If one is not going to tournaments and just enjoys 'old Modern' make a 'battle box' out of it. For example I built some obsolete decks that I still found fun, decks that wouldn't stand up in today's meta such as: 1. Soul Sisters 2. Abzan Evolution 3. Mono-white Death & Taxes 4. Bant Four-Swords 5. Bant Knightfall and also have mono-blue Merfolk, Boros Burn and a Black-Green Squirrels deck based on something I built in Arena that does surprisingly well. These decks let me play some 1v1 games when there's not enough lads for EDH or we just want a change. That these decks are frozen makes it so I don't have any pressure to upgrade them, more so as they're all supposed to be relatively balanced against each other, yet they were all (except Squirrels) based on some high REL-tournament deck I found on MTGTop8. Some of them are more loosely based than others and I upgraded a few that were really lackluster initially. Soul Sisters, for example, was upgraded by simply swapping out Ajani's Pridemate for Voice of the Blessed and Honor of the Pure for Righteous Valkyrie. So keep your old Modern decks, with a bit of luck you'll have friends that kept theirs as well. Just agree on a 'no arms race' policy.

i would buy off of local lgs but they literally never have any of the cards im looking for. none of the swords are ever in stock. none of the combo pieces regardless of rarity are ever in stock. this is multiple lgs stores in my area that are like this.

reprint all the cards that are like a thousand dollars and maybe the other formats would stand a chance😂

completely disagree. The magic community must embrace grassroots formats if we want to make the overall game better. Just because pre-modern doesn't have the backing of WotC doesn't mean that it can't be competitive. No company owns chess or poker, yet competitive players, formats and rulesets exist for those games. If the competitive modern community wants to save their format, they need to start biting the hand that feeds and agree to not play with certain cards. Set up a player committee separate from WotC to police the format. Ban cards that overly warp the format and ban the Horizons sets. Embrace proxies and permit them to be played at tournaments. We cannot compel WotC to change their behavior by pleading and begging on twitter, especially since we keep rewarding them for what they are doing by buying their product.

The issue isn't commander...the issue is standard is free on arena and modern is actually so unhealthy many people quit.

Its bad game design to ban cards. The good game dsign solution is to just print counter cards for the meta ones. Make legendary artifact hose card for the one ring, and then make an anti frog card

The One Ring just needs to go. The fact it can go in any deck while Psychic Frog only works in dimir means it much less likely that Psychic Frog would be as dominating as The One Ring. Plus removing that allows the barrier of entry from a minimum $400 to buy a deck to a much lower number

Play a different deck.... This guy is wanting to play solitair. Why should the other people let the combo happen? Also, why are they complaining that their combo failed and someone else worked. Mtg is the ultimate rock paper scissors and no one deck is unstoppable. I cycle through 3 different deck - a nekusat wheel deck - a second dr/leela group hug deck - a combo goblin deck If I was to just play with the combo deck everyone would get tired of the same thing being done. The more its played the more people would kill/remove parts of the combo. The non combo decks also have some combos, but thats not the aim of them - they are a "nice if it happens" situation. Now! There are times when the outcome is obvious, someone else is able to wipe everyone out in a turn or two and there isnt any obvious options. Ive asked everyone if we want to fastforward "does any one has an out or should we all move onto the next game?" (I never say this if im ahead). Someone could top deck a board wipe but thats not the point - the question is more along the lines of "did everyone have fun and is happy to end the game".

We need a community format that basically plays like Modern, but all Modern exlusive Sets (e.g. MH1-3 and LotR) aren't allowed. Call it "Better Modern" or smth idk lmao

As long as everybody gets to play and not lose to a turn 4 (or earlier) infinite/insta-win combos then i do not really care what the meta is.

I've had people in cEDH Tournament Tables go on their phone to play tiktoks or get music on their headsets and when someone pops off they go: "wait, what's going on? Oh... I can stop that from the beginning. I'll stop it." And then it proceeds to Judges being called and the game being stalled even more. Honestly, pretty tiring.

Can't frog use a Tale's End effect to counter the trigger or just counter the spell? Personally, I feel that nothing should be banned in general (for non tournaments) since you can rule 0 things. But as for other formats certain things can be banned after a lot of consideration. The One Ring is strong, but is it ban-able? There are ways to stop it and it's not a guaranteed victory nor does it hinder the progress of the game. However, being in what 60% of decks might be problematic.

Honestly, I played alchemy back when LOTR was legal. On principal, I didn't play the one ring, and every game with that deck where my opponent had a one ring, I only won if I could answer the one ring. I had to run blue and heavy discard in a deck that was already a 4 color pile excluding blue. Every other deck I played, if I couldn't answer the one ring, I couldn't play the game. It's a problem wherever it fits, and otherwise warps even matchups, regardless of deck

Been playing Modern since it became a thing. No, there wasn't always a "best deck in the meta". That's a short sighted view. There were always powerful decks, but the power creep had made the format solvable. Shame. Was fun while it lasted.

I got really lucky with the one ring and pulled three, one for draft and two from some packs i bought. probably cost me 60$ for all 3.
