Hey dude, I just came back from first real HEMA practice with a club and I want to say, thanks for introducing a new addiction into my life. Haha. Even my wife is into it. She's actually like light years ahead of me because she's a solid boxer already, but anyway thanks for the inspiration. Of all the youtube's I follow, who are HEMA related, you make it seem the most "get into-able" if you know what I mean and are probably the most responsible for me taking the plunge, so thanks again. I always look forward to your new videos, and keep up the awesome work!

Mate that's awesome... to think that my videos acted as even a slight incentive to get someone involved in HEMA is incredible, It's the exact reason I started making them in the first place. Seriously thanks so much for saying that, and for supporting the channel. :D Congrats on having a wife who's into HEMA, you'll never be short of a training partner. I tried but mine's not having any of it. If I ever come out to Texas you better teach me how to shoot one of those guns I see on your channel. XD

Haha, yea, she's pretty chill. I'll never be short of a training partner who can kick my ass. She's been boxing for years so the footwork is already natural for her, whereas I'm like "wait do what now?" Yea, dude! Come down to Texas! Haha. I'm originally from California so don't expect a real Texan, but I do live here now. Your channel is awesome! Best mix of good editing, good content, and an attractive male lead. Lol

When he hit matpat's sword saying "all you need to do is keep the sword from hitting you", that was probably the biggest sign that he doesn't know what he's doing. I mean, if I was matpat holding the sword, as soon as he tapped that thing and I see my sword pretty much flinged away, I'd be calling bs. I feel like matpat MUST have had a feeling they were dummies and was just being nice for camera. There's just no way.

Gary Kershner www.therenlist.com Note the 1 n- two ns takes you to a car website. Or just google “renaissance fair” and the name of your state/ country. Or ask your nearest SCA or reenactor group what sort of medieval events are nearby. (sca.org for a good medieval enthusiast organization that runs great events) Adrien empire was the other big one out west I think (usa) Also check facebook for groups and events. Most states have at least one renfair but the SCA events are usually waaay better because its about learning and awesome people rather than making money. Hope this helps.

Gametheory always fucks it up when they talk about weapons. We're talking about a guy who is so clueless that he was genuinely shocked to learn an arrow to the knee could end the career of an adventurer. The preview was so aweful there was no way I'd pay for the full version. It's pure Dunning-Kruger effect, he's so clueless he's unaware just how much he doesn't know and also lacks the skills to find a credible expert to help him.

KnightSquire You're impressed by Mat's work on videos like the leap of faith, but I'm honestly not sure if his research there is correct, either. I would bet that the only reason most people see nothing wrong with it is because most people don't understand how the leap of faith works -- Mat included; so, when Mat talks about all the fancy formulas we believe him, because we've never seen them and we don't know what's actually impressive and what's not. We are to the leap of faith video as anyone else is to the Science of Sword Fighting video. But hey, that's JUST A THEORY... probably a better theory than anything Mat has come up with.

The twist, however, is at the end he faces off against a proficient HEMA practitioner, and we get to see Brian Danner get stomped in a sword fight time, after time, after time again.

It looks to me like what they're attempting to do at 5:32 (and failing quite miserably I might ad) is the Krumphau from the German school of longsword fencing. (Specifically I think it's Meyer but I could be wrong about that)
@misterpayah7723
@misterpayah7723 3 жыл бұрын
Yes I see it now. Kind of. And failing miserably indeed, because the way they are holding it vertically down, it's so weak it's useless as a parry. I think the opponent can practically smack the sword out of your hand with a swing.

This video, which I have not watched, since I will never watch another matpat video again, is probably a commercial paid by ubisoft for "For Honour" or some shit like that. My first and last pre-order was "Empire Total War..." But after a while, it got better. No more campaign crashing bugs, actual nice strategic gameplay with all the various tech trees. But I also paid 20$ on top of a regular copy just to get the "special units" like Roger's Rangers and others. Talking about special units, a few nights ago some of Bulkely's Regiment tried to storm my Amsterdam fortress. They were ripped apart by my Armed Civilians!

about the capture the flag thing Im a part of an IMCF group called the Iron Hart Vanguard and I had an interesting idea for a capture the flag game for an IMCF/HEMA group (it would probably fit better with HEMA RULES) where essentially it was just a skirmish(3v3 or 5v5) but one teams goal is to capture the flag or the "castle" or whatever and it would be actual sword fighting just giving more structure and tactics to the fight and gives it a bit more context, what do you think?

Don't bring ballet into this. Ballet was invented to practice footwork for the small sword. i.e. it has a practical use in swordsmanship (at least historically), but much like olympic fencing, once it was separated from its original purpose it went adrift and the objective became distorted so that people trained for higher and more elaborate jumps rather than simply trying to move more efficiently.
@hubertheftig

@ktoth29
@ktoth29 8 жыл бұрын
actually, spinning itself probably has a very good purpose in swordsmanship, if not to present ones back to the opponent you are fighting, but to avoid presenting ones back to a second opponent who is attempting to flank you. As always the fault lies not with the technique but the choreographer who is undermining the fundamental technique to make something that looks cool or dramatic or whatever.

I can only take so much bullshit, I am struggling to pay that 440 HUF for the video and release a shitstorm over this guy or just ignore it. I really would like to duel with the guy who trained them to use stunt moves, at least that would prove something.

Well, we do need to remember that the guy, self proclaimed "Sword Master" (he must had usurp that name) is in fact a STUNT choreographer. You know, people who make moves designed to be more on the "rule of cool" side? NOT REALISTIC. It's obvious that MatPatt just had to promote the "realistic" combat in For Honor, which the only thing good for it is that it shows the "Death Blow". Other than that, For Honor has a fictional, but alas, cool looking combat. I'm all into realistic sword arts, like many, but I also acknowledge when a fight, for silly as it is, in realistic standards, can be fun to watch. THAT'S THE DIRECTORS GOAL. To make a fight visually interesting. The guy (Matt) just had to do his job. Promote the game. He earns money from that. Thats life people. Sometimes you have to get low to work. And it's pretty much off topic to criticize his theories or himself for this. The real fault is calling the video "Science of Sword fighting!" It would have been less sinful to just called it "The combat in For Honor". I'm not a fanboy but just clarifying that it's not entirely his fault. Why would the makers of For Honor allowed him to show real sword combat? Even if it has it's cool moments, really, it's not that spectacular. Video Games need to be wild, crazy, silly, absurd. FUN. Otherwise... It's just pointless. You play games to scape real life, for fucks sake, not to imitate it.
