Need an antenna that is correct for air band receive. 70/440 antenna is not going to do it. Come on Ham guys, you know this right?

You can use CHIRP. It is free and is very easy to use.

Unfortunately, the 17 ProMax does not do airband! The Pro GPS does. A lot of confusion and misleading advertising and listings.

I'm trying to figure out what I just received. The sticker inside says UV-17 Pro-Max. I do Ham but I was mostly wanting Air band receive with this one.

Thank you, there are so many variants, and quality varies a lot on different versions …. I have personally stopped picking up these as they can disappoint more than they can please!

Over the 2024 holidays I picked up a UV17R for $17 from Amazon. Mine did NOT come with a USBC port for charging. While programming by hand is kinda a PITA CHIRP can program it, just use the UV17Pro profile. :) However while looking at KZbin videos on the programming I ran across one that made use of a TinySA spectrum analyzer to measure the output and IT WAS VERY BAD! 1st harmonic on 2m was -19DB from the fundamental! While I like the 'feel' of the radio AND other batteries can be bought that have USBC port on the back, speaker+mic/programming port is standard with many other radios IMHO this radio should NOT be used for transmitting without additional filtering. Mine copy is going in the trash.

You don’t need a ham unless you plan on broadcasting in ham. If you broadcast in gmrs you need that license. Gmrs license is just that no testing necessary. 35 dollars for gmrs. Not sure the ham fees but there’s a test involved. Honestly, grms shares frs and if you use those channels it’s like talking on a walkie talkie.

Not that I know of! I tried to receive CB , but did not pick up anything! CB is AM band and I have not been able to get the 27 hundreds in AM reception.

Technically, with custom firmware, yes, but I would NOT buy it for CB. Also, transmitting on the frequencies unlocked via custom firmware results in a really-really weak signal and HORRIBLE spurious emissions.

Only buy the AR-5RM it’s fully unlocked. All other 5RM’s are 👎🏼.

AR-5RM is def good radio. Used CHIRP to copy paste from Tid H3. Works great.

Everyone sems to go nuts for the number of features a radio has. Its meant to talking and hearing others. Keep it simple. As far as using this for other bands.... the antenna is tuned for one.

Some features are nice to have, some too much! As for the antenna, it can be changed for a properly tuned to the band you will operate!

Still bummed they removed the 'one click' frequency/channel cloning on this H8.... Something that differentiates it from the H3. Perhaps in a firmware update like the wattage TX/RX measurement.

I see on another video the radio showing channel NAMES. I can do Channel mode, frequency mode and thats it. Any help appreciated.

Hi. If you programming with CHIRP, you can enter names for your channels, then go to menu 11, where you can select to show frequency OR channel OR name. Hope this helps!

LIKE my 2 pack for $22. Cannot be programed w/o software, computer, & a programming cable. Does not have a channel lock. It's narrow band, not wide. PERFECT for simple uses: Road trips w/ friends, kids at camp, warehouse... At that price no tears if lost, stolen or destroyed.

I picked up two of baefung uv-5rm radios off amazon canada for 157.14 so far i have the frs gmrs murs frequencies programed into it manually and am ready to program the local frequencies into it including the ham repeaters using a tidradio bluetooth programer once my order comes in and plan on cloning the radios using a cloning cable so i can lend a friend of mine one for security so far im pretty impressed with the radios and plan on ordering extra 2500 mah batteries longer antennas then I will be set I will do a review one day here on KZbin and a how to series on programming the radios hope you all enjoy your baefung radios no matter the series you buy
