So glad Hedda Hopper helped him obtain "The Great Caruso." She was in his corner after this performance.

IMO yes, well done, very impassioned (as always) but for me a little too much so at the very end .. "... il cor". Like "overacting", this is "oversinging".

Well Mario ha this naturally thick luscious wavy pompador. Caruso didn't. His hair was thinner and straight. Mario wins in my opinion!

Maestro Tucker: among the absolute best of tenors. I wish I could have seen him in person. This Flower Song is among the most beautiful I have ever heard. As good as Mario Lanza and almost as good as the Great Caruso.

We have the benefit of advanced audio technology for The Great American tenor Mario Lanza. I prefer Mario! There is diversity of hue in Mario's interpretation. There's more pathos also. Mario's rendition is flawless. But those who witnessed Caruso are to be credited for their perception in his day. Mario loved and imitated Caruso. He even benefited by being coached by Caruso's vocal coached Giacomo Spadoni. They eerily had so much in common, I can see why some people thought of Mario as the reincarnation of Caruso. Still, I do believe Caruso would have been a fan of the young prodigy in from South Philly. Mario Lanza!

All three were great musical interpretations. Pav was exactly what I expected. His lyric tenor was consistent. Lanza sang with the most dramatic energy and soaring color combined with a lilting yet warm timbre. Bjorling began softly and demurely bloomed his lilting tenor tonality. He also seemed to rely on his natural voice to convey sensitivity. Yet his cultivated voice strengthened his performance with force. All three are from different generations, Pav having the benefit of Bjorling and Lanza as mentoring inspiration. Lanza stands out with power and diversity of sound due to his lirico spinto range, having the lyric quality that blushes with brightness and color. Yet the authority of his chest register thunders with sensuality.

Both great singers indeed. Lanza had a little more effort in this Aria which makes it more exciting to be involved in. Pavarotti on the other hand was no less emotional. Pavarotti said because of Lanza he took up singing.

He died a year and ten months after this performance which was in March 1973 at age 59. he died on Jan. 8th, 1975 at age 61, and he didn't ever Copy Caruso, not ever, as he always said, "I sing like Tucker, I don't copy or imitate anyone" as he also said, that was a good way too hurt your voice and shorten your career.

Listening to Zanelli as a fine baritone & then his transitional to a fine tenor is an accomplishment that has yet to be matched, IMO. Zanelli was singing OTELLO before Martinelli took it on & had he not died at only age 43, apparently, might have been eventually even greater in the role, both vocally & interpretively. Merli was another outstanding OTELLO at this time.

Most of Tucker's professional reviews, as in the three reviews by British critics given here (in all his 30 roles) where excellent in his 30 years at the Met. and in other opera houses here, and in Europe, Canada, South America Asia, Etc. and the three professional reviews posted here, he was at age 59 given very favorable reviews for this live in house performance, he died at age 61, just a year and ten months after this performance, in Jan. 1975. Richard Tucker operatic tenor and great Cantor. Aug. 28,1913- Jan. 8, 1975, RIP.

Desmond Shawe Taylor, highly respected critic of the London Times said at the time, 1973 about Tucker, "London has heard little of Richard Tucker, a leading Metropolitan tenor since the war, now in his late 50's, when I first heard him in Verona in 1947 in Gioconda , singing with Maria Callas, he produced some of the most luscious and finally controlled tenor tone I had ever encountered, today although he has lost that sweetness (which is not really required for Elezar) he still combines a smooth line with a dramatic intensity that can sweep the house off it's feet, as he did in his big aria".

I'm astounded that Carreras was the least acclaimed tenor of the three tenors! He had a beautiful voice, superior to that of Domingos, yet Domingo was the one that was well known and more sucessful!

I truly memorable performance of this aria that rivals Caruso’s rendition. As Tucker admired Caruso above most any tenors he respects the latter singer’s memory by restraining from the overly indulgent vocal effects that he could often be guilty of in certain other roles. This, for me, may be the greatest singing I have heard from him & 2 years later in Seattle he was still vocally in fine shape as Canio but with the annoying mannerisms back in place. 7 months after this production he had a fatal heart attack prior to an evening recital with Merrill.
