dear Alex, you make it look like a walk in the park but many many thanks for your effort in creating this tutorial. For beginners like me it's pure gold. May I ask, where are you teaching? greetings from Zürich, Dominik

I've taught myself, and I believe (in my case) it's what made it 100% safe (and no, it didn't take 2 years, far less). I bought my kite from ebay, went ALONE in a big empty field, flew the kite till getting real confident, THEN, went in the water, again alone, and started surfing left and right. My Core GTS kite is my girlfriend, she has a name, I take care of her, I make sure she NEVER touches water, if she crashes, my heart crashes with her. I never had an accident or even a close call, until TODAY, and guess what: from A STUDENT WITH AN INSTRUCTOR, who knocked the living day out of me crashing his kite on my head (and no he wasn't wearing yellow or a typical flashy color which I always avoid going near). The reason the accident happend is exactly the problem with kite schools: they want to sell results, and fast. No instructor wants to see a student flying a kite for 50 hours on a field. But sorry, that's what needs to be done, there is no shortcut, if you're not prepared for this, don't show up in the first place! Secondly, the student doesn't own the kite, he is fully insured, and is given third party insurance, meaning, it's field day, he can be as reckless and dangerous as he wants, no worries, if he "unalives" someone, so be it, someone else will pay, if he breakes the kite, so be it, someone else wil fix it... this is what angered me today so much, to be injured by someone who had NO IDEA of kiting, who was given a kite at 20 knots of wind and put in the water amongs 200 other kiters in a very busy spot. The kite was ragdolling him around like a muppet, and the instructor was 100 meters away just watching, not stopping this massacre. My point is: kite school is only as safe as the intellect of its instructor, if YOU CARE about your life MORE than the instructor, stay away from him!

Nicely done. However, an easier foiling footswap technique for newbies would be a 3-steps footswap instead of a 2-steps footswap as follows: 1)Guide your wing up on a broad reach, step the front foot back to the "midpoint" between the original front and back feet, 2) step the back foot to the front foot position and 3) move the "midpoint" foot to the back foot position. With this technique, each foot would only travel half the distance of that of the 2 steps foot swap, and without the climbing and dropping, the board would be more level throughout and thus more stable.

Could you do a video on kites with multiple attachment points on the edge of the kite? E.g., the duo tone evo has three settings on the kite for attachment points, but it’s confusing to understand what they do and how it affects the kite’s performance.

My biggest problem with Wing foil jibes is that I still cut the turn too sharp once I cross downwind and then fall in. My muscle memory from windsurfing jibes always kicks in.. Any tips on getting myself to slow down the jibe and complete the jibe with a wide radius? Any exercises or techniques that I can use to help me keep wider radius throughout the Jibe.. especially after I cross downwind? Thank you for any tips or suggestions

Hello Don. Let me know some more details. Are you doing a heelside stance into toeside stance jibe? And after, do you typically fall off toeside? You probably need to become more aware of and in control of your roll angle. Too much toeside roll (for example in a heelside to toeside jibe) will drop you off the board easily as you shed speed, because you can only keep high roll angles with lots of speed. Practice adjusting your roll while riding, which will make you cave up and downwind. For your first jibes use only a small toeside roll, even if you loose speed you should drop down into a taxi rather than fall off the toeside of the board. You can even reduce that roll in the middle of the jibe but that's a little more difficult to do.

Exercises: lots of S turns until you have good roll control. Then low roll jibes and taxi out.

Another possible cause could be that you may be late powering the wing after the jibe. As you exit a heel to toe jibe, you quickly need the wing's power to balance the small toeside roll that you exit with. Otherwise you will fall off toeside.

I've been teaching myself the art of kiting for a year now. I've started with a 3m trainer kite, that I used for about 40h in varying wind conditions. I've just recently switched to the major leagues with a used 13m. My mindset and approach to it is to put security as paramount, both mine and other's. Right now I'm learning to launch, which has proven difficult and sometimes a bit scary... but never really dangerous. I'm currently learning completely unhooked from the kite, just holding the chicken loop with one hand and the bar with the other. I make sure that if I need to let go of the kite, it will fly into inanimate objects like trees. I've been thinking about tethering my safety leash to a long rope away from me at beam reach to have it not fly far away. This will allow to fly it in large open spaces away from wind shadow. I've been reading, watching tutorials, learning wind conditions and keeping a log book of all my sessions and I'm going to cram all that info until it becomes second nature. Once I can confidently launch and keep a kite up, I plan on getting a class from an expert to help me iron out any errors in my form. I feel like I'm assimilating more efficiently what people teach me if I've already got a grasp of the general flow of things. Having safety as a non-negotiable absolute factor in my mind makes me comfortable to progress alone for the moment, at a slow constant pace. I've been at it for one year and I've barely started using real kite, I don't own a board yet and I've only tried once strapped to the chicken loop. My golden rule is to start every session with safety first and to only slightly push my comfort zone. When the stress starts to become anxiety its time to wrap up and call it a day, sit down and go write about it to solidify what has been learned... and also being absolutely stoked about the progress I've made that day! Stay safe out there, and think with your head, not your emotions.

Another good one I think would be appreciated by viewers to add is the simple aerial foot swap, landing with a gentle down loop, as alternative to jibing

Guys this looks so easy but I did it yesterday in high waves and where you cant stand while trying to not loose my board. Just wrapping the lines around the bar is a nightmare. I had the quick release pulled and the kite still catched wind sometimes. You get tangled up in lines easily. Luckily I could use the kite to drift to the shore.

Great video. Also a useful tip for relaunch kite on deep water which is sticked to the water, is to pull one stearing line and opposite front line for low V. Bend the knees and do some sort of push to avoid dragging. I'm using such technic for my contra 17. Sorry in advance for my English)

Buy foils that have tips that curl up or down. The other day a beginner kiter lost control of her kite, the lines caught my board and flipped on to the wing, if the foil tip would have been straight it would have ripped it to shreds. It is also much safer in the water.

Would you say it’s easier to start with the 360 then tack to toeside? Or the other way around?

@kitesurfcollege Ай бұрын
Hi. The heel to toe tack easier. The foiling 360 is effectively a heelside-to-toeside tack which blends seamlessly into a toeside to heelside downloop transition/jibe. So if you become confident with tacks and DL transitions then you should be able to move on to the 360 after.

My understanding is you need to go downwind a bit to get speed, but if the wind is blowing directly onshore how do you start out? Other than bodydragging upwind is there another way?

Great video! Is this tack easier than "original" tack with stepping over?
@kitesurfcollege
@kitesurfcollege Ай бұрын
Hi Max. When you say original tack I guess you mean a tack starting in heelside with a footswap mid tack so you exit still in heelside. That's a tack commonly used in kite foil racing (in order to keep a powerfup heelside stance as much as possible), I would even call that a race tack or tack footswap rather than just a tack. The tack in this tutorial is the simplest and most fundamental, it's much easier than a racing tack or toe to heel tack.
