Great decision mate! The very structure of that rock has not had any pressure changes since it broke loose last time 😊 we do the same when splitting oak logs here at Sandefjord, Norway 👌

This is awesome, ive bee cutting all my stone with a quick cut. Just bought some feather and wedges, will have to give it a shot soon, lots of granite at the cabin!

Yeah right,,, It does not take many minutes of beatings in that granite slab with state of the art tool steel before certain told doctrinal "truths" becomes evidently.... say, flaw. Egyptians, allegedly equipped with Copper Chisels rigid as chewing gum, handheld beating stones and a bit of sand for grind to polish perfectly smooth glass shine finishes, would not stand a chance of making a small dent. Pretty far, from making perfectly shaped modern xyz machine equal or better, 3D statue midplane suface mirrored geometries and whatever else they did in granite, in such fashions as claimed by our todays "better educated".

I would have had concern about the shear strength of the bolts, and also the small size (20T) of the jack compared to the weight of the block. Assuming Black Granite of 5'x5'x15' you would be looking at about 38 Tons. I would have possibly made 2 more mounts and with a second jack bolted at the top far end thereby added to my leverage. Also I would have a 3' length of steel pipe to use as an extension bar for the jack handle. That way if something snaps I would be a little further away. I use a hand siphon pump with a hose to blow out my drill holes on the slabs in my woods.

When I was a kid a stone mason hammer and a star drill was about the only method available for the do it yourself handyman. You could build some good muscles sinking a few holes in thick granite.

At long last, Ive been looking for someone with a hand drill, no one believed me when I tell them I built and put up a car port using one, as we had no access to electricity, I was starting to think it was all a dream lol, it was 35 years ago, the tool was amazing, only 8mm as it was the size we needed, but it was so fast.

How do you decide when to use the Mason's chipper vs the hand set? It was interesting to see which tools you use. I have a small collection of Trow & Holden tools that I'm still learning to use correctly.

I live in Calgary Alberta and id really like to learn stone masonry. There is not many people here that do it and the ones that can teach are prohibitively expensive. So I just start hitting rocks trying to shape them but it's not very conducive to learning quickly. I will be a landscape horticulture journeyman next year and would like to use masonry in my landscape design. Where should I find someone to teach me affordably?

Very interesting video! Since I know nothing about rock splitting, I would have thought that the split happens as soon as you finish hammering, but that's not the case. You had to wait for the tension on the rock to be released! I was also surprised that you drilled first, but that's very much quicker than "carving out" the holes, then to place the wedges in after. And to use very thin drill bits, but you are trying to not make wider marks in the gorgeous stone. Well done! Every day's a school day!

Absolutly fascinating what you can do with "hand tools". Insane project. Inspires me to tackle some of the huge boulders on my land. Have you considered dropping something in the cracks. So that when you wedge it open it drops down further keeping the crack open?
