Hello there, before I moved to United States, I work as radiologic technician in my country. I have more than 15 years experience in the radiology field. I was trained in Hospital and Clinic, I have certificate. now I would like to attend courses to become a licensed R.T in United States. I'd like to have advice from you, what should I do?

I advise any international students and radiographers to contact the ARRT for specific advice. I am not familiar with the process that you would need to go through but you should be able to use this website to contact someone trained to guide you appropriately: www.arrt.org/pages/earn-arrt-credentials/how-to-apply/international-inquiries

As soon as i found out i was pregnant i told my boss and manager. Im a registered dental assistant in a busy office so x rays, panos, and ct scans are a big part of what i do. However when i asked if i should do anything different they said no precautions were necessary because radiation is so little compared to many years ago. I asked for a badge and they said by law that was not required anymore. I took it on myself to use a lead apron over my stomach even though they said i dont have to do that but i am so scared to expose my baby. I then asked to please order a badge for me and they did but it was only because i insisted. Im almost twelve weeks now and i didnt get the badge until last week. I could be exaggerating but i feel like they are in the wrong. There is another pregnant girl now she just found out and they told her not to wear the apron when she takes x rays. I think because they heard me when i told her to take care of herself and cover her belly.

Good job advocating for yourself and your baby! Although it is true that radiation dosage has been reduced over the years that doesn’t account for the fact that there is no threshold for a “safe” amount of radiation exposure. I’d rather take the precautions of abiding by radiation safety measures than potentially put my child at risk for any negative effects of radiation. I hope that your coworker follows your lead throughout her pregnancy as well even with naysayers around 😜

Hello , I am currently taking my last two prerequisites and I can apply for the program in February , I am super nervous I have a one year old and I know it’s going to be difficult but I really want to do this for my son and myself as well. Do you have any tips for the mommy’s that want to succeed and do you think it’s possible ?
@SydneyPipp
@SydneyPipp 5 күн бұрын
It’s absolutely possible! My son was a year old when I started school and then I went back for my bachelors after my daughter was born. My biggest tip is to really focus when you’re in lecture and make the most out of your time that you’re physically in class. That way once you’re home you can give your son all of your attention. Then if you need to study you can try to squeeze that in after bedtime. Don’t wait until it’s quiz time to ask for help understanding a topic- if you don’t get it in class then immediately ask your instructor to explain it in a way you can comprehend it. That way you aren’t trying to teach yourself at midnight right before an exam 😅 You’ve got this!

Hey! I am so sorry to hear about your test results. Did you get your paper results through the mail yet? Understanding which categories you need to focus on can give you a good starting point for studying. If you scored below a 75 on all sections of the registry then I would focus on either working through your test anxiety or taking the time to review all of your notes from the entire program. I don’t offer personalized tutoring right now but if you haven’t checked out my video about failing the ARRT registry then that may give you some extra insight on how to handle your next steps. It’s hard for me to say because every X-ray tube is different and it depends on if you’re using a grid vs tabletop. However, for a baby table top chest you can usually go with around 70kv at 1 to 2 mAs.

That is so funny! I got pulled from class to do that interview 🤣 Your instructors are fantastic and will prepare you with all of the necessary knowledge, it’s on you to show up to clinical each day with confidence and the willingness to learn. You will see techs do things “their own way” and you can ask them why to pick up on tips or tricks that they have learned over the years. Some of the techs you work with will be great and others will be not so great.. but each will expect you to do things THEIR way. Play the game and learn what works best for you until you graduate and you can do things your way. Be eager to participate in exams- even if you’re just observing for the first day. If your patient care shines through then the patient won’t know that you have no idea what you’re doing the first week. Haha! I hope this helped, good luck!

Don’t know if you mentioned it or not but if anyone plans on using their gi bill they should google Gi bill calculator. Very helpful. It allows you to see if you have to pay anything out of pocket if your Gi bill doesn’t cover the full cost. Shows you the BAH of the zip-code around the school area not the zip-code of where you live and also lets you know if the school has a yellow ribbon program or if the school accreditation is in jeopardy or is marked for cautionary or filed complaints against the school. Used mines for respiratory therapy (18 months) and going back to for radiologic technology at Concorde career college. Have 17 months left of my Gi bill. Awesome video.

If your hospital has flexible scheduling you can see about working a weekend position while in school and the evenings that you have lecture with no clinicals (those days tend to be shorter). As you go further into the program I would recommend trying to reduce the hours you work unless you’re able to study well at work. I know it’s stressful to manage school and work but it’s temporary and so worth it in the end!

Can you pls expand the difference between x ray tech and ct tech I’m not sure if my saying it right but can you explain the difference
@SydneyPipp
@SydneyPipp 13 күн бұрын
X-ray is a 2 dimensional image taken with a single exposure (picture). CT is a scan that takes hundreds/thousands of images over the duration of the scan. During a CT, patients lay on a table and go through a “donut” while the tech operates the movements of the table from behind a console. X-ray techs have to position and align the X-ray equipment in a particular position in order to take the patients X-ray. I hope this helped!

I have a bad back. My pain ranges day to day going from slight to moderate to severe. I have to do physical therapy just to reduce my pain. Is it still a good idea to pursue this career if I'm looking for stability? Do the stress on your back just depend on where you work or is it the same everywhere? I have also tried office work and sitting down for hours at a time also caused me pain. Any advice you can give me is super helpful.

You might want to look into MRI if you choose to go the medical imaging route. They have outpatient facilities where most patients are able to move themselves and there is quite a bit of up and down but not as much as traditional X-ray. The part that I’d be concerned about for you is getting through school because in X-ray clinicals they expect you to be up and willing to do every exam which could be very hard on your back and you need to go through X-ray to become MRI certified (unless you can find a program that im not aware of). good luck!

@SydneyPipp
@SydneyPipp 13 күн бұрын
If you have support from family to help cover the second shift clinicals (my school had a 1pm to 9pm second shift schedule) then the childcare you need would be similar to just having a regular day shift job. The biggest struggle I had was trying to find time to study after bedtime since toddlers need your constant attention! Haha. I sat up front in class and paid close attention to lectures in order to try to retain enough information so that I didn’t need to study as much 😅 It is totally doable though! Good luck!

I didn’t use rad tech boot camp but I’ve heard good things about it. I primarily used Mosby’s and a little bit of the yellow book. The most important take away that I got from studying is to not focus on memorizing questions and answers but to really understand the concept behind the question. Reading over the reasons why a question was marked as incorrect or correct helped me the most.

Join the military for Xray, the program is half the time and have a higher pass rate than most schools. Also MRI tech here. 1. Bust your ass and work 60-80 hours a week at a level 1 trauma center, experience is key in selling why you are worth more than others. 2. Get both CT and MRI registries ASAP, Find a facility that’s so desperate you can take full advantage of them. Remember with 3 registries you’re more valuable to them than you are them. Negotiate a weekend shift diff and remind them you make the hospital more money than a nurse. YES this is aggressive but also it’s not 2008 where there were no jobs. If you have 3 registries you can make 50 an hour no problem with a weekend shift and an on call basis. If you want 8-5 m-f it will be high 30s low 40s unless you can negotiate. So good luck out there.

I saw that the US Air Force has an X-Ray tech program, is this the path you took? You could potentially go straight into the program without prerequisites being completed depending on the college you choose. However, with it being your first college experience it would be good for you to knock out some prerequisites while you’re working. Once you’re in the program it is possible to work but you’re only going to be available in the evenings or weekends most likely. Clinicals are all day in person 2-3 days a week through most of the program. The other core courses are also in person. You might be able to get some prerequisites done online though.

There are usually breaks for X-ray techs between cases when they are cleaning up one case and setting up another. Outpatient centers/urgent care shouldn’t have call hours to be concerned about.

My school only accepts roughly 20 students for each cohort that starts in August with no waitlist. There is another school local to me that has a two year wait list but you're pretty much guaranteed a seat if you wait long enough (you have to take classes while you are on the wait list). I have a military background as well as transcripts from my degree in surgical technology so my application was approved fairly quickly.

Physics and calculus ALMOST made drop out of undergrad😅I vowed to never take either of those courses again but I really want to go to radiology school.

There is no calculus to worry about! If you passed your general physics the credit could transfer.

Retaking the exam for the second time in 9 days, failed with a 74 on my first attempt. Used my score report to practice where I struggle but not sure if the Kettering book and rad tech bootcamp is enough. 😅 I’m stressed

I just passed my exam yesterday. I used correct tec for 2 hours a day for two months before my exam. I repeated every exercise until I passed it with at least a 90%. If I didn’t understand a question I would look it up. I would recommend Clover(Rad Tech Bootcamp). I thought the questions on the registry were similarly worded to the questions on there. I think I would’ve score better if I used clover more. Two people in my class failed but one just retook it and passed. 😊 she used correct tec and clover to study for her second attempt.

I couldn’t help but notice that you’re using your GI Bill! How was the process for you? I’m looking forward to get out of the military and use my GI Bill for x-ray school

It was so easy! It paid for both my associates and bachelors and I still have some remaining to work on my masters! The financial aid office will work with you and all you should have to provide them with is your GI bill letter of eligibility (might be called something else). Just make sure to apply for FAFSA too so that you can support yourself/family while you’re in school!

@SydneyPipp What did you get your bachelor's in? Also, how did you manage to have the GI Bill pay for both associates and bachelor's? I just started college and I'm doing prerequisites right now, and I'm just worried I won't have enough time left from the GI Bill to pay for a bachelor's.

My bachelors degree is a bachelor of science with an emphasis in education. I took my time completing all of the required courses (sometimes only taking 2 courses per semester) and I still have 12 months of benefits remaining for my GI bill. I plan to use it again for a masters program in the near future 😅 Even if you are taking your time with prerequisites you SHOULD have enough to complete a bachelors degree as well.
