The reason you randomly died while running alongside cliffs and clutter objects is because you have the framerate limiter turned off, its also why the HUD flashes like a strobe light. Rockstar North must have just been moaned at to get 60fps for the PC release and didn't care how it broke the game's physics. Not only that but if you turn off the "trails" which applys a layer of motion blur is also disables a shitload of particle effects... GTA III is meant to be played at a blurry, smudged, 30fps.
