The portrayal of Dane/Dawn is frustrating as it ruins the symbolism of the entire thing. As the whole point of this battle from a story perspective is to give Ned and Howland PTSD, and get the shot of Dawn propped up on Lyana's bed to reference Jon being Azor Ahai. With Dawn being the "bleeding star" Azor Ahai is born beneath. So if half the point of the sequence is a cool sword being symbolic, why not make the sword look cool?

I remember seeing an DBZ AMV with the Mortal Kombat theme and when they say "flawless victory" they show Trunks sheathing his sword this way. I wish I can find that video but I have no idea who made it or if it's still up. I don't advice using a real sword when trying this. It can't be done and I cut myself up.

I am curious if you guys have looked into, studied or practice established Lightsaber forms. Not a criticism at all! I am just curious if you've taken the time to see how those forms apply to practical or historical sword fighting.
@KnightSquireАй бұрын
Yes, and I've known a few superb longsword practitioners go along to popular light saber groups. It's interesting, but obviously a very very different practice. A human moving a sword shaped weapon is obviously limited in scope to the degree where there is of course some cross over. But in my experience they don't have the know how, physical skill or experience to fence with most intermediate longsword fencers in full sparring conditions. Their lack of hand protection alone leads to a variety of rules or behaviours that do not apply. It's a cool, fun, very visual thing to practice... but if someone wanted to fence well (as in as we believe swordman would have conducted themselves with these weapons when they were used), practice Historical fencing. To be clear, I'm not condemning them, lots of things can have some parallels to historical swordsmanship, like LARPing probably does. But even if a lightsabers club curriculum borrows more from historical sources than the films, or lightsabers forms... The weapon is different, the conditions are different, and the protection is different.

For someone who's portraying the legendary kingslayer, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is perhaps the worst swordsman in the entire cast. Add that to the nerf Jaime got in the TV series, and the loss of his hand is not much of a loss - he was never that good anyway.

I know it's not realistic at all, but I have to say, they did a good job with the choreography when it comes to Arthur quickly changing his situation from being entirely surrounded to making sure all of his opponents were in front of him, singling one out, and then returning to the position where he's not blindsided, that's gotta be a good thing, right?. Bad footwork as you say aside, that has to be the smartest move in that (very unrealistic) situation. As an aside, you're given multiple descriptions from multiple characters throughout the books that Ser Arthur Dayne is absolute beast. You don't get that in the show. Maybe someone mentions him off the cuff once or twice, but it's nowhere near the build up he gets in the books. You get this small segment of one episode to tell the audience that this guy is an absolute monster on the battlefield, one that you cannot hope to beat one-one-one, no matter who you are. He is literally a living legend in his time, and the choreographer had to somehow put that across in such a short span of time. When 99.9% of your audience has no concept of real swordplay and, were they to watch a HEMA duel, would be absolutely stunned by the speed and how suddenly the combatants could (without protection) take a blow that could hinder them, disable a hand, or outright mortally wound them, it just does not make for good television. These duels aren't drawn out for entertainment. They're competitive fights, with blunted swords and protection. If you put that into a realistic setting, where it's not about scoring points but about life or death, potentially from a single blow, these things would be over in moments. I love this sort of content and the way it breaks down the silliness of fictional combat vs real life or death situations, but when the breakdown fails to acknowledge how it would be far less entertaining and cinematic to watch a realistic fight in this context, it always makes me feel kinda bad for the choreographers who had to take so many things into account when making these entertaining scenes come alive.

I dont get the whole "he's faster and can afford to do silly moves" talking point when in gameplay it's a complete disadvantage. Ciri doesnt do this stuff and she kicks ass way harder because of it. If the monsters are as fast as him, this is just dangling keys in front of their face. That all being said, I could easily see it working as standard attacks being very direct and practical while the heavies are big spins, wider arcs, more damage, carry momentum instead of snapping from action to action.

@kenzo77189 ай бұрын
Cool analysis :) Although I always wonder..sure you can comfortably sit back in your chair and look at 2 or more dudes fighting, comment on the fight according to the strict rules of the game and know very well how to react in theory. But I always wonder, in this case, if a big armored dude is swinging 2 swords at you with the intent to fuck you up real bad..would you still be able to think that quickly about your next split second move? Seriously asking.
