Most of my riding has been while living for 15 years in Thailand. Near Osaka, I've only ever ridden [after the short train ride] from Kansai Airport. Always on road. The Koya area is just stunning, Last year, I moved to the countryside in Hokkaido! No bicycle riding for me in winter [when I stick to boards]., but summer is just perfect. See you there.

If you know the area a bit better, there are better ways to get to the area you went to, but local knowledge is always a bit hard to come by when relying on websites. But overall, yea, I imagine that for serious cycling, there maybe be better destinations.

John, how come an experienced rider like you doesn't have a spare hanger along on a trip? I've seen this so often, I remember at the Vanilla, Stuart Campbell fell off in 2020, and of course broke his hanger on his Canyon.... Couldn't find one in Chiang Mai though....Great video though!

Having been to Calpe/Europe, what are your thoughts on the cycling culture in TW? I went in Sept last year and was expecting to see loads of cyclists but in the 8 days I was there I only saw one group who incidentally were a bunch of Singaporean cyclists on holiday. For sure I expected more

My thoughts on cycling culture in Taipei is it’s one of the best. I’m so surprised to hear of your experience there. The cycling community is huge. Rapha hosts open rides you can join without a membership. PNS also has group rides but I think you need to wear their kit to join. Feed Zone Cafe has their own weekly rides too. It’s possible you didn’t see many cyclists because there are so many options for routes from Taipei. I’m looking forward to going back to explore more of the country outside of Taipei.

Awesome takes! that's a very sharp bend with little visibility right after the downhill part, I usually ride exactly there, you can keep straight just a few more meters where it flattens and then turn right on the next street (the one near the 7-11 or even the next one) and right again and you end up in the same road

Loved watching this. I did the exact same stops in January 2023 except we overnighted in Chom Thong and did Doi Inthanon on our last day. No panniers up Inthanon so that was good but boy was it brutal. Thanks so much for all your great work putting this together as I just took photos on my crap phone.

FYI, the third class train is only for daily train from BKK to Kanchanaburi and it is very cheap less than 100 baht. But the bike costs 100 baht extra no matter how far you go, even 1 station away it is 100 baht while 1 station away it is less than 10 baht. However, folding bike is free, but you need to fold it first and leave it folded in the train. There is plenty of room for your folding bike to store. BTW, there is special tourist train from Bangkok as well but the price is more due to better seat/schedule, allowing you time to stop at the River Kware Bridge.

I don't see it clearly but believe that there is a statute of King Naresuan the Great who liberated Ayutthaya kingdom from the Burmese. When Ayutthaya Kingdom surrendered to the Burmese invaders, Prince Naresuan, young son of appointed new Ayutthaya King was taken hostage to Hongsawadee city, capital of Burma then. One day, there was a cock fighting between Burmese King's son and Prince Naresuan and Naresuan's cock won the fight. Burmese King's son was miffed and remarked that "the hostage's cock was quite good", just to remind Prince Naresuan that although you won, but you yourself was still a captive. Later Naresuan's elder sister was exchanged so that Naresuan could be returned to Ayutthaya. He later declared independence and the Burmese King ordered his son to lead troops to pursue Naresuan's army. The troops clashed and in a melee, it was emerged that King Naresuan was surrounded by Burmese troops. He then challenged the Burmese Prince for a personal duel on elephants and killed the prince, securing victory and independence. There are several Naresuan statues in Thailand and at each, cocks were offered to surround the statute, symbolizing the first victory against Burmese Prince by a proxy.

Never imagine in my life seeing road bike BKK tour. I have seen several simple, single gear normal bike BKK tours over the years and I also did BKK bike tour by myself 20 years ago a few times on Sunday when biking back from Thonburi side of Bangkok to my town in Pakkret, Nonthaburi on a MTB, the so-called Nonthaburi-Thonburi-BKK loop over 2 bridges across Chao Phraya river.

I can recommend north Osaka for cycling, like the video. Go from Minoh to Myoken mountain, drop down to Keyaki and Hitakura Dam as featured in your video. In the countryside I can definitely say that the drivers are courteous and will wait behind you on a climb around a blind corner.

Interesting. I really want to go back to Japan. I didn’t have a great experience last time but I always say that I don’t think that’s indicative of how the cycling truly is in the country.

I am so disheartened that this whiney punk travels europe and reinforces bad stereotypes of american travelers- you are in a foreign country baby, adapt and breath as a local breathe. stop with your coffee-bad and pulled-over-for-running a red bullshit, what a ferkin’ spoiled pissant

Your comment about trying to make a bit of an effort with the language is so true, it changes your experience completely. I think we feel that if we butcher it all will be lost, but that's far from it. The last few winters in Ive spent in Chiang Mai and as much as I attempt the language lol, they understand and as a guest I think it can improve your time there immensely. Great videos

It’s pretty complicated. At first, I did nothing but rest. I only went to seek professional help after arriving in Taipei. In the end, I believe it was my tight and weak hips that were the cause of my neck strain. I now stretch and train in the gym 4/5 times a week

Hi Johnny.....loved your video of the loop.........very good quality............the ride looks great and you have inspired me to come there...........and the roads are super..........just a couple of things from an old bike-packer........I noticed your downhill speed was much faster than I would go so please be careful..............your hands were more often than not.........on the top of your handlebar brakes...........very dangerous.........should be at the lowest point possible which gives you more balance in case of holes on the road or silly on coming trucks........... also your riding shirts were very dark .......also very dangerous .........on the last leg I did not see any bicycle lights............riding at night wearing dark clothing and no lights.........riding at night is very dangerous...I have about 4 lights on all the time..........even during the day............I hope you are not offended by my comments..........I am 72 years old......cheers Kenny from Melbourne
