the $10 one would have been better if the bats were gone... the city skyline should have been bigger/taller and the moon could have been a bit higher. putting the moon there makes me feel like this designer didnt have a full moon... the font must be stronger and in the same style/type as the 5. and red like the sky. i would love a more looming menacing cityscape... i like the $35 one, just wish the cabin looked less tech and more cabin in the woods type of thing. that's also one which has your browns nicely added. $100 is the wrong way around... it looks like the kids are coming from the forest to the city - not city kids going to the forest... $200 is just sad. i suppose the triangle should be a tent, but from just looking at it - it looks like a triangle on a green circuit board. He should have used different textures for each layer to help distinguish each function and not just plop a few lines over the top of some teal... $300 i dont see the tech bits first... they come through as maybe a guy living in the woods who doesnt like city life... there isnt enough of a tech vs nature for me there... and the big 5 looks like it might be book five where the guy in the wood chops off another head in the series of stories... the five doesnt look like its part of the title...

I understand the Ai hate of all the other comments but my guess is and please correct me someone - that no one of the people who say something negative about the Ai genereated images ever!!! created an Ai cover for a book or something similar themselves and have no idea how much work and knowledges goes into making a good prompt and putting everything together. And also choosing the right results.

D was priced this way likely because of the currency exchange. It also has a lot of tangents that regular artists would notice and change, lots of inconsistent line and shape which suggest that its might be AI.

AI detectors are mostly a farce. It’s very hard for an automated system to reliably detect state of the art AI because, if they could, they could be used to fine tune such AI and improve it. Thing is, almost by definition, it’s very hard to improve state of the art AI.

Honestly, they mostly felt Ai generated and "photo"bashed at best. C lacks a good font (it's so hard, I don't blame them) and E has the fonts I find easiest to read. If you enjoy humour, I think A might be too sterile. Maybe you can add a (font) smiley along the blue line on the side. I don't know. P.S.: your friend with the crystal orb on his table has to make sure it doesn't sit in the sun, they can cause fires if they do.

This is a really fun experiment! My brutal reaction as a professional illustrator (sorry fiverr artists): A: Definitely the best in terms of layout, color palette and design B: Obviously AI. Follow the lights of the side of the buildings as they defy perspective. Overall not a bad composition aside from the tangent with the "I" in "CABIN" C: It bothers me how much they enjoyed this image. The skyline is WAAAY out of proportion and perspective. Is no one else bothered by the cabin windows being uneven?? Chimney above the porch, WHAT? Also not a graphic designer but I agree the font is ugly. D: The scale of the BG character is WAY OFF, that person would be HUGE. The sloppiness of the stairs (in a natural environment??) also annoys me E: The silhouette of the cityscape is arbitrary generic "sci-fi" and a bit bland in my opinion

B is the only cover that would actually make me wanna pick up the book at read it. I can't stand minimalistic covers that make me need to use my imagination just to try and figure out what the damn story is about. With B, you immediately know there's some crazy futuristic tech and it involves a group of youngsters and exploration. For 100 bucks it's amazing!

Cover D is easily my favorite. I'd love to see it with a few more color choices as well. I found it strange that one of your colleagues kept referring to something that's orange and bright green as being "dull." Cover A looks professional, but to me it just looks like all the other covers of books I've already seen before, and it would blend right in to the rest of the shelf.

as an illustrator, I must cry this into the wind: some artists just have simplistic styles but that doesn't mean it's worth less or indicates lesser skill! So even though E wasn't my personal fav, I gotta put some respect on it. Honestly tho, I liked D the best

I think in terms of quality, A definitely looks the best. But I do think it leans to more of an “adult” look. When I was younger and read YA sci-fi, the D cover would have appealed to me the most. I think it really comes down to the age range you are seeking out. Both covers are striking in their own way!

A $300 and D $35 are the only ones I’d select out of these. But I think that both are much AI generated at least a few elements. D has extremely symmetrical design (the two trees of same size, the two kids of same size, the triangle cabin being symmetrical) and if it were up to me I would make them all asymmetrical and use Big Medium Small rule and also slightly pull the shapes to a slant to create a jarring or uneasy feeling because of the slight horror elements but nothing so in the face like the red cover. Also i love the muted blacks in this, it gives retro vibes but may not be suitable for the story, so Id make my blacks more contrasting but still leave it a bit faded. I would focus on the title to pop out using colours and bolder text too. cover A is very good but i feel like the sci-fi border is just too out of the place in the cover, it sticks out like it was just stuck in there too say “get look it’s sci fi.” I like the cover a lot but it just looks like soldering just churned out from a big corporation. As a reader I’m more likely to pick up D than any of these covers and A would be my second choice.

As a ya librarian, A and B are the only ones that look like ‘real’ covers. I have plenty of dystopias that look like B in my library - that may be why it’s reading as AI generated. A comes in second because the title is harder to read - cabin 5 or 5 cabin? That can put readers off.

I was super surprised that the $35 one was so cheap! I definitely prefer the $300 cover for ONE reason- the cabin in the $35 one looks a bit too sci-fi when the camp is supposed to be a detox camp! I would expect it to look more like a regular log cabin. I know, a silly detail, but I just love how sinister and intriguing the $300 cover is while also really tying that clash between tech and the woods together nicely. You might have to change the A in the logo; I've heard Adobe doesn't like people using that kind of A, but it probably wouldn't be an issue. Also, the colors not being as dark in the $35 logo is probably an easy edit and might make it pop more; either way those two covers are definitely better than all the rest.

From how you described the plot I feel like all of the covers are missing something personally. I would absolutely not use B or D because B is100% AI generated and I have a strong suspicion that D is as well. D also seems to go against the premise of the story, why are the children going towards a super high-tech tent if they're getting away from technology? C & E both feel a bit amateurish, (E stands out especially because I recognize the font used as one I used on a college graphic design assignment). That leaves A which I do think is the best out of all of them, but it still feels a bit generic imo. And this might just be my personal opinion but the glowing blue parts on A just feel a little tacky to me, but they do suggest sci-fi, so maybe thats what you want if you want easy readability.

Okay to each their own ofc, but I really love that red slanted landscape cover, like a lot actually 😆I know it's not in the final running but something about it is just so insanely cool and pulls me in, I think if you took the bats off and replaced that space with something better suited to the story it coulda been a winner fs

E doesn’t surprise me. Im a designer too and I’d say the biggest misconception is that simple, minimalist designs look like less work, therefore are cheap, but the concept and purposefull merging of different meanings in less shapes is the highest creativity you can get. This is something AI is still lacking, or will keep being a human specialty.

"Cabin 5" reads like the fifth book in a series, "Cabin Five" or "The Cabin Five" as a title would remedy this imo. It would mean my favorite cover A would no longer work though so R.I.P. to it Cover E would be amazing with another pass: Get rid of the back city layer and shift everything up so the cabin is more visible, make the cabin a solid color or give it wood log type stripes to lift it off the tree layer (maybe also make the cabin or it's windows a dim yellow?), and finally change the circuit design on the trees (maybe use browns, dark beiges, and blacks in addition to the green to represent transistors, capacitors, and such on a green circuit board so it's less of a schematic and more like an actual circuit board which may read clearer to the viewer) My 3rd favorite is sadly cover B, as a kid I probably would've picked it up. Idk how much it'd cost to get an actual artist to make a realistic painting like that but probably a lot

I think A looks the best, as an artist and armature graphics designer, the choices of color is striking. Integrating the 5 into the actual cover, rather than just having the put with “Cabin” makes balance a lot better. The font and the outer details is simplistic but conveys a more minimal sci-fi aspect. Also the Cabin being centered is a lot more professional looking. While I know you like D, it seems very AI generated to me, the AI detection systems are very flawed. In writing your work may be flagged as AI, mine definitely has and it’s why my school banned AI detection software. At the very least, D looks very generic, more like a corporation art style. It’s stereotypical. A is different to me, I have seen so many books like D in the YA section before. A is striking in the sense that it’s different and since it’s unique, will definitely draw potential readers.

I'm not your age demographic, but I lean toward the $35 choice, not because of the price, but because of how easy to understand it is from a glance. It's a cover that will thumbnail well on Amazon, while the other choice will just be a great big jumble. For what it's worth, I was NOT surprised that I got way more right than your panel did. I WAS surprised at two things: a) how much your panel members hem-hawed when you led them with your own comments, not seeming to trust their own judgment; and b) how much everyone, your panel and the comments here included, denigrated the AI work. I get it; I have a few graphic artist friends who launch into your version of Tongues in order to cast out the evil whenever I mention AI in their presence, but I've also used it and studied it -- I'm my state's lead on the topic of AI in education -- and I find it pretty true that AI merely manages to speed up the worker's natural abilities -- a great designer can do great designs faster, while a crappy designer can make much stinkier crap in half the time. But the fact that more people need to understand is that a crappy designer is NEVER going to turn out great work, whether they use AI or not.
