Hi - this is the 4 cylinder 1800 cc standard B engine! There are two valves per cylinder.

I just give a tug on the fan belt and stop when the valve i am watching is fully down. Quick and easy. Set mine to 13 cold, at 15 cold I find they still clatter a bit. Oh and they will slowly change a bit with use ! It can drive you mad but then you have to be a bit mad to run one of these.

Great instructional vid. I would recommend though you wear disposable rubber gloves for oil changes, as used engine oil is carcinogenic.

Yikes! Probably PFAS in there. Good call and thanks!

there IS reason that only some addled Brit would elect to Fit an O ring as a semi useless "seal' imitation.

The thing about the MGB. It may not be that powerful, but they feel great on the road. They look great and they sound better than nearly all other cars . How they managed to make them sound that good with that lovely deep growl between 2,000 and 3,000 reve is amazing. No wonder they sold 500,000

I might be wrong but it looked like you forgot to zero out the meter after cylinder 3 - which s why 3 and 4 were identical. Still, I found the video very helpful since I’m about to try this for the first time using the exact same tester. Thanks.
@mcnamarasgarageАй бұрын
Good catch. Looks like it was down a bit and then climbed. I've since put a new head on the B and it is ripping around pretty good.
@georgearber2452Ай бұрын
I thought that the throttle should be fully open when doing the test.
@mcnamarasgarageАй бұрын
You can, but really you are just looking for consistency across all 4.
@shawnfisher62142 ай бұрын
What about using both types?
@mcnamarasgarageАй бұрын
you can do that! But, I heard with the original iron valve guides, the o-ring design might actually allow a little oil to "lube" the guide.

What made you decided on new valves. Was it burning oil ?
@mcnamarasgarage3 ай бұрын
This was a used head I was going to use, but I found the valve guides were very worn…lots of play with the valves in the guides. Bought the head on eBay and was told it had only been run in the driveway after a rebuild…yeah right

Thank you so much for posting the video. The guys that work on these OD units try to get your 401K when they work on them for you.😅

I thought all US spec cars had oil coolers, especially late model.

nope, I think it was officially dropped with the '77-80 redesign of the engine compartment with the radiator moving forward, perhaps?

That's a really clever fix that even looks factory. Well done. I need to replace mine too, but I blanched at the idea of removing the vent wing stalk from the door. I may actually rig up a solution like your PO had lol

Naval jelly is, indeed, terrifically useful. If you let phosphoric acid sit on your skin long enough it will soak into your tissues and kill the cells deeper in your skin & muscles without you knowing it at the time. Symptoms are, hours later, an ache in your fingers like you slammed them in a door. If you're lucky, you get to the emergency room soon enough and they fit you with rubber gloves with an acid neutralizer that soaks your hands & fingers all night, along with direct needle injections into the meaty parts of your fingers every hour. Then you get to keep your fingers. If you are not lucky or wait too long, you don't pay the hospital an arm & a leg, but they do get to keep your fingers as a tip. Wear PPE when handling acids such as this. I'll let someone else harp on the wire wheel fun & games. On the upside, no running angle grinders were juggled in this video.

my 75 mgb overdrive was inoperable for 20 yrs, not willing to spend $600 to have someone look at. i pulled the inspection cover off and found metal shavings wedged the oil pump piston in the off position. i removed, sprayed 4 cans of brake cleaner, lots of compressed air and 4 dollars of o-rings and viola...started to work. been good ever since.

Nice MGB. I have both the 68 and 71 MGBs. I bought the British Victoria rear leaf springs for my 68. They were way too stiff and the car was way in the air with no bounce. I ended up finding a used pair on Ebay.

nope, not in the US. By '77 it was a single Zenith carb. I put a set of twin SUs on from a '72 (HIF style). Thanks for watching

Very interesting. I couldn’t get the OD to work on a 79 B years ago. Took it to a shop that only worked on British sports cars. They wouldn’t touch anything mechanical about the OD, and as a matter of habit would give up on any OD problem that wasn’t electrical.
