack with slightly less friction and custom programming by Mazda. However, everything you feel (on-center and loading up in corners) is artificial, it is the electric motor working 'against' you, hence no increase in actual feedback. So the ND3 might feel more 'natural', but the ND1/ND2 steering is actually more 'honest'. I wrote a long technical thread on the subject if you are interested.

For third year I drive 2009 NC2 2.0 soft top with OEM Recaros, Ohlins R&T, BBR exhaust header and few other mods making it around 180hp. I also drove fully spec ND3 Recaro 2.0 soft top several times and I confirm the review. ND is a superior car in every way, but with NC2 I get 80% of the ND3 and definetly 100% of the experience. I just love the hydraulic steering, port injection and this era of cars, it's just a great experience for the value, specially when a bit modified.

I absolutely love my NC2. It's so well engineered. A great balance of good design without getting over-complicated. I think the bit of movement and uneasiness in the Ohlins probably comes down to clicker settings. I have them on mine, and can make the car very stiff and anchored with the clickers. 3 clicks in the rear can be the difference between a very stable and a very playful rear end. I do widh they had more compression to keep it from blowing through.

@JETZcorp
@JETZcorp 3 ай бұрын
I don't get the 2.5 thing unless you're building for a race class. The last thing on Earth I want from my NC is more torque, a lower redline, and a slower throttle response. You can get 15hp or more from the 2.0 with exhaust and cams. Do Stage 2+ cams with springs, and you can bring the redline up to 8k or so. Or throw a Rotrex at it and get some big-time top-end power.

2.5 won't have worse throttle response...it's still NA. But aside from that, yes I'm with ya. 2.0 with cam and header will be more fun, and basically as fast as a cammed 2.5. @@JETZcorp
@JETZcorp
@JETZcorp 3 ай бұрын
@colinbowman8816 It's a slower throttle response for things like heel/toe where the extra engine inertia slow it down in a free rev. Heavier crank, funny rod geometry, and the balance shafts unless you deleted them. But yes, if you're already hooked up in a gear and whack it, or are stabbing it to modulate a drift or something, the 2.5 will be limited by the e-throttle just like the 2.0 is. And the rotating inertia can be offset with a lightweight flywheel. I think the best readily-available answer for NA performance is probably a hybrid 2.4 build. That's a 2.5 bore on a 2.3 stroke, and use the best forged internals and biggest cams you can find to spin it like a Honda. That combo gives you a significantly better piston speed than a K24 (which also doesn't live very long at 8k+ unless built to the hilt). In my perfect world, I'd probably like to build a 2.1 by using a 2.0 crank in a 2.5 block, spanning the extra deck height with longer rods to get a beautiful rod ratio and some serious high-rev capability. But that involves some parts that don't exist, and it's not really worth it over the short-deck 2.0 engine.

I have looked at both of these cars in the used market in Canada. The ND3 cars are in the mid 30K range for a 2019 and up model. The club version of the NC3 is in the mid 20's. Every time I look for a Miata I ask myself what else I could buy for the money? I ended up buying a 2006 BMW Z4M and couldn't be happier with my decision.

As someone who has owned both (multiple times, and with a 2.5L), the ND is a clear winner. Grab an ND2 club for $21-24k and send it. I think a LOT of that is because he compared a stock ND1 to an NC with Ohlins. His main problem with the ND is the stock suspension tuning, and most NCs are also pretty awful from stock. The NC3 Club is the exception - it's still WAY too soft, but at least they improved the valving to make it competent. I think every Miata really needs a set of good coilovers, and once that happens, the ND is amazing. I love my NC2, and I prefer it over ND due to the looks, price, steering, modding potential, my ability to fit in it, and the price. It's hard not to be jealous of that weight reduction and better chassis rigidity. It's not worth an extra 20 large, but it's a sweet car.

Still don't know why the soft top gets a aluminium boot (trunk) and the PRHT is a steel one instead.

From a purely aesthetic perspective, I think the ND has a nice shape but worse "features" than the NC3, particularly for head and tail lights; like they took the NC and vacuum sealed around it. Tend to agree with sentiments of the "best" generation being the one that firstly, you can afford, and secondly, suits your preferences, whether that is looks, handling potential, age etc. Unless you have the opportunity to try each before you buy, I don't think (not having owned one lol) that you can really go wrong in terms of driving pleasure.

As for ND vs NC, I don't think there is a wrong answer. I feel my 30AE is an amazing dual-duty car, the little upgrades and newness compared to an NC are worth it for me. When I drive my NC I rarely even listen to the radio, I want to hear the car engine and feel the joy of a rag top open air roaster. Mazda can’t even give you a descent cup holder for a bottle of water in the current MX5. My NC grand touring 6 spd is just what I wanted in a roaster. I hope the next generation MX5 can be more like a NC in size. I still think Mazda builds great cars overall and is a great company.

I love Miata handling and driving dynamics but man... the engines are just sooooo unemotional and bland. Great cars though.
