Perhaps the best "Baby Tenryu 32TA" episode yet on very good sized Cutthroat for that tiny creek!!! I had to watch the vid a few times, as the Glock on chest holster stole the show. Every time you bent down to reach the trout I anticipated your Bear protection taking the plunge. LOL. Excellent video. 4 hours hard hiking territory to cover 2 miles insane, rewarded with the hidden treasure of absolutely beautiful native Cutthroat trout!!! Nice Kris.

That was a level line about the length of the rod at its longest length. We were using a soft hackle wet fly, unweighted. That Rod is somewhat expensive and depends on the exchange rate with Japan. I’m not sure what it cost right now you could check PLAT or Tenkara-ya

Tenkara Tenryu Three Musketeers!!! Kris viewers can appreciate your video capturing the casting action and flex thru out the fight of that Tenryu Furaibo TF32TA. Can I ask were you all fishing at the rods full length 3.2 Meter ( 10'.49") setting thru out the video footage? Did ya fish the whole time with the Red Ass Monkey , or switch up to another kebari? I have the Coco Blue 290 but had trouble deciding on which Nissin Oni to buy - the Nissin Oni 295 or the Nissin Oni 345 - so I'm thinking the Nissin Oni 345. What are your thoughts? Comparing the 295 with the 345, what are your thoughts? You have both. Tom Davis only reviewed the 345. Fred
@tenkaraonthetrail
@tenkaraonthetrail 23 күн бұрын
Well there is a lot of overlap between the Coco 290 and the Oni 295 if you’re looking to spread things out a little bit the 345 is a wonderful Rod. I did a lot of fishing with that recently and I love that length. If you are completely happy with the Coco 290 then I would go with the longer 345.

Great set of 3 videos, Kris! I want to echo your findings--I LOVE both of these rods, and while the Coco is tip flexy and the 295 is more full flex--the biggest, most notable difference is definitely the grip. I've ordered some cork and am going to try to fashion a cork grip for the Coco and see what I think.
@VicBranker
@VicBranker 23 күн бұрын
Kris very thorough analyses. Factored down to the essence of your review, I opine you basically concur with Masami Sakakibara Oni's thought process. The introduction of the ONI 295 & 345 filled the vacuum amidst the pre-existent Oni rod product line. Within the 3 meter class rods, the Oni 295 is a Tenkara rod proper, it's earlier released "older sibling" 290 Coco (blue or pink) a Seiryu rod. Tenkara vs. Seiryu rod both Oni 100% Classic in design and reputation. No play on words here; Oni rods!!! Are you kidding? Arguably the finest Japanese Tenkara rods made. Final rod selection will be made solely upon the obsessive compulsive mental state aka subjective taste of the angler. ( Buyer beware, either one, you can't lose). My 2 cents worth anyway, thanks.
@michaelcapurso
@michaelcapurso 23 күн бұрын
Love your informational videos, great service to your viewers, thank you! With regard to the 295, would it be an appropriate choice for bead head nymphs in smaller fairly fast water? Also, knowing the lengths are not the same how would you rate the 295 to the Traveler 27 with regard to capability. The Oni seems like a great little rod, however I can't get past the colors, strange choices unless it's geared to children.
@tenkaraonthetrail
@tenkaraonthetrail 23 күн бұрын
That’s a good question regarding the traveler 27. As a Keiryu Rod, it feels like it has more backbone but it is shorter like you noted. The 295 has a higher tippet rating but I don’t put too much stock in those. I would only be hazarding a guess and I think it would be splitting hairs to say which one is more capable. I don’t have a penny reading for the 295. I’ve caught or seen fish caught in the mid teens with both of those rods. They just do it in a different way. The 295 has a deep smooth bend and the 27 feels like it has stronger mid and lower sections. As far as bead heads yes the 295 handled them fine for me.

I’m not trying to be a disrespectful person here… my intentions are good Kris… I’d love to know more about your sub life and how they connect to your interest in Tenkara… my suspicion is that your technical expertise in the nuclear power systems and navigation would lend itself to your research into a Japanese water based sport such as Tenkara/Keiryu/Seiryu… because of the Germanic attention to detail that the Japanese have within the micro realm of materials management in manufacturing and pure focus on subtraction of noise within initial design concepts… in British Columbia where I reside there is a healthy respect for Craftsman Architecture that clearly derives from Japanese design in as much that it strips away elaborate French frills in favour or the fundamentals of the design structure and intention of the end result that the Rod provides when complimentary line(s) and fly are tantalising the fish’s instinct So yes your direct path to these fishing, hunting and backpacking disciplines would be facilitating. Nice video. Someday I’m going to find where this creek is you are always doing your small rod reviews and comparisons on. It looks amazing and appears to have a good trout population. We were camped “off grid” in southern Colorado on the Cimarron River for the last 2 weeks. Right where they filmed the final scenes of the old version(John Wayne) of the movie True Grit. Finally got a chance to spend some time really fishing my Oni Style Coco rod for many, many hours on a smaller, brushy banked creek(East Fork & Middle Fork Cimarron Rivers. I’m a fan. Yes I wish the handle was a little thicker for my big mitts but at a weight of UNDER ONE OUNCE it’s not a “problem”. The only other “complaint” I have is it’s a baby blue colored rod. Well, baby blue is better than your other color choice: pink! Pretty sure Mr. Sakakibara let his wife “Coco” have a little more input on this rod than just the name! 🤔🤷🏻‍♂️😁 All that said it’s a sweet rod for sure! Only had a couple incidences when I hooked a couple trout above 12” and in some fast water. Exciting but still landed em.
