There are so many Argentinian movies that needs restorations. I remembered getting a Jorge Porcel video in the 1980s that had a huge splice in the film transfer. Possibly 30 seconds of lost footage. I was really surprised seeing a recent TV broadcast showing a different transfer with the missing bits (yet the visual quality for the whole movie had lots of scratches on the film). I was happy seeing that a Sandro film got a restoration (I don't have it in my collection to fully compare) but seeing SOMETHING from Argentina being restored made me quite happy. This video really was informative!

Hello! Just wanted to put my 50 cents. It's nice that you have a 16mm print of Candy! Although the color correction tactic (through machine learning) is slightly off and that's what bothered me considering you used the DVD PAL version, Candy's hair is a bright yellow-green color and I discovered this as I have tapes and other material. I have a low quality creditless scanned video of the opening, and I plan on color correcting it soon to demonstrate, although it doesn't have the title screen. The color correcting methods look too yellow for my liking as seen on the supposed white parts. Also, mind if I have the digital scan to experiment with? Thanks!

Why not just use the difference mat - set the proper matte settings, add all missing pixels back to the "restorated" version and afterwards add DVO Dry Clean?
@fabiocolor3 ай бұрын
This workflow assumes that someone else has already done a "cleanup" job, leaving you with no option but to create a composite.
@t64043 ай бұрын
you can also track the perf hole and lock it, or try to use keyframes in ROI settings
@fabiocolor3 ай бұрын
Certainly, your approach should be effective provided that the previous generation didn't misalign anything in the transfer, that happens occasionally on internegatives and positive prints and it can cause some issues. So, relying on the frame borders is your best bet.
@t64043 ай бұрын
@@fabiocolor Also, there is a use-case for keeping the "Outside frame" switched on - when you have optical soundtrack and you are using DVO Flicker. What happens is that when you just stabilise in lets say using only DVO SteadyII, you are going to get a lot of light fluctuations in DVO Flicker when you do not mask the optical soundtrack.
@fabiocolor3 ай бұрын
The blanking in frame lock is indeed quite useful for most procedures. Typically, I only restore the borders for the final delivery.

Line sync issues can be mitigated using DVO line sync in Phoenix or an AviSynth script. However, from my experience, most problems with magnetic media, including line sync, are resolved before digitization through physical restoration methods.

@fabiocolor4 ай бұрын
Indeed, the same method can be applied universally; however, the challenge arises when presenting black and white colorization, which can lead to criticism from some FIAF individuals. If you possess a high-quality digitization, I could attempt colorizing a minute or so of the footage.

Did you match colors to a DVD?
@fabiocolor5 ай бұрын
Indeed, the concept is to train a compact model to extract the chroma from the reference. It's a time-intensive and GPU-heavy process, yet it's valuable. However, the simpler method of using LUT/color matching isn't half bad either.

Do you have any tips or solutions for dealing with warped film, such as heat damage; causing it to shrink in a pattern every few frames?
@fabiocolor6 ай бұрын
In Phoenix, there is a filter called DVO Warp that automatically detects and corrects vertical warping. It's a convenient 'set it and forget it' solution for most cases.

@@fabiocolor then if that’s the case could you tell me the best solution for removing splice bumps at edit points in Pheonix? Wrap the bump with cut points and apply Steady 2? I’m looking for the best solution. I originally applied Steady 2 to the entire film but the client isn’t pleased since I stabilized the picture too. They just want the spice bumps removed. Thanks
@fabiocolor6 ай бұрын
To accurately remove splices, reel footage must be scene-detected. In the Steady DVO, there's a specific setting for handling significant splicing interruptions. An alternative approach is to utilize the recently introduced DVO frame lock. If you wish, I can review your footage and provide some recommendations.
