Great summary. I still shoot on an S1 with the filmmakers upgrade. They are great cameras. Looking forward to the S1H successor, that’s the only cam ill leave my S1 for. That or an S1H until the S1H ii come out. Great shots.

Thank you! Yeah I just picked up the 35 1.8 for it. For my job over the past two years (production lead on presidential campaigns) I’ve had to use Sony because we needed reliable autofocus, but I still have my S1H & just tested it with the DJI lidar AF module a couple months ago, it can autofocus through the camera without needing to add a focus motor. Going to likely sell off the Sony stuff and get the lidar kit for quicker shoots.

Yea… I’m been on Lumix since the Gh2/3/4/5. Had Sonys all the while. Sold all my Sony gear except the xlr adapter. I’m hoping the and assuming the S1H ii will have phase detect… i just love Lumix and their commitment to the user. They didn’t need to update the S1 but they did and that says a-lot about them as a company and VLOG is gorgeous.

Oh man yeah I had a GH4 back in the day, made the dumb mistake of selling it to get a canon 6D. Sony has got to be the biggest paradox in the industry, the moment I started editing some footage from the S1H it reminded me how much better it is. I’m going to make a follow up to my video on the FX3, they brought the firmware with shutter angle which is great, but there are some other things that have me ready to sell them. Video might be out in a couple weeks.

There really are some great sleeper lenses that have some incredible looks. While I haven’t used it on a project, I got a 28-135 3.5-5.6 that is so underrated, built in macro too. Need to do a whole hour long video on lenses. Or maybe a live stream convo 🤔

Thanks for the video, Brandon. Nice work too, by the way. How does the lens handle things like distortion and vignette? I have a handful of Canon lenses that I use on my Panasonic S-Series of bodies with the MC-21 adapter (EF 16-35 f/4L, EF 50mm f/1.8 STM, and the EF-S 10-18 IS STM), and while they work pretty well, the EF-S 10-18 has some pretty strong barrel distortion and vignette :( The EF 50mm is good (but it is apparently easy to make a good 50mm f/1.8 lens) and the 16-35 f/4 is surprisingly good, too.
@brandongoodyear2468
@brandongoodyear2468 22 күн бұрын
Thank you! I don’t notice a ton of distortion on the lens even at 24. Vignetting just like most lenses there’s a touch when wide open at 2.8, cleans up as soon as you stop down to 3.2. The S1H is the camera I’ve used the lens with the most & I love how the combo looks. I shot the farm day with a 1/8th black promist @ 5.6. And it looks insane.

Your video is very insightful. Currently, I have 2 GH5, 3 GH5S, 2 GH6 1 S5II cameras, mainly for multicamera productions. I am considering getting the S1H for a client’s documentary project, because they want the doc to have the potential to compete with Netflix’s docs.

I heard you say you watched a lot of content on S5iix. Now that the firmware update came out you might want to look again. (Focus and stabilizer addressed) Also the Lumix KZbin page, 3.5 years ago, addressed properly setting up AF for both photo and video in the Lumix Academy series. You aren't the first person I've heard shoots all manual on the S1H. I find it difficult to understand how they haven't been able to fix the focus on a body that's over double the price of the S5 series. It's the same sensor and stabilizer after all.
@brandongoodyear2468
@brandongoodyear2468 5 ай бұрын
Great point! I’ve been keeping my eye on the s5iix for a bit. The firmware updates have made the focus significantly more reliable. Why they haven’t been able to fix the AF on the S1H is primarily because it does’t have the on sensor phase detect system. Hoping whatever the next iteration of the s1H is will fix that.

Glad I came by this channel.. in particular this video.. to get another owner operator's opinion on the S1H.. I too bought the SIH around the same time, but never liked using my range of Canon EF mount lenses on it as the flip out screen wasn't big enough for critical continual focus.. I have the Blackmagic Video Assist 7" 12g as my onboard monitor and ANYTHING out of the HDMI port on this camera is CRIMINALLY DELAYED! I wish I knew how bad it was beforehand!! So tracking focus for me can be the hardest thing about the S1H and HDMI.. I just wish it had an SDI out. .. Then came the BH1 that did.. after my purchase, but without all the codec flavours of the S1H. The image quality IS the S1H's trump card though. The dynamic range and 'the look' IMHO is it's unique selling point. I have long since adapted the S1H to PL mount to rig my FF Cine Zooms and a full swing away mattebox.. Now a camera rig on steriods, at 13KG it is a beast.. but as a DOP of 34 years, I have used a large array of different cameras.. I still like the S1H, and have built it out to more suit my work line of high-end IVs, Docs, and Commercials.. but sadly as I mainly work in Broadcast TV News these past 12 yrs.. the camera ratherly comes out.. an ENG camera it is not, and so has been mothballed these 3 years+ Still your description in editing and gradiing was very well explained, and as a less experienced operator in this field of post work, I gained mostly in this part from your monologue...Huge thanks for that!

Beautiful car! The only thing wrong is the same thing was wrong with mine. The orange front turn signals stick out like a sore thumb in my opinion (and I'm never wrong). Cars didn't had orange lens until about '63 and they look out of place. My'36 had little rectangle orange and chrome lights like I've seen on millions of rods. I found some small round chrome lights that come to a point in the back and have orange bulbs and CLEAR lens. I masked off the front 3/8" of chrome and painted the rest gloss black. They match the head lights and you don't even notice them until the turn signal is on. I bet you can just get clear lens for the lights you have.

The front turn signals in my '38 are part of the headlights. They are installed in the bottom 1/4 of the headlights and the yellow extensions seen in the above car are not present. The car is really a resto-rod since the body is all original. I just installed a new 12V AGM battery, and plan to have my local auto mechanic change the oil since my attempt to get beneath the car (even with front ramps) has not been successful. New tires were placed not long after the car was purchased, and some modifications to the rear suspension are planned. My wife and I always get a "thumbs up" when we take the car to visit Costco or Walmart. We plan to attend the Route 66 Fun Run with the car, beginning on May 3 in Seligman, AZ, about 73 miles away from northwest of Prescott, Arizona, where we live.

Nice video, still undecided between the S1H and the S5IIx. A different topic, do you do some kind of spreading or stereoizing on your mic? Your wandering voice from left to right sounds strange somehow on headphones 😛 also I wonder about your high samplerate recording, do you convert it into a 48kHz project then? Best regards from the baltic sea 😊👍

@brandongoodyear2468 10 ай бұрын
thank you! Yeah, I haven’t gotten my hands on the s5iix, but between the autofocus and ProRes I’d be really interested in trying it out. I’ll have to listen back w/ headphones, I don’t have any stereo effect on my mic recording, it’s run straight into my FX3 too handle. the higher sample rate recordings I’ve just recently been learning about mixing them in a project. I was editing in Final Cut Pro when I initially got the S1H & it automatically handled everything relatively easy. With 96k being an exact double of 48k I believe it still works, just with finer detail and more accurate high frequency reproduction. (I’ll have to do more research on it to speak better to it)

Thanks for your replying :) I think since I don't need autofocus thaaat much, I will go with the S1H pretty soon. The image quality seems to outperform the S5IIx and the olpf next to the codecs is a great upgrade to my S5. Probably the next and soon generation will do another great step up, so the s5IIx might look worse anyway.

This is an awesome video, thank you. I recently shot a feature film with my S5, (original, I love it so much) but I ran into an issue getting a DCP made because it didn’t shoot straight 24 FPS. So I was thinking of getting an S1 H for my next project, but after watching this, I don’t think I’m gonna go that way. It’s all your fault. :-) I’ve been thinking very seriously about the S5iix as well, but I like the idea of having an optical low pass filter. I actually love my S5, and I have only seen moire show up twice in the two years that I’ve been using it, but once I saw it, I can’t un-see it, it’s always on my mind. :-) I might just get a second S5, because I actually found out that I CAN get a DCP, and so at the end of the day, I’m not really sure I should even upgrade, but we’ll see. In any case, thanks so much for sharing this, it’s the first video I’ve seen that really made me consider my options. much appreciated.

Two other important features that pushed me to this camera from the S5, which I LOVE, but I shot a feature on the S5 and because it wasn't straight 24fps, I couldn't get a DCP made. Epic fail. And second reason... Optical low pass filter. No more moiré please. ;) Great video. Thanks for sharing.
