Do you happen to know what kind of structure remains in the GMR, near the Sunfish Lock outside of Miamisburg? I've searched all over but found nothing. It's directly to the east of Camp Chautauqua and can be seen using Google maps.
@pkevpik6 күн бұрын
That was a dam on the great Miami River that fed the Franklin hydraulic canal which you can still see the remains of on the east side of the river south of there.

Awesome. Thank you for replying! We were looking at it last weekend and it piqued my curiosity. I couldn't find any info on it - do you have any good resources for the old canal/lock history?

Cincinatti Eastern should lease that section to store cars on and make more money.

The east end of the aqueduct was probably destroyed during construction of the Conservancy Dam itself, which was built using Hydraulic earth-moving methods, so that the central wedge of the earthen dam would be packed clay, as it settled, providing the impermeable core necessary. Visitors should see it in winter, as you did, or prepare to deal with clouds of mosquitoes.

We went to Americana every year for my Mom's company picnic which included a day riding the rides, we were assigned one of the picnic pavilions shown in the video. I also remember going to Fantasy Farm when I was a kid back in the 1960's. I am glad to see that the City of Monroe has taken it over as a park.

I am sad. Part of me always wanted to see it rebuilt. Now, after watching this video i see that will not ever happen. Alway's be in my memories and the handful of video's on KZbin showing what it was once like in it's heyday (s)

I visited these locks a number of years ago, and it is a fascinating site! It is hard for people to comprehend how, back in the 1830s they were able to figure out how to let boats "climb up" a hill...using nothing but gravity! Locks are amazing, and these ruins testify to the skills of the canal builders. My only slightly negative comment...I wish they local canal society, or the the town of Lockington, would cut out the bushes and trees growing with the lock chambers. Over time, their roots will pull down the stone walls!

Any idea how often trains run on this route across the bridge? I do a lot of photography in Hamilton and I'd love to get some photos of a train crossing the Great Miami here.

You might like watch Cruising the Cut www.youtube.com/@CruisingTheCut. I've only really known of the Erie and C&O navigation canals in the USA. I may not be time yet, but I think it would be interesting if I people in the USA would restore past historic navigation canals for recreational canal boats not that some commercial use would be prohibited such as the River and Canal Trust has done and operates in Britain. The Miami and Erie Canal is desirable recreational canal boat travel way because it would provide scenic cruises going through the heartland from northern Ohio to the southern Ohio.

Nice video and lots of great memories of this place. Living between Cincy ane Hamilton, we always came here for fun instead of Coney. The excitement of visiting LeSourdsville each time was so great as a child and teenager. Very nice to see they have turned it into a park so it's still being enjoyed. :)

Great video! Saw this after your Sharonville aqueduct video. I liked the boats eye view returning up the locks. What you can’t see is the remains of another lock and aqueduct just below these.

There actually a good stretch of the canal ditch around that area. From Cresentville Road south to the UPS distribution center. Just look for Canal Road that parallels it. Pretty easy to spot on Google Earth. There is also a stretch of canal and a couple turning basins between Mitchell and Ludlow between Mill Creek and 75. Probably the southernmost remains.

I know this video is pretty old, but I am wondering if you are from Hamilton and how you were able fly over. My father in law has been is missing for 10 days in Hamilton. We’re trying to locate his car. Ground/car search has not uncovered anything. An Ariel view would help us. Do you have connections with someone that might be able to help? Thanks in advance.

This video just popped up in my youtube page (reason for the late response). My great-great grandfather had a canal boat that possibly traveled on this canal though he eventually settled into the Whitewater canal before he ultimately sold the boat as the method of passage declined. I live close to this area and will have to check it out.

What a beautiful city. My only criticism (and please, I don’t mean to offend anybody, or be a troll) is the river. And not that I don’t appreciate the fact that there’s a river there. I really do. In fact, to me, a city or town, is not “complete” without a river, or a lake. But this lake looks “dirty” (I hate to use that word). It also looks “dead” and even “empty” (it looks like it could literally have “more water”). Then again, I’m not an expert. I wonder if maybe the water looks so brown due to natural reasons. Or maybe it’s something about the time of the year? Something about the weather? Any Hamilton natives (or people who know this place) reading this? I’m not here to judge. I’m here to learn, so corrections are more than welcome. On a different subject, I think this Ohio city is phenomenal. It really seems like the kind of place I’d live in. It’s not too small, not too big. I seems developed. And like I said, it’s just beautiful. Greetings from your brother state, Wisconsin. 🛶🐿
@strokingoutloudpodcast2 жыл бұрын
Lol a bunch of toxic waste was dumped in the lake in the 80s by a company named chemdyne it was unauthorized and the company was sued. Not sure if that’s why it’s brown but the river is for sure considered dirty
@Atlas_9662 жыл бұрын
Dirt and crap get constantly washed down the small dam area by the bridge before Hamilton. This created uproar in the dirt and causes the water to become “Murky”. It also is because I think that the dirt underneath the water is very loose or very rich in color, again, causing the dirty color.
@ChristisKing774910 ай бұрын
It looks like it could hold more water because the banks were built up after a catastrophic flood in 1913. There was also one in the late 1800s. The river does not normally look muddy, this is the result of rain.
@ChristisKing774910 ай бұрын
The river is full of fish, even bald eagles nest near. (You dont want to eat any fish, as someone else stated Chemdyne let hazardous waste flow in to it in the 1980s)

I was with CSX (then Chessie System prior to the merger) when they collapsed several smaller yards in the Cincinnati area into Queensgate. Much more efficient operation and they locals liked it because it eliminated scores of grade crossings. Back in 1978 Queensgate had two humps. I see that has expanded.
