Alcohol is the best at extracting the medicinal properties but you can use food-grade glycerin instead to avoid alcohol. I'd say for kids, maybe elderberry syrup though? You can make it in a day rather than waiting 8 weeks. Just don't include honey in the syrup if they're under 1 year old :)

How do they form the Bea bread into the little pellets?
@documentingsimpleliving
@documentingsimpleliving 3 ай бұрын
Hey, so the shape comes from the shape of the honeycomb. Bee bread is a fermented mixture of pollen grains, nectar, bee saliva, and honey. Worker bees collect fresh pollen from flowers on their hind legs and mix it with their saliva and nectar to create a dough-like substance and then the bees pack this mixture into the honeycomb cells and seal them with a layer of honey and wax!

Is there any expiration date to the tinctures with plant material? I once heard a well known Herbalist say y doesn’t matter how long it sits there in the vodka since it won’t go rancid. I have echinacea tincture that’s been sitting there for at least four years and haven’t used it.
@documentingsimpleliving
@documentingsimpleliving 3 ай бұрын
Hey, alcohol-based tinctures generally have a super long shelf life if the plant material has been kept below the alcohol. As long as it has been stored in a cool, dark place and there are no signs of spoilage (like an off smell or mould) it should be fine!

I ended up making my elderberry tincture with apple cider vinegar because of my grandchildren. I used dried elderberries. I have a couple more weeks before im ready to extract the berries. Can I add cinnamon sticks, cloves or honey to taste??
@documentingsimpleliving
@documentingsimpleliving 3 ай бұрын
You could add the tincture dosage to a cup of tea or glass of water to dilute the taste of the vinegar - but if you want to add cinnamon sticks, cloves, and honey, I'd recommend making elderberry syrup instead of a tincture. Add the dried elderberries to a saucepan alongside the cinnamon and cloves (you can also add dried rosehips if you have some). Cover everything with double the amount of water you want to end up with and simmer until 1/2 the water has evaporated. Allow it to cool a bit and then strain it off and add honey to help preserve the syrup and to sweeten it. I hope this helps x

@@zoekellysyouniverse I dry the plants for a day or two to reduce water content then finely chop them up. Fill the jar about eighty percent or so with chopped up plants and fill the jar with 100 proof vodka covering the plants until liquid is just below the rim of the jar. Put some parchment paper over the jar opening and screw on the lid. The paper helps protect the lid from the corrosive properties of the alcohol. Give a shake and shake it every few days for eight weeks. I like 100 proof because it is 50/50 alcohol and water which draws out both alcohol and water soluble components. Strain and use a dropper full or two as needed for pain. It will make some people drowsy.
