Merry Christmas! To celebrate, let's look back on a wintry movie, Ice Age. How well did this cenozoic cinema depict life during the ice age? Does it hold up to modern paleontology? #dinosaurs #paleontology #iceage

Fun fact! At the time, Scrat was an entirely fictional animal, a Sabretoothed Squirrel, but quite bizarrely palaeontologists have a found a prehistoric mammal that basically is Scrat, it’s called Cronopio dentiacutus, & it lived in Mid-Cretaceous Patagonia 99 MYA, while it’s not a Squirrel, it’s impossible to deny its semblance to Scrat. So if Scrat is retroactively a Cronopio, that means he’s from the subterranean Dinosaur world from the 3rd film.

While like for the movie Disney "Dinosaur" I usually would otherwise think this movie don't deserved an accuracy video since this movie produced by BlueSky clearly have zero intents of educative purposes and go very deep into the cartoon and artistic direction about several aspect.... I however still enjoy greatly this video as diving in a way or another in the universe of this franchise, and especially the very first movie from which everything started (for me who have grow up with it, along it) is always a pleasure. And pointing out the inaccuracies of this movie to avoid potential young people and others what they can see in it isn't to be blindly taken and instead only with grain of salt is a fair thing to do. Aside than that, was a nice video, and very relevant for release at the day of christmas itself, given the very icy theme ! Very Christmas ! Red Raptor !

Yeah, using real life animals in documentaries about prehistory and extinct animals have always do this, even a lot. As plenty of animals clade we have today were already existing far long ago even many before the Dinosaurs and that modern members still look pretty much the same or close enough to extinct relatives. Like, why bothering itself to model a 3D Mesozoic small mammal or a Carboniferous scorpion when the animals of these clades alive we have look entirely like what would look these supposed species ? It's easier to just shot these animals and to implement them into the doc.

We also see what appear to be some chunky tapirs with short elephant-like trunks and slender legs with rather chunky feet. Now I’m not really sure if they are tapirs, I just call them that because they look similar, which I’m not usually known to do without knowing more about particular creatures that look similar to others that they’re not, but whatever. Apparently tapirs did inhabit North America during the ice age until about 12,000 years ago or 10,000 BC, but I don’t know if they would have lived this far north or if any were this thick, but I doubt they would have had proper trunks or thick feet as perissodactylids (which is the order tapirs are in) typically have feet as thick as their calves, and their toes don’t resemble elephant toes like what’s shown in the franchise. They also appear to lack hair or fur, which really tapirs would have. If anyone else knows more about these animals and how much they differ from their real life counterparts, do let me know.

It's an outdated depiction of Moeritherium, a basal proboscidean which lived in North Africa during the Eocene. It also appears in the Walking With Beasts episode with the Basilosaurus. It's more likely that It didn't have a trunk and it probably had a lifestyle similar to that of a Hippo or a pygmy hippo

Yeah, I see over the years quite a fair amount of meme or stuff against the baby (who while not named in the movie itself is named Roshan I think). And yes, I don't understand the hate many people have against him. Sure may have its flaws and sometimes can be not supportable, but overall he still Ok as a character (that and the fact he is also the key driving force of the movie). And he have his scenes too. The goodbye at the end really neat and emotionnal.

I'm just remembering the montage where the characters walk by Old Faithful, then Stonehenge. This ought to be fun. Yeah, I recall the dodos' presence coming off a bit goofy even as a kid. The implications they were dying off in the first movie went over my head, but I remember seeing the sequel which only shows one dodo promptly get killed following which they're all in heaven implying they're extinct and being like, "What? People who had writing saw live dodos, why are mammoths and smilodons being depicted outliving them?" Though yes, my family found that scene a stand-out quotable movie moment. I also remember seeing the megatherium scene in Walking With Prehistoric Beasts and it bugged me ever since how small Sid was. Neat to hear that there is in fact a real-life species that was closer to his size. Though it's kind of weird that the official website implied he was a megatherium. Yes, I visited the official website where you'd race characters around through the ice tunnel and play whack-a-mole with Scrat.

Okay, so a funny thing about the Dodos is that Bluesky didn't actually want to add them in the movie at all, they were forced to by Fox who "suggested" they add in Dodos. When Bluesky stated they didn't want to due to Dodos not being present in the setting, Fox threatened to cut funding. This is the reason why all the Dodos are shown dying in cartoonish ways, and the only other time they show up in the franchise was one dying to a geyser towards the end of the second film and never again.

One accuracy actually in Dawn of the Dinosaurs that I liked was early in the movie when Diego was attempting to chase down pray and he tires out, since saber-tooths weren't built for long distance chases; only later in the movie, when he has a kind of adrenaline rush, does he work up the energy to keep pace cause Ellie's in danger.

The tiger thing is extremely nitpicky. While I myself have always preferred to use the term "saber--toothed cat", "saber-tooth tiger" was an extremely common, well, common name for machairodonts like Smilodon back in the 2000s when this movie was made. I don't think anyone ever actually thought that Smilodons were actual tigers, it's just a comparative name. The American lion (P. atrox) and cave lion (P. spelaeus) are both not part of the species P. leo, but I assume you wouldn't fault someone for calling them lions.
