I don't really understand Zidane's movement. I just can't break it down. I've never seen anyone move like him. I was very young when he was still around so I didn't get to watch him play but every time I see clips of him it puzzles me, I can't figure out what it is that makes him look so unique and I can't figure out why it's so effective. There are a few guys that even if you just saw their silhouette you'd be able to tell who they were just based on how they move, like Ronaldo and Messi for instance, Ronaldo is extremely explosive with every little movement he makes, very fast twitch muscle fibers, Messi with the ball glued to his feet and some insane agility being able to defy gravity, and then there's Zidane, you glance at him as he starts moving and you might think at first that he's some random slow guy that plays football with his mates for fun, everything moves in slow motion, but then somehow every little touch of the ball is unbelievably precise and effective and it just all flows so smoothly. I feel like you could get people to mimic the way Ronaldo/Messi move to a certain extent (obviously no one would be anywhere near as good at it) and have it look convincing, you could mimic Ronaldo's fast feet with his stepovers, you could mimic Messi's shoulder drop and his crazy feints, etc., because their style of movement is easy to break down, you can see it for what it is but I doubt anyone could mimic Zidane's movement, everything he does looks like it's something that shouldn't be happening. His style is legitimately one of a kind.
@daveybo2 жыл бұрын
Very well written. He really was a marvel. Even his arm movements look quite odd and deliberate. He could control the ball so deftly and delicately and then was able to rapidly generate a lot of power almost instantly with minimal movement. Let’s not even go into his accuracy. What a player.
@Garanon52 жыл бұрын
Well said. One of the all time greatest dribblers, without needing extra fancy moves. The precision and finesse he had with the ball just made it look so effortless. It's deceptively simple until you realize he's making fools out of the best defenders in the world.
@muglypunt9682 жыл бұрын
The thing about Zidane that is often overlooked and made him so dangerous was his unpredictability. He would start slow, first 10 mins knock balls all over, then would start passing short, maybe give a little darting run first 15, then he would starting using all three randomly. It used to leave defences unsure. He could get the ball run with it and then off load or receive knock a 40 yard pass and not get it again the whole play. The reason he glides pass people is because it was normally second half and they were so mentally exhausted they just tried to keep up. Zidane was a maestro and I very rarely use the phrase. Paul scholars is another I would group in the same category but Zidane will always be my king
@konradnakielski56822 жыл бұрын
I guess it came down to how unpredictable he was? He didn't need to be fast, other players approached him with caution because they had no idea what's gonna come next.
@jh11ful2 жыл бұрын
Excellent analysis. It's "all in the touch" [Zidane was always a few steps ahead because when he receives the ball, he orients it in a certain direction, which makes him dominant even when he appears to be slow]. The other thing that makes him great [he also talks about that], is that he dribbles when it's absolutely necessary; he's not going to bring the ball up just for the sake of dribbling. Because of that, he's the only player who looks stellar without the ball on his feet - he loves giving it back to teammates. Definitely the greatest midfield mastermind who's ever played

I first got intrigued by the name of Zidane when some team mate at Girondins Bordeaux told the press "Zidane has hands where other people have feet". He combined a silk touch, perfect body coordination and physical strength almost to perfection. And every move he did on the field, even the craziest back-heel passes and piriouettes, served some functional purpose. Nothing he did was for pure show for the TV cameras as it is the case with so many other technically gifted players.

...you could make a metaphor with a pin ball machine. Zidane gets rid of the ball but it keeps finding its way back to him. His team players seem to me that they want to pass the ball back to him. I cannot understand why Zizou is not mentioned among the GOATs. A much more complete player than CR. His dribbling is easily comparable to that of Messi and Maradona, though he was better at aerial ball control. Perhaps not the mot prolific goal scorer, but like Johan Cruyff said, "never compare a great player with a great goal scorer." Two very different things. Obviously, you need both, but where would the goal scorers be without the touch, the vision, the passing, and the dribbling of the playmakers? Only the chosen few could do it like Zizou. IMO, a very underrated player.
@berbafan672 жыл бұрын
I've never really watched him play, but from what I've seen in multiple videos he is the most technically complete player I have ever seen. Zidane brought grace to the game and the idea that there were different ways to dominate it. In his case, above all, the certainty for his team members that there was always someone who knew the answer. Be that as it may, in the first minutes of this video at least, the frivolous maneuvers are surprisingly often followed by sloppy, uninspired, and imprecisely timed passes, so the benefit of the trick goes to waste. It probably still had an effect because it unsettles the opponent in the medium term. But there is also beauty in the precision of simple things that he too seldom recognizes here. Is it still beautiful? Certainly! Does it celebrate the beauty of the game as much as his personal artistry? To be completely honest, a little less often than one would like.

One thing I notice with zidane is the his football work and ball control made it look like his foot was a giant blue tack He’s a great player abs he played sone nice football

It looks very easy and no flashy moves but it all comes down to manipulating your opponent. Notice how many of them trip, it's because he quickly swaps direction when they change weight on their feet. You also saw this behavior with Ronaldinho but he also liked to do flashy stuff obviously.

Zidane is unlike the current players who heavily rely on speed. He's slow by today's standards but still need to speed down to watch his movements. Thats how great he is
