whoever is a nature kid, and spends time around animals and bugs, knows that those little creatures are very aware. I had a pet mantis for 1 year, only i was able to pet it, when it died.. cried for 2 weeks XD I saved a black bumblebee from gettin crushed by a car, while goin home from work... it couldnt fly at all, it got hit by a van mid air. And i carried it on my hand, all the way back home, gave it sugar water, n we went to sleep together. The next morning, when i had to go to work again, i put it in a nice place, where it waited for the sun to rise a bit, in order to fly away, and bumble like it used to. While the next bumblebee that landed on its back 2 months later... i helped it, n it tried to sting me... i flicked my hand fast enough tho... that mdfk Oh and.. i just remembered... i saw a spider with a weird thorax, i put my hand near it, it jumped on it, then i ran 50 meters to show dad... he saw that it was 100 baby spiders on the thorax then i came running back, and put it in its original place... I LOVE BUGS

I think they do. But they're only able to process that conciousness to a certain extent. It's not like they're fully aware of life or it's impacts. But they must have some level of understanding and awareness.

I think we are seeing evolution in real time. And are the first generations to apply the idea of evolution and adaptation, which really hasn’t ever been widely documented. At least on the level I’m thinking.

Yeah, its aware of its surroundings obviously. It has sensory organs and reacts to the outside environment. But attributing that to consciousness that is relatable to humans or other animals is foolish. I was a tarantula keeper for several years, I had a many variety of species. Each spider was different in terms of personality, even with spiders of the same species. Some spiders would be very food hungry, others skittish, etc. To them, its a matter of their brain receiving sensory information and reacting to that information. They have no ability of higher thinking.

I personally think all intelligence and consciousness discussions are interesting. it is always very cool to see animals and bugs do things that seem very intelligent, doing things that take reason or complex thought processes. but its hard to differentiate between real instances and anthropomorphizing (applying human ideas/emotions/understanding to things that do not actually display those traits.)

definitely has. i've saved a butterfly from drowning once. after it dried out it flew and landed on my shoulder and stayed there for like an hour(i was moving around and all) almost as if it expressed its gratitude these animals are way more conscious than we give them credit for

Maybe have a look into some air plants. They don’t have to be rooted in the ground to survive and can handle a more arid environment!

The fact that insects have conscious subjective experiences is not currently considered controversial in neuroscience.

I personally believe some insects do and some insects don't, the fly that keeps beating his head against my window clearly isn't, but the jumping spider in the corner of my room not only can I say from my own experience does, but it's even scientifically proven that their brains are able to process multiple things at a time. It's insane and made me lose my arachnaphobia.

Everything that is alive has consciousness. Otherwise none of the things that humans, insects, mammals,..., do, would work

I honestly think that all life has consciousness. Even microorganisms. I think that when you watch life forms you see intentional decisions and awareness, and that most people just attempt to explain it away as instinct. I watched an amoeba being eaten by a stentor once, and that amoeba was running for it's life, trying to break through the cell wall. There was fear, there was an awareness of imminent death. I think it's the arrogance and hubris of man that leads so many to assume that there's some kind of cut off point for consciousness. Although if I'm being fair, it's much easier to recognise that humans have consciousness than any other life form because we can directly communicate with one and other. And with mammals and other forms of "higher" life, we can establish communication on some level. But here's the thing, as I've seen other people mention in the comments, every single time we study something along these lines we learn that the creatures we study are far more aware and intelligent than humans as a whole are willing to recognise. Even plants communicate with each other, they feel pain, they have defensive strategies that go beyond just emitting some kind of sap or something when they're bitten, etc. I know that I'm going to be called crazy or something but it wouldn't surprise me if consciousness is an emergent property of the universe itself. I think that cities and societies have their own form of consciousness, I think that that becomes apparent with ant colonies for example, how as a whole they're capable of so much more than the individual ants. I think that we (as in individual humans) are as much a collective as we are individuals (because we are, we're not just one unit, we're made of organs which are made of cells which are made of organelles, and then particles, and then atoms, and then sub-atomic particles). I think that the more complex the interaction between these smaller base components, the more awareness there is. If I had to take a guess I'd say the interaction of energy and matter causes it. But this is just pure conjecture, I can't prove this, I wouldn't know how to prove this. I know this isn't scientific, if anything it's spiritual thought. But regardless of all that, I think it's obvious that there's far more to consciousness than we currently understand and I just happen to have my own crazy ideas about it.

The beetle sees, hears and feels it's surroundings isn't it? And it has a little nervous system so it learns that "A causes B" (observe that in yourself!). So yes I'd say its aware. The real question is what IS consciousness/awareness, what is self-consciousness etc. etc. Because if you don't understand what something is, how can you get to know whether something/someone has it? "Does Bob have a floopleboop?" Well I have no idea wtf that actually is so how can I know?! I might end up unknowingly drawing FALSE conclusions out of my ignorance!

Beetles are so cool. I remember when i was in 3rd grade we did a study on live Beetles in the classroom. They were a type of Wood Beetle and I think they made like 20 different noises that we if we could we had to try and identify. Ever since then ive always thought Beetles were one of the coolest insects and I would totally own one as a pet.

I had a vivarium i set up for a cuban tree frog, didn't have a lot of money at the time and I just made the bottom layer aquarium stones. I installed a "waterfall" using a turtle filter that I stuck to the side of the tank which allowed water to trail down the side of the tank into a little pool. The soil got very wet, but the plants I chose did very well in those conditions. My peace lily was trying to grow through the lid.

When I lived in Guyana as a child in the late seventies, I would rescue Coprophanaeus lancifer beetles and take them home, as the school kids seemed to enjoy crushing them for fun. I noticed that each beetle had its own unique character. One, the largest of them all, would cling to my forearm for hours, almost as if it knew it was safe with me and could fly away whenever it chose.

Beware that we tend to anthropomorphize a lot of things, even inanimate objects. That's why it is really hard to study consciousness in animals while accounting for bias. We also tend to define consciousness and awareness in a human centric way.

Two experiences; I once found a spider that scared me. So I decided to put it outside. When I put it inside of a cup, it curled up into a ball shaking in fear. Changed my mind about spiders ever since. Second experience. I saw a jumping spider, and I didn't think anything would happen, but I put my hand out for it to jump on. It did and looked at me really intently. Then cleaned itself. As if it could sense I meant no harm. I've saved a lot of bugs from the bath, sink, and cups since then. I also save bees from inside the house. And have had them relax on me and lick sugar off my fingers with their black tongues. Bugs are just like any other animal.

oh man, i love these questions... I don't know, i truly dont know. What i do think, intellect creates awareness. I think my cats are aware of themselves, i think all mammals are. Some reptiles and birds probably have self-awareness. But the line gets vague and more blurry with insects. I do think it stops at one point, like a bacteria, i don't think they have awareness, they have awareness of their surroundings, but i don't think that they know who or what they are.. ANd what about ants? I think it's similar to the beetle, but i could be wrong, perhaps the beetles are the einsteins of the insects. Who knows.

A channel called "PleaseBee" showcases insect creatures who you'd normally not have as a pet be tamed by them. Some of these creatures show this very consciousness by not biting the KZbinr and seeing them as a food source versus a threat. I'd argue this is prevalent in a handful of creatures, but some are purely driven by receptors and basic needs to survive and reproduce, like flies
