Honestly the “death of the mall” thing has always confused me because that hasn’t been my experience at all. I’m at the tail end of millennial in the “zillennial” umbrella and I hung out at the mall all the time in high school, so did tons of my classmates. I’ve visited it consistently since graduating high school too, and if anything I’ve noticed teenagers and young people broadly consistently hanging out there. I don’t even live in a “nothing to do” area either, I’m in the suburb of a major city that has easy public transit access to the city proper.

Yeah, not all malls fail, but some do. I think because I am in San Antonio, although we have lost malls here, we have a couple that are going strong. Maybe because of having a huge population? Not sure. Thanks for commenting 🤙

In an era when you have choice about how you want to shop, malls have a strong appeal to a specific age group. Gen Z are currently that age group. But malls lost all the other age groups that are no longer _forced_ to go to the mall, so the number of malls will shrink until they match their customer base (there were already too many in the 2000s and we knew it). They won't go extinct, but don't expect them to be more than a shadow of what they used to be.

i hate shopping at the mall simply because they dont have anything cool most of the time i like retro games, vhs tapes and other vintage things like vinyl records etc. im a nerd and like pop culture but the way pop culture is marketed nowadays at stores like hot topic is cringe just really bad designs bastardizing classic media giving "exercise i thought you said extra fries" vibes. as for new stuff i like outerwear and expensive sneakers but good luck finding specialty items like nike sb dunks in your size with the color way you want or the whole catalog of patagonia clothing for the year

at 47 looking back at my parents and my adult neighbors in general. Boomers were the most crybaby lazy complaining over sensitive eared generation ever. every problem with kids was solved with a belt. if the wife got out of line she got hit also. push you outside and lock the door behind you till the street lights came on. Play videos games while parents slept but if mario got to many coins (atari we didn't have nintendo) a even at 5% volume it was turn that crap off and go outside from the other side of the house... ... got given a shotgun at 10 and told to watch my younger sister shoot anyone that tried to get through the door. got in trouble at school at 8 or 9 years old had to walk home a few miles for a week of course it rains EVERY day and it was my fault the carpet got wet ...the walk was no big deal till u get to the 1950s high ass bridge that was not made for people wider than 2 feet to walk on with those 1980s pickup truck mirrors hanging half way into the sidewalk maps.app.goo.gl/uiAjmjXArN2Xfp2dA . Had to hear about how when im their age I would understand how hard life is and how expensive things are ... i am 47 with a huge skillset make less than dad with a small skill set did adjusted to inflation have twice the house twice the cars and i STILL can afford to sit on my porch with the front door open and a/c on just because I fing can after hearing about air conditioning the world SO MANY times as a kid for having to come home and poop. Now that I'm older now than dad was then with my own kids and budget He must have drank an incredible amount of alcohol to be "broke" with his income vs expenses... Had to mow grass with a mower without an engine and the neighbors tree put down these acron things that clogged the wheel mower blades every 3 feet again and again then get yelled at for not getting it done. Then be forced to eat food so nasty like beats that it would cause an involuntary action to vomit then get sent to home without supper . To this day i have an eating disorder i eat way to much. see i ate like a pig the 3 nights a week they served editable food. I couldn't touch dads soda as that was all for his mixed drinks only. NOW i may sound like i am being a cry baby or had an abusive father .Nah every male child i knew my age had similar stories.. Boomers had it all were still hateful. Yes GenX is tough , because most of us have shared trauma. Look at the other comments . walked myself in kindergarten, when kidnappers were around take a different route , back playing in the same place next day after an attempted kidnapping no cops called , parents doing coke during parties..... GenX is tough because the weak ones all died. We don't care because we were sandwiched between a careless over entitled generation and a generation that had no idea what trauma actually is was a generation got meds for adhd instead of a belt. If you charged parents back then with today's laws in a year they would rack up a life sentence worth of criminal abuse charges .

As a Gen X'er I find it so fasinating that younger Generations are going through these buildings as if they are/were ancient ruins... Most of the time people go though old structures to which no one is alive who made them... Yet I remember malls as a huge part of my childhood and now I watch these "DEAD MALL" series and can't wrap my head around it.. I miss the malls and they were huge for meeting people etc... I don't really have a point other than what the heck happened?
@radgraham3 күн бұрын
@inclusivemodeldesigns16 yeah I wonder myself. Yes, the advent of the internet, and social media hurt a lot of industries. As time went on people are starting to wake up and actually crave human interaction again. Malls will never be the SPOT like they were when we were kids but I think they can still make it as entertainment hubs, eateries, and places to meet up, but it's more of an event to do it now. 🤙🤙

LOVE the filter you used that made it look like old-school VHS tape video! I used to miss hanging out at mall's like we used to do back in the day, but for me it's just not the same anymore. It was probably more about the people I was hanging out with than the location itself. Best thing about malls was that they were indoors so if weather was bad outside - no big deal. Hang at the mall, hit the arcade and food court and you could waste a day (and a week's allowance!) easily.
