I think the answer to why Nate is following in Sir Francis Drake’s footsteps is in Uncharted 4. He and Sam were picking up their dead mother’s work, and finishing *her* legacy - not Drake’s. The historical figure could have been anybody.

All the title tells me is that u misinterpret the role Nathan Drake plays in the games, he was NEVER meant to be the hero, and all the people he killed/murdered doesn't make him a villain either. He is a treasure hunter and unnaturally lucky. all the situations he finds himself in are made to make him look cool, not a heroic endeavor. Nathan just wants to be the best version of himself and because of his line of work, he has to get his hands dirty. Keep in mind all the people he has killed or fought back against are ALL murderers, none of them are good people either so how does that make Drake a villain candidate, he defended himself EVERY time, no senseless killing

@@Moonking7 Nate's kill count is almost never mentioned in the video. I'm talking about something a little different from what you are. Consider when Chole says, in Uncharted 2, "you don't always have to play the bloody hero", or when Nate also says, "I'm done playing the hero" etc.

@@natedansereau I forgot to mention, this is purely just that the title (imo) misinterprets the characters role in the story, I'm not implying that the contents of the video match the title, but the title could mislead people into thinking that he was supposed to be thought of as a hero, and thank you for actually giving some evidence instead of the classic rage-filled response most people would spew, good day to you. I recall Toad is supposed to be his best friend, if not it is Yoshi. Mario does need to rescue the Toad Retainers. Isn't just Mario but Luigi is there as well, people often neglect the Bros. part of the game. When it comes to Peach rescuing Peach and Mario haven't met since they were young. The enemies aren't usually trying to kill Mario. Bowser isn't a dragon.
@natedansereau
@natedansereau Ай бұрын
@@Eris1987 "dragon" could be a biological classification, like turtle or homo sapien. You could argue that fire breathing turtle is very dragon like in this sense but it's certianly up for debate. Alternatively, "dragon" could be more of a literary trope/ classification. In this second sense, bowser is 100% a dragon
@Eris1987
@Eris1987 Ай бұрын
@natedansereau in universe and in descriptions Bowser is only ever called a turtle and I have found a lack of anything about him being a dragon in any source, let alone described as dragon-like. It is a thing that mostly comes from the fan community. Bowser is well a turtle and falls under this categorization alongside other turtles within the Mario world. Koopas(NokoNokos not Koopas), Spikes, Spinys, Bros., Lakitus, Buzzy Beetles, Sea Turtles, etc. Meanwhile in-universe the word dragon is applied to well actually dragons like the Hooktail. In addition it is applied to Yoshies and Dorrie. Note Yoshi is a dinosaur and Dorrie is a marine reptile distantly related to dinosaurs. Yoshies can't breath fire unless they eat a Red Shell in SMB4SMW or eat a Magic Flower. Yoshies also don't have wings either unless they use a power-up or eat a Blue Shell in SMB4SMW. Dorries don't fly or breathe fire. So dragon in the Mario world is a broad term that refers to various reptiles, but isn't applied to turtles.

Well, duh! Did we all play the same game? So of course, Nate is not a hero. He's always been an anti hero more or less in my mind. Most of what he does is for his own self interest. The guy or his friends have broken so many society laws, got others civilians killed and killed so many people regardless they are bad or not. It should not be that all surprising to anyone playing an Uncharted game. When you're treasure hunter for self interest, you're bound to be doing lot of illegal stuff and getting into, "kill or be kill!" situations over it. Lol.

@@natedansereau considering that she's left without the use of one hand as well as everyone she ever cared about and that cared for her after forgiving Abby, I'd say she would be much better off if she put down the sadistic maniac as soon as she had the chance. It's funny how the entire plot is contrived in order to justify her forgiving the woman who murdered her guardian in cold blood and it still is unable to make it a sensible or satisfying outcome. The entire game shouldn't have been made to begin with, since the ending of the original game was ambiguous enough on the surface to facilitate meaningful discourse, while the objective assessment still held up with both character motivations and logical cause and effect. This game insists upon one reading and one reading only: "violence is cyclical, revenge is empty, now go murder hundreds of faceless goons just to let the one character we have a meaningful conflict with live because the theme demands it." and any disputing of this is disregarded as "lacking media literacy" or "just being upset it wasn't something you wanted", etc.
@natedansereau
@natedansereau Ай бұрын
@kodybuffettwilson hmmm. She left without the (full) use of one hand as well as everyone else she cared about after killing like 100 people, including an unborn baby. She probably still has to make up for that on some level (and Abby still would have fought back and bit her hand if Ellie had finished the job). Maybe Abby "deserves" to die (whatever that means) but does Lev deserve to lose someone? If Abby deserves all that after killing one guy, what does Ellie deserve after what she did in the game? I find these questions to be alot more interesting than what most videogames can muster. Plus story aside, this is one of the funnest, most intense games I've ever played. It's okay if you don't like it, I don't think you lack media literacy or anything. The main reason I responded to your comment is because I value forgiveness so much. I think forgiveness is a very powerful, beautiful thing, that takes great emotional strength and courage to use. Ellie will only be better off in the long run, by beginning to actually process and move on from her anger.
@kodybuffettwilson
@kodybuffettwilson Ай бұрын
@@natedansereau I understand forgiveness can be a compelling theme, but it wasn't executed well here, mainly because Neil Druckmann and his yes-men are hateful people who deliberately undermined the meaning and appeal of the original game because they prioritized their own hackneyed execution of a "mature theme" over a well-written story or characters.
@natedansereau
@natedansereau Ай бұрын
@@kodybuffettwilson can I just offer that you started this conversation, not by saying anything about poor execution or storytelling, but that certain characters did or didn't need forgiveness. Don't you think that if the story really was so bad, or the characters not compelling, you just wouldn't care who forgives what? Doesn't your (and mine and others') strong opinion about the moral issues presented in the story, demonstrate (that unlike many games) the themes have successfully made an emotional impact? He's a hero in spite of his flaws, that was always the point. Druckmann never got that which is why he tries to belittle and subvert Drake's character in 4 after the original lead writer left. Anything you do in life will be a story after it's over. Drake made his story epic, a modern day legend, so trying to diminish it by pointing out he also ran a business and had a peaceful life on a beach is nothing but trying to pull his character down. People incapable of greatness want to impose mediocrity on those who accomplish. The villain in 4 wasn't right, he was just petty in the face of someone he'd never be. Nathan Drake is a hero no matter how many people try to tear him down.

@RyanJSmith
@RyanJSmith 2 ай бұрын
@@natedansereau I'm moreso critical of the direction of the storytelling than your video. I do see and appreciate the celebration and discussion. The neutrality does fall away in agreeing with 4's villain. His view is reductive and demeaning of Nate's accomplishments out of his spite. I'd say it's an example of a writer having the villain voice their views (like Kylo Ren's "let the past die..." line) and in this case is a challenge point for the audience. You agreeing is where you go from discussion to assessment. It's fair if your assessment is different to mine, it's inevitable given 4's dichotomous nature, it's just that if I had a 30 minute celebration of Drake the title would proclaim him a hero.
