My rule of thumb about buying records is: if it is priced at a rate that you'd not want to pay, then you haven't really found it. You can go online and buy almost any record you want these days, but do you really want to pay those extortionate prices? You've found that record when it turns up unexpected for a few quid in a place you'd never expect to find it. I'd love to get Motley Crue's Dr. Feelgood album on vinyl, but I'm not going to fork out £30+ for it. The CD will do fine until it pops up at a car boot sale for a fiver one sunny day in the future.

I've just ordered Another Green World, as I really wanted it on vinyl but have never found a decent copy, so you inspired me to purchase James!. A Walk Across The Rooftops is a melancholy masterpiece, I just love the atmosphere. I have an 80s pressing of Physical Grafitti, 70s pressings are stupid prices and not usually in great nick, particularly given the delicate die cut sleeve. I have a recent pressingvof Tago Mago and it sounds great, which I guess is a testament to not only the pressing plant but also the fact it was brilliantly mastered first time around. Great idea for a video James.

Good stuff, James. I am of the same mindset in that I have nothing against CDs, so if I have an album on CD I'd only buy it on vinyl if I found an affordable original version. I do like the sleeves you're using in place of jewel cases. There's an affordable recent reissue of Catch a Fire on Tuff Gong - the Jamaican version - that is NOT adulterated. I've got a copy and it's quite good. Worth seeking out. I hope all is well! Cheers, Tom

I've been meaning to upload a video in regards to owning multiple versions of the same album for a while now, so I might pull my finger out and get a video on this subject made soon. Thanks James

I restrict my CD buying to Deep Purple and related only. I do have about 100 CDs, but the rest went to the charity shop a couple of years ago. The only CD I have that I wish I had on vinyl was one of your choices; maggot brain. Nice idea for a video James. Cheers, Chris

Lately I find myself buying reissues of records I have originals of bcs, some are just too scratched up unfortunately. Played my OG Hounds of Love the other day and it´s due a replacement. Will give it an ultrasonic cleaning, but don´t have much hope it´ll get much better, so maybe a cd next. Good topic James.

I keep saying that I am not going to buy something on vinyl that I also have on CD but I haven't lived up to that challenge. I've said that I will only double dip for my favorite artists but I fall off the wagon often and I think the VC is an enabler. I have all of The Doors album on CD and I have somehow resisted buying their catalog on vinyl. I only have Ragged Glory, Physical Graffiti and Catch A Fire on CD. I didn't have much of a purge when I got into CD's but I do have two big regrets in that I sold my early vinyl copies of Physical Graffiti and The Beatles White Album and have yet to replace them on vinyl. I do have the rest of Led Zeppelin on vinyl. Interesting topic that hit close to home.

Hi, James, a suggestion: what about another 'top X'-video, about the best singles in your private collection? I know you did one about your singles a few years ago, but didn't rank them. In my humble view, the single is THE magic format for classic rock, soul, pop. Up to this day, to me putting a single on the turntable is a precious moment. Moreover, the single is underrated sonically: for most classic rock songs it's the definite version, loads better than acoustically 'cleaned' or stereophonized versions that came out later. Unpolished sound, distortion, over-emphasized bass were means of artistic expression. For one definite single-version, 555 takes were thrown away.

Great suggestion, I will definitely see about doing that video in the new year. Thanks!

I too have no hate for cd and because of the 90's I have a substantial collection of them. I still purchase cds today because the price comparison to its vinyl counterpart can be a huge difference. If you own an above average well made cd player which has a decent to upper end DAC then CD's will sound smooth and detailed not harsh and bright. SHMC CD's are amazing and beat vinyl all day long , but they have a larger price tag than regular CD's , the sound rivals any remaster vinyl, I own about 6-8 now. Paul McCartney reissued a large part of his back catalog and newer items on these amazing Japanese SHMC discs and even his new One Hand Clapping is released on this format, which I had chosen to buy over vinyl for half the price. Oh and I do not normally repurchase vinyl when I own the cd, I have mastered the art of talking myself out of it at least in 85% of the time. Cheers 🥂.

Time to ‘fess up. I sold all my vinyl in 1988 and have amassed over 2,000 CDs since. I couldn’t fit all that music on vinyl into the house and stay married! I bought a turntable about 12 years ago and bought 30 of my favourite albums. I played a few, couldn’t see the point and never connected the turntable up when I upgraded the rest of my system. I really like CD box sets which really work well. One more point. I listen to. A lot of music in the car so the first thing I do when I buy a CD is copy it into iTunes. Now to try to restore some credibility: I saw The Blue Nile live at Birmingham Symphony Hall.

Thanks Michael...each to their own when it comes to music formats for sure. I like having a combination of vinyl and CDs, though got rid of cassettes a long time ago! Wow, amazing you got to see The Blue Nile.

I have a three of those on vinyl but not on cd. Zeppelin, Kate Bush, Velvets. I'm at the same situation as you with Bob Marley, would love to get the zippo cover of it. I would have plenty of records only on cd, need to think about it. Funnily just as i was about to release my new video on my latest cd purchases your video popped up. Had to watch it right away. Pasi

"Classic" albums are mostly ones I'm happy to have on CD, but if I come across them cheap I'll pick them up. That's probably because I lean towards iconoclasm.

I think Mutations is my fvourite Beck album. I have what seems like an antire shelf of Can CDs, but none of vinyl. I should fix that 🙃 I've been looking for Blue Nile records for years. I bought the Hounds of Love shortly after it came out. I'm glad I did, because the price on that one here is really high. A few things albums to me while watcing this video!

Like the idea of this video James. It'll take some thought. There are obviously still quite a few albums that have never seen a vinyl release unfortunately, but there are also lots from the 90s and early 2000s particularly which saw only a limited vinyl release at the time and have never been reissued - the Richard Thompson al umbrella from that period being obvious examples. Despite owning an album on CD I will still try and get it on vinyl, even if it's only a recent reissue. But the question is what do you do with the CD in such cases? Sadly I am one of those people who will keep both formats! Cheers...Pete PS I sent an email to you recently (at least I hope it was to you) - did you see it? Trying to pass on some vinyl to favourit VCers.

I recently purchased a quality ladder DAC to complement my CD transport and I no longer pine for vinyl vs. CD. Either format will do but my eyesight suffers reading the CD info 😊

hi james.. so a few weeks back i thought i'd buy a digital audio player, i'd been looking for one for a while that i could hook up to my sony amp, anyway i settled on one, and started to flac my cd collection.. i'd mp3'd it a few years ago, but felt since the DAP read flac files and i had a 256gig sdcard, why not. having gone through my entire collection i found about 5% of my cd's had cd-rot and as a result were unable to be converted to flac format or even played.. this is a bit of cautionary tale.. back up your collection before it's too late. on a side note: kate bush - the red shoes is a fantastic album..
@jamesgriffithsmusic11 сағат бұрын
CD-rot, that sound scary. Thanks for the tip Baz, I will have to start going through my CDs and having a look. Who'd have thought CDs would rot eh?

Ah, Maggot Brain and the first couple of Parliament albums have always eluded me on vinyl, don't even have them on CD actually. Kept holding out hope of coming across a vintage used copy but it's just not going to happen is it. No Can at all in my collection, I'd never even heard of them before jumping on here to be honest. The adulterated nature of Catch A Fire is a bit of a (possibly deliberate) modern misconception, as the familiar overdubbed release on Island was always intended to be the one and only version, with the so-called "Jamaican mix" being created by engineer Errol Brown for the 2001 Deluxe CD edition (which I've owned since new) by removing the UK overdubs - marketed ever since as some sort of lost original edition. At least that's my current understanding. I'm consciously doubling down on getting things on both vinyl and CD when possible these days, the best of both worlds and the CD or digital isn't a major additional cost in most cases. Cheers!
@jamesgriffithsmusic11 сағат бұрын
I didn't actually know there was a Jamaican mix of CAF...now I'm intrigued. Good to hear I'm not alone in pursuing both the CDs and the records!
@FatCityVinyl10 сағат бұрын
@ Well…there kind of isn’t, what’s sometimes called the Jamaican mix is a later recreation of what that might have sounded like if it had existed…far as I am aware, the original Jamaican pressing of the LP was just the same as the international Island version. Having the CD definitely has its advantages, but still feels a bit unsatisfying on its own without the vinyl, for reasons I can’t quite work out!
