I have an update on this, search for 'dstn polarizer vogons' since the thread I posted in shows as the top result. I took pictures of both the monochrome and the colour tests :) So far it appears that polypropylene or maybe cellullose acetate at 25 micron thickness is the key element, the adhesive makes no difference. On my T2400CS test laptop with the tape + polariser setup, I've got part of the polariser removable an area of the tape removed so that I can test other materials quickly, currently researching what to get - I need to determine whether it's the material thickness or the material itself that's making the difference here, since different tapes seem to give better/worse colour accuracy & black levels

That film compensation layer is I think what's actually breaking down, which is why vinegar syndrome seems more common on passive displays. I've just found out that cheap cellulose / sticky tape is able to take the place of the compensation layer. (try a few out, cheap & low tack works best) Really is nice to see a 'paper white' monochrome displaying proper black and white again. Colour looks good too on a VGA colour STN display I just fixed by putting tape onto the LCD and then a standard polariser on top. Though it has lines where there are gaps between the separate tape lines :) Have you found any good source for fstn polarising film?

@@voodler can you elaborate on cellulose sticky tape because I don't know what that means
@voodler
@voodler Күн бұрын
@@THEtechknight Well, looks like the cellulose part isn't too important. Clear packing tape that's 2" wide or greater laid in strips on the glass and beneath the front linear polarizer. The Kite brand tape I used is apparently most likely polypropylene. The best result I got is with some 'club' brand tape but I can't find information on it or its material yet. According to the pictures I took, the tape goes at a 20 degree angle from the upper line of the screen as 0 degrees. Apparently that was the same for both the colour and monochrome tests. My colour display uses a 45 degree polarisation which I determined using a camera lens's polarizing filter which had a dot at the top to signify 0 degrees. The monochrome's angle doesn't count since that was using a different rear polariser from stock (since both sides were bad on that one and now it's just parts and gets used for testing).

IDEA 1: Randomly curious as to whether this works with the Toshiba 1950CT Archive floppies for DOS, Windows, Diagnostics, inverting display, other Toshiba utilities, etc. IDEA 2: can you demonstrate this working with SvarDOS? Bonus points if you can get an ethernet card in there; and demonstrate SvarDOS's package manager. IDEA 3: Max out RAM, get a sound card in there, get an mSATA to IDE adapter... overkill? Maybe. But that built-in TRIM-like support tho (garbage collection) for long-term durability. Set once and forget forever.

@THEtecknight Thanks for doing the sound testing on the Radius Accelerator at 31:22. I've always been curious if that card was like my Levco (SuperMac) SpeedCard, and sure enough it is. Seems like a lot of SE accelerators back in the day had that audio glitching problem. So if Zane can get that issue squared away in WarpSE, it surely will be THE accelerator to have for any Mac SE.

Service sucks, techs suck, the INDIAN tech support sucks their apps suck everything sucks nothing works no can fix it and afters hours on the phone and it still doesn’t work they go into their script and ask if I want mobile service to save 15$ . Thank god streaming will become the norm and cable will be dead and buried hopefully all the execs lose everything including their pensions and 401ks.

Thanks for the video. Amiga nerd here so a brother in M68k… and I have been considering obtaining an “old world” or PPC Mac to play with. I looked up this accelerator… why did they stick with the 68000 and only 25MHz and not go with a 68040 or even better a 68060 at 50MHz (or better?)? I also understand it only has 4MB RAM, but the 68000 can use a max of 16MB (2GB for the 68040). With the 68040 you also get FPU and independent MMU. It just seems this isn’t much of an accelerator especially when compared to the Terrible Fire and especially compared to the PiStorm.
@ukmk3supra
@ukmk3supra 16 күн бұрын
Because going that far it'd be pointless. These are designed for machines that have no video acceleration, a single 1-bit 512x342 display. There's no capability to 'add' colour on the SE. Nothing really uses the FPU in these machines - by the time software was coming out that used the FPU, they were also apps that required colour. There is no 68060 support in the Macintosh ROM anywhere - you'd have to totally re-write them for minimal performance gains. The BBU chip on the SE logic board only allows for 4MB of addressable RAM as it's just an integration of the previous PAL16 logic from the Macintosh Plus from 1986, which differed very little from the original 1984 Macintosh. The 68000 may have 16MB addressable space, but when this was released in 1987, having 4MB of ram was considered nuts and would have cost almost half of the entire machine. The rest of the address space is mapped to ROM, system overlay, expansion slots etc. Also - cost. A 68HC00020 costs a lot less than an 030 or an 040. When you butt up against the rest of the system restrictions, putting in anything more than an 020 is throwing money away.
@bakkus82
@bakkus82 15 күн бұрын
Neither the TerribleFire or the PiStorm are even remotely compatible with the Macintosh SE, so I don't understand how those are valid comparisons.
@garrettsworkshop
@garrettsworkshop 14 күн бұрын
I mean, we had not done an accelerator before so we figured we should start off simply. Our goal was a 3.5x speedup and we broke 4x in some tests so we're happy. It makes the SE much more tolerable to use. Our target price for this accelerator is $150 and in the future after the first batch of 250ish are made and sold we would like to update the design and reduce cost even more. 68030 and FPU would take up a significant part of the budget and 68060 would be totally out of the price range. I think the full '060 with FPU goes for hundreds of dollars on eBay. Even 68040s are kinda rare, but we were able to acquire about 250 of these MC68HC000s with good provenance (i.e. no fake "remanufactured" chips) for a good price. Next we will do an SE/30 accelerator which will obviously require an '030 but first things first.

@@bakkus82 They aren't, at all, but the number one priority of the Amiga nerd is being able to claim superiority because they have the biggest and baddest accelerator (bonus points if it basically just replaces the entire system through the CPU). Dude, you're still using a 68000? That's poverty spec, you should be digging through Motorola VME scrap in hopes of finding 060s for less than $500 a chip. Lame! CPU type and speed is everything!

Thank you for making this video, it was very helpful in my repair of a Toshiba XM-3301BC drive. I had to replace every single capacitor and things like the 1uF, 10uF and bipolar caps I've just used ceramic capacitors instead of electrolytics and it's working now. It wasn't working initially which was down to an already used 4v 220uF capacitor that had ESR as bad as the cap it replaced. And I forgot to replace the big 10v 330uF radial capacitor thinking "well it's not an SMD cap it should be fine". But it wasn't fine and that 330uF cap reeked of fish on removal. I might put something on the caps wiki about it since after 30 years I think every surviving Toshiba caddy drive will need a recap now. Even after that it would only work for reading CDs when heated up with a hairdryer. It was doing the same thing you were talking about where the speed wouldn't lock in correctly even though the laser was doing its job and focusing OK. Giving the main PCB a wash in the ultrasonic cleaner for maybe close to an hour total in 5 minute bursts made all the difference. Lots of fishy smell as I brushed around the ICs but it eventually cleaned up, at the cost of all the soldermask labels which oddly fell off like decals for models that are applied with water. Now the drive plays a CD right away and with the cover on is nice and quiet. I didn't touch any of the adjustments for the laser and don't intend to, it's working well at reading pressed CDs so far and for a 1992 drive that's what I wanted 🙂
