I don’t agree. The slower the metals of your engine expand and contract the better, especially with cast block aluminum heads. The less cold starts the better, less chance of your gaskets leaking and the block not warping. Not saying let it idle forever but when it’s cold give it a few minutes, that’s why you could easily drive a million miles all highway

It’s not just for the oil, you should know that “certified mechanic”. For all of the engine components to seat and seal properly the engine should be warm enough for the surfaces of the components to expand. Vehicles use aluminum blocks now and much more efficient oil passages / nozzles. The oil will heat incredibly fast and begin doing its job almost immediately after starting the vehicle as long as the RPM’s are not increased and tolerances get tighter. Nice try though there bud!

I drive a ford fusion with a quarter million miles on it. Been crashed 4 times totaled twice. Original motor. Bought it 6 years ago with 170000 on it. I dont think ive ever let my car warm up before driving unless its too cold to get in gear. Transaxle calls for 80w90 gear oil lol real pain in the ass when its super cold. Those duratec 2.3L are sturdy engines.

Someone doesn't understand the numbers on the oil bottle.. when its too thick it doesnt flow as it should. Therefore oil not getting into the places it needs to fast enough especially ehen you hit higher rpms the oil demand goes up its like forcing cold syrup out of the bottle nozzle vs warm syrup not only does pressure matter but so doesn't flow.

Low Speed Pre-ignition. If you want to destroy your engine prematurely, then by all means, follow this guys advice.. But, if you have a GDI, which is most vehicles these day, doing this will fuck up your car. You don't need 10 or 30 mins, but 3-7 mins, around there, especially around 0-20 degrees is DEFINITELY recommended. #1. Modern cars have smaller parts that the oil NEEDS to reach. #2. Gaskets and seals perform BETTER when they're warmed up. #3. You'll be protecting your engine, especially if you use the highway fairly quickly on your wya to work. Think about it...going from a coldish engine and then forcing it (even gently) to warm up is asinine....🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦
@SEsGarage
@SEsGarage Күн бұрын
Low speed pre ignition has nothing to do with letting your car warm up. It has to do with turbo direct injected vehicles and carbon build up due to improper oil type/fuel octane. If anything LSPI is more likely to happen on a HOT engine due to hot spots in the combustion chamber. Yes, modern cars have tighter tolerances, but they also use THINNER OIL (0W, 5W) which allows the oil to flow better to those tighter places even when cold. I’ve never seen an oil leak that goes away when the engine is warm so I’m not sure where you’re getting your information about hot gaskets performing better when hot. If that were the case all of our cars would hemorrhage oil and coolant before they reach operating temperature. This isn’t the 1960’s. The ONLY thing you’re doing by letting your engine idle extended periods of time is creating more carbon build up-especially in DI vehicles like you mention. Which WILL increase the likelihood of LSPI Go ahead and read your owners manual. I GUARANTEE you the language used in the manual to warm your car up is inline with what I’ve mentioned here!

When I was 20 years old long time ago, I bought a Acura Integra with 100,000 miles on it. Every winter day I warmed it up sometimes for 20 minutes or 30 minutes drove the car till 250,000 miles. The engine never took any oil, never leaked any oil, never gave me any problems. I didn’t replace anything on that car other than fluids filters and brakes. At the same time some of my friends got in their vehicles, ice cold and drove them dead cold to warm up and has oil leaks and other issues. All Japanese cars done bought brand new. I do believe in warming up the car, been doing it ever since, never had any problems all cars went well over 100,000 miles, even brand new ones. Everybody has their own experience and opinions.

From my side the argument for not letting the car idle longer is mostly about the environment. Also there is much confusion about what is an extended idle some think of secs and some think of minutes. For me somewhere between 20sec to 1 min is enough, mostly for the transmission not the engine. If we all adhere to limiting idle time then we will do a lot better for our environment.

Modern oils flow and lubricant just fine when cold as long as you're using the correct viscosity range for your geographical location. If anything it's the transmission that is more temperamental. I personally would always let my car warm up because I don't like a cold car, I want to be comfortable from the minute I get in with my coffee. I live in Florida now so it's a problem I no longer deal with, enjoy driving your cold car....

I found some OE's are running very low vacuum on their PCV Systems. This causes a delayed failure of the oil control rings by sticking them in the ring land. They delay will depend on the type of oil used and how often it's changed. Just hook a vacuum gauge or what I use is a digital HVAC gauge set to Vac inH2O and you'll see it's well below -1 to -3inHg. Probably around -.3 to -.9inH2O. Replace the PCV Valve and make sure that's not stuck and check again. Acura/Honda does the same thing and has the same problem. Use a group IV syn oil to go around the problem but on my MDX I changed the PCV System to the higher vacuum to fix it. If you don't change it you'll need to change your oil every 3-4K miles like many do. The oil gets contaminated early bc of this design of the PCV Valve. Good Luck.
