I can’t imagine how you make it all work with every panel bending in two directions and the fit of each one dependent its neighbor. I can see that accuracy has become more important as you have progressed and it really shows. There’s a couple of times I thought I was looking at a factory built plane until I saw your garage in the background. It looks great!

A couple of times while searching for that perfect picture I need that’s deep within the bowels of the internet, I will stumble upon a picture of mine and get really excited about finding a new picture of a B-36 before I realize what’s going on.

The ceiling panels are probably aluminum. They couldn't use magnesium in any pressurized section as it would fatigue to easily.
@B36HPeacemaker
@B36HPeacemaker 2 күн бұрын
That’s an excellent point, however these internal panels I am building may be magnesium where the external are aluminum. Either way, I don’t have any magnesium to work with.

Really enjoy your project. Maybe work out your frustrating compound curving shapes in cardboard and tape first? Keep up the great work.

For some reason I always assume making these shapes is going to be easy. After I failed with the original piece of steel I then made a cardboard pattern which resulted in what’s up there now. Around the first of the year I will have an english wheel.

I have a question, have you ever visited this crash site? RB-36 H-25 Peacemaker Crash Nut Grove, Newfoundland, Canada March 18, 1953 I think there would be a treasure trove of B-36 parts even though it's been picked over for 70 plus years If you Google RB-36 crash, Nut Grove, Newfoundland, Canada, (which you have probably already done many times) . The pictures taken from the site, show a lot of large pieces, especially the nose and cockpit section. Keep up the great work, its been fun watching you build it.

So the ring is made by rolling a rectangular cross section tube?
@B36HPeacemaker
@B36HPeacemaker 10 күн бұрын
The outer ring is 2.250” tall. The top of the ring is made from 1x1” square tubing. Where the remaining 1.250” is an ‘L’ shape all the way around. So, the cross section is a square on top of a backwards L.

“Most of the plane is still there” is bit of a stretch, as I feel there may be 20% at best. I’ve studied every photograph I’ve been able to find of that site over the years. With a picture of a small surviving potion of the flight deck be most helpful.

Amazing work and looks great. The best I can see from photos, they started building astrodomes on the B models somewhere between 057 and 067, around the last 40 of the B’s. I laughed when I read in one of the manuals the difficult and multi-step procedure to set up the compass in the astrodome - ending with something like: “you might consider just using one of the gun sight blisters”.

Here in my hometown, we have a B-47E on static display. Volunteers have been working to restore it for the last five summers or so and a couple of years ago, opened up the tail turret for restoration. The Air Force had removed the twin 20mm so the guys fabricated a pair of exact replicas, complete with recoil springs, etc. Definitely neat to see the inner workings on these.

What is all the particulate floating around? Was asbestos or other hazardous insulation used?
@B36HPeacemaker
@B36HPeacemaker 27 күн бұрын
I have seen nothing in the crew compartments that would raise concern of the presence of asbestos. The insulation that I have encountered is pink fiberglass. It’s possible there may be some in the electrical wires but they aren’t being disturbed and are (for the most part) rubberized and or coated.

I know you’re not interested in a simulator, but I hope someone will capture all the details with photographs and photogrammetry. Then digitize all those details into a virtual replica which can fly and fully function, authentically, in a simulation like DCS. It would require some virtual (A.I.) crew members; but also, several human crew members could participate via the Internet. That would take a handful of model developers a few years+ to create. That’s the only way to experience the operation of this amazing machine…and in VR, 3D, as if you were actually in one.

Ever think about bringing a 12" ruler, or perhaps a small measuring tape? Something to just quickly place against key details? Often I watch and try to guess the size of things but it's hard to know because the distance between the object and the camera changes often. I'd guess the museum staff would not be difficult about it.
@B36HPeacemaker
@B36HPeacemaker 29 күн бұрын
The only real details I was after is what lives behind the rudder pedals. I was also interested in what things were made of and my questions were answered. For example, I always thought the pilot’s coaming was fiberglass where in reality it’s plastic. I’m pretty much beyond needing measurements at this point, with very little exception.

Could you make a review of the parts from the real B-36 you got in backround? Like the gunner position, turret, and more. Would be interesting! Also are those parts from the B-36 from Soplata's collection?
