Love to see the competition making improvements. This is confidence building. Maybe my next NAS won’t be a Synology.

Wanted to come back and leave some positivity. Your videos are super helpful and you're straight to the point. I watch you nearly every day before heading into work and you always have a fresh, personal, and unbiased perspective. It's also cool to see you reference others, such as Robbie from NAS Compares and others. Wishing you all the best and just wanted to say thanks, I know we all have bad days and just sending good vibes your way, never know what someone is going through 🤙 P.S. Video quality is top notch with the lighting, audio, etc. Really enjoying the setup, as a fellow creative.

Before buying a Ugreen NAS product , I’m gonna check if Ugreen will be as bad as Qnap CVE security worst brand of NAS ever. Qnap security is a joke , I really hope that Ugreen has a real security team and patch their stuff as good as Synology. Once they are hit by a deadbolt lookalike stuff , we will see how pro Ugreen is really is and if they are better then Qnap.
@bnjmz7 ай бұрын
For sure. 90% of the reason for having a NAS is security (either from hardware failures or accidents or malicious intent). The other 10% is convenience. That is so much more important than factors such as speed. Speed doesn't matter when you're ransomware'd.
@notreallyme4257 ай бұрын
I don’t think people know just how bad Qnap has been with security.

At least they give you the option of installing your own OS, not possible on synology

So do I buy a 923+ now or not?
@WunderTechTutorials7 ай бұрын
I wish I could say. I just don't know. If a new 4-bay doesn't come out this year, yes, probably not a bad idea, but if a new one does, you have to decide for yourself if you'd be upset you bought one.
@RoastLambShanks7 ай бұрын
@@WunderTechTutorials I'm thinking the best option might be to just get a 2 bay DS224+, for now and wait for the next line to come out. Maybe even the budget one you recommended, the DS223j. I need something today, but i'd be pissed if i fork out a grand or so and then a new line comes out within 18 months. But then, the price difference isn't that much, going from 224+ to the 923+, but with the added benefit of easy expansion. This really is annoying.
@jasperverkroost7 ай бұрын
What bothers me is that Synology doesn't even give us a clue on what is ahead regarding NAS-updates. I mean, the least they could do is state (for example) that the first new NAS'es are due for Q4 of 2024.. Thanks for the video (and the previous one), you're one or the very few that addresses this issue, even though a lot of Synology fans are impatiently waiting on what will be next.
@DavidM20027 ай бұрын
I don't think that's unusual for most product vendors. If they did, sales of currently available product might stall while we all wait for the next best thing. When current inventory starts getting low, they will start releasing details on the new stuff.

The fact that you can throw another OS on a Ugreen unit means their software doesn't have to be as good as Synology (same with some Qnap units) for a lot of homelabbers/tinkerers. The much better hardware at a decent price would be worth it if I weren't a DIY type but I get that 'the average user' is probably going to run it with the software it comes with so hopefully they can compare favorably in functionality and security with Synology someday.

it kills me that we can't purchase them here in the UK yet...I need a new NAS and struggling to hold off for synology to know if there will ever be something new this year or not.

Agreed, I expect they will concentrate on the enterprise market to maximize profits going forward. I do hope the consumer line continues to get the attention it has in the past. It is what helped put them on the map. Most private/home users started there and then ended up bringing XS and DS into the corporate environments. based on the knowledge and experience they gained while using their hardware and software, and the ease of use and confidence they shared with their experiences.

Wow, I’m actually pretty impressed by how quickly UGreen seems to be fixing big problems with the OS. I think the biggest things they still need to deal with before I would be able to make the jump or recommend it is: 1 - Severely Improve Security 2 - Better Backups, along with the ability to backup to another UGreen. 3 - A way to restore to factory Settings, or Restore the device if for some reason you lock yourself out of the system or something (don’t know if they already have this). It would also be nice if we could add an NVIDIA graphics card and maybe a supplemental power supply for the GPU if needed (yes I know a NAS is meant to be low power consumption but still), would be nice to maybe put in an old 1080Ti for Transcoding or something.
@xellaz7 ай бұрын
They do have a factory reset option on the NAS.

I've been wanting/needing to upgrade my DS119J for some time, looking at DS224+, but can't bring myself to spend that much money yet! Home user, mainly for backing up phones(photos) and laptops. Looking at 2 bay. Any suggestions? Like DSM, but can't use any apps as too slow, but need Google Photos alternative.
@WunderTechTutorials7 ай бұрын
It's tough because the 224+ uses the same processor from the 920+, so it's not exactly new. However, since they just released the 723+, I'm not sure we'll be getting a new 2-bay this year (though that's a complete guess). I am thinking they will update the 15/16/18 line first, but again, pure guess - I don't have any info that you don't have unfortunately.

I personally got so tired of their lack of HW and waiting for a new HW set that I just did a script for a saved DSM 7.2 backup on Proxmox, set it to 4 cores, 4GB of RAM (could have and still can increase these), and passed through X2 12TB HDD's for storage, 4TB USB for backup, and X1 1TB SSD for caching. Saved ~$400 and works great for my use case! Was even able to add a container on the DSM for Photoprism. This was absolutely the way to go for me. Note: Advanced Media Extensions (AME) wouldn't install properly to config and Synology Photos' Ai didn't catalog people at all. Indexing would just sort of hang. Other than this, full featured and with the PhotoPrism container installed, works great. Kinda odd to have a container on a HV ISO on Proxmox and makes me think of Inception. 🤪

The only reason I'd stick with Synology despite the hardware that is lacking is because of their history on how good they manage security and fixing CVE's. Also they have a great amount of apps that are available and also there is a lot of support online for achieving things like using Synology to function as a VPN server, or Pi-Hole, or Docker Container server etc. It does frustrate me that the hardware for the price could be far better but at the end of the day it gets done what I need doing and the hardware is supported for a long life-cycle which I appreciate because I have a lot of data I want to store securely and this makes it the most economical way of doing that for me.

After looking at NAS and different options, I ended up going with my own build. I know a lot don't like unraid but in terms of ease of use and cost to do, it just made the most sense. Core™ i7-12700K, 32 GB of RAM, 16TB (usage) and 8 TB (parity) it just made the most sense. I wish the hardware that these NAS offered was better for the price, it just feels like you pay a premium for the SFF. I will keep my eye on the software and hardware changes, hopefully one day arm chips will be the CPU of choice.
@akurenda19857 ай бұрын
The hardware is better, the software is not. So unless you plan on putting your own OS on Ugreen, it's not at all better. When you put your own OS on it, you're the support. Also, Synology HQ is Taiwan, Ugreen HQ is in China. Supply chain compromises and cyber terrorism are a real thing. There's no question that the hardware is better, but that's only one side of the coin. If everybody cared about the hardware and not the software ecosystem, nobody would have started using Mac's.
@WunderTechTutorials7 ай бұрын
I don't think that the UGreen devices are better than Synology. Synology is far better due to the software, but I was just highlighting that it's improved.

I've seen Synology running on a totally unique rack. You can get the OS from a machine and virtualize. I don't know now but it's doable

I heard that Docker Compose is installed in the underlying UGOS (Debian), but not exposed in the interface. It's good to see Ugreen feverishly working to improve the UI and bring features in the underlying OS graphically to the user. Will they ever approach Synology? Doubtful. QNAP and Terramaster haven't and they've been around quite a long time. Thecus, last I saw (I owned a couple of them, years back) never quite shook out all the Chinese phraseology from the UI. Ugreen is already better in that respect. Giving Ugreen a good chance here. Synology is lacking these days. They need a worthy competitor.
@Act1veSp1n7 ай бұрын
I hope UGREEN pushes Synology to finally abandon using 10 year old hardware.
@tonyvalenti66147 ай бұрын
Interesting …. Makes me wonder if the Synology hold up is they a prepping for a big upgrade for home users. Then again, are they looking to compete with Dell, HP and Microsoft in the enterprise? Would that lead them to spin off their home use servers as a separate subsidiary? I guess as always, time will tell. Side note: Granted UGreen may have better hardware today, but I still wouldn’t trade Synology’s maturity and reliability for a start up just yet. Heck, I’m just happy I dumped my Drobo’s for Synology!
@Dextermorga6 ай бұрын
Still waiting. Come on Synology
@seanwoods15267 ай бұрын
This is my frustration right now. We see a full generational leap in performance with CPU enhancements and instead of Synology moving they continue to try and sell us on how great they are doing with 2-3 generation old CPUs. I won’t lie I love the software and mostly the support, but this hardware has me timing of moving on to UGreen for my hardware and wait for the update of Truenas that is coming later this year. In my work life they are solid they work and for what we need the units for they are great. But for the home and small business I am moving away from Synology.

Ugreen NASync on the Kickstarter price was unbeatable. This nas will last 10 years easily and will probably still outperform any consumer nas device that Synology releases in 10 years 😂

A NAS is a NAS and stays a NAS. So when your NAS is idleling at 10-15%, then a NAS with newer hardware will get even more bored. DSM is, like you said, the best OS for NAS and that is what counts.

@WunderTechTutorials7 ай бұрын
I don't necessarily think that people should run out to buy one, but I was very harsh on them in my review and feel like I should give credit where credit is due. The OS is still not where it needs to be, but it's gotten better.

I do not believe Synology will release any competitive consumer/prosumer NAS's hardware EVER again ....Synology is in deep trouble for the next few product cycles
5 ай бұрын
I wish Synology provides better hardware, if they do they will be unstopplable. I had a Qnap and had to return it, I want something to just work, that is why I ended with Synology. But I am very unhappy with their hardware and the big profit on selling us very discontinued hardware parts (cpu, etc) so expensive and on top forcing us to their hardware extensions that cost x6 any other brand. I whish UGREEN (or any other) gets better in terms of software at some point, that will force Synology to release better hardware.
@tomschi94857 ай бұрын
*Synology is making very poor strategic decisions:* it seems that Synology is degenerating into a backup appliance. The backup functions are OK, but not great either. 1. Synology *ignores the customers they grew up with* (home users and small businesses) 2. *For companies, Synology is not professional enough, e.g.* they don't offer professional deployment of Synology applications to the clients and they have CRITICAL bugs, e.g. Synology Drive does not map the security on the NAS to the client
