Partly because the compilation is sloppy, its a first touch video with a tonne of failed first touches... the first two clips in the video are him flicking it too high allowing the two defenders time to steal it back from him, only to then fumble and ZZ ends up with it and the other is him accidentally kicking it at his standing leg and it luckily remaining in his control. He is a legend no doubt but this compilation isn't the one to prove it.

Always wondered what set Zidane apart because a lot of players have an amazing first touch where they kill the ball on impact - Messi, Modric, Ozil, KDB, etc. It is that with Zidane, the ball always lands in space after the touch. Everything is intentional. And most of the first touches are with an offensive intent. Every first touch is a set up for playing it forward. Just remarkable.

Probably the most unique first touch variations ever seen. He was very unorthodox with his touches that's most likely the reason how he was able to wiggle out of high probability ball loss scenarios. So many players have just as good as a touch as him or better. Ronaldinho, Neymar, Ibrahimovic, CR7, Bergkamp, Berbatov, R9 are the ones that immediately come to mind. With Zidane it looks weird because he is so tall. He reminds me of a silkier Thomas Muller in the way he moves. If you look at the two, they are so gangly and tall that dribbling normally don’t come naturally to them as it takes a tremendous amount of agility and balance. Zidane and Ibrhamovic both have it.

A widespread misunderstanding is ball should be stopped as close as possible, you will see this kind of stopping videos all the time, an example is Marcelo once stepped on a high ball and everyone says that's brilliant. In fact, that is not a great way to do it. Zidane barely stops the ball under his feet. He would fully utilize the space around him to direct, not stop, the ball. Put it somewhere the defender just barely cannot reach yet good enough for his next several moves. So elegant!

What always fascinates me about Zidane is that he doesn't look like he has technique. His body and appearance look more like a defender or a goalkeeper. In case 1, Berbatov's first touch was OK as long as he wasn't under pressure but in no way he's in the tier of Ronaldinho or even Bergkamp. Ronaldinho could flick the ball over his head with a single touch, Berbatov has never done something like that. Moreover, I could name a lot of players with better stationery touch like Van Persie, Cristiano Ronaldo and Ibrahimovic so let's not overrate him. He was OK but not top tier. In case 2 - he was hardly average.

All in all, the late 90s and the first half of the 00s were the dark ages of football. Showboating and first touches tended to slow the game down.

Tell us you never watched a full match from that era without telling us you never watched a full match from that era. As if today is any better.. There is no showboating today, but you have fouls every 2 seconds, players falling down and simulating, arguing with the referee and chest bumping the opponents like they're about to fight. If that's not slowing the game down i don't know what is. It's easy to confuse it just by watching the highlights, you think all they did was showboating but they did so much more. Besides, even if they only did showboating and nothing else, it's still more interesting than modern football. I'd rather watch 1 Ronaldinho for the rest of my life than all these modern players. Today you only have either showboaters or efficient players. But back then you had players who are both showboating and being efficient in the same time.

Love the video. Great moments of Zidane's incredible technique. The title of the video is rubbish though. Players like Bergkamp, Ronaldinho and Maradona have easily matched Zidane's first touch. Just like Zidane, they showed us numerous times they could control the most difficult balls out there and did so very consistently throughout their careers.
