Too Cute to Spook Disappearing 9 Patch Quilted Table Runner Using a Charm Pack

WHAT I USED:
The charm pack I used is Too Cute to Spook by Moda - you can buy it here - www.anniescatalog.com/detail....
I bound the edge with rick rack (two packages) and fabric I found at Joann's. I suggest a black and white fabric for the binding because the orange is really hard to match!
If you are interested in adding the rick rack (orange bit next to binding)
Sew the rick rack on the quilt first, lining up the edges of the bump with the edge of the top. Just sew four strips on, don't try to turn the corner with the rick rack. Then sew the binding down on top with a 1/4 inch seam. Just the bumps will stick out of the binding seam.

This is my go-to pattern of all time! It’s perfect for chain piecing and you can make a decent size quilt really quickly. Use a different set of fabrics and it looks different every time. Thank you for sharing, it really deserves a wide audience. 😁

One thing that really stood out in this tutorial is how you take the time to explain the "why" behind each of the techniques, which makes it easier to apply them to other projects. If you had just said (for example) "I like to lay out my fabrics with the bold pattern in the center" it would have been easy for viewers to just think, "Oh, it's personal preference" or that you should always put the bold one in the middle. Knowing that it's because it'll get cut into the smallest pieces means if you're doing a pattern where the center *isn't* the block that gets reduced the most, you'll know to arrange the squares accordingly. Lovely tutorial, thank you so much for posting it.

This is a super question with a short and long, way more than you bargained for, answer:) Short answer: No, don't wash charm packs before you start. Long answer: I don't often use precuts because I DO like to prewash my fabrics. Precuts are great BECAUSE they are precut! They are ready to sew, especially if you used a pattern designed for them like this one so they are already the correct size for the project. If you wash them you will need to iron them, and then trim the threads hanging off the edges, and potentially trim them all to make them all the same size again. One by each little one.... So no, I don't recommend washing them, because that kind of defeats the purpose of them and is a huge time sink. But I say I like to prewash my fabrics (because I like to preshrink and eliminate all potential of colors bleeding) - so why would I do a video with precuts? I show patterns like this because I like to inspire beginners to learn to quilt and using precuts eliminates a couple of big stumbling blocks - learning to rotary cut and picking out a bunch of coordinating fabrics. In my beginner course I actually make a big point of teaching those things, because in the long term you don't want to be limited to precut sizes and the fabric selections other people make for you. But for your purposes, making a holiday gift for someone - they are PERFECT! Just don't wash them and spoil your groove! Hopefully that wasn't an overwhelming answer :)

This was a great help. Although I have a question. I would like to make more than one table runner with the charm pack. I like having a table runners smaller that it can remain on the table and not be in the way. A smaller center piece. Also I give them as gifts. Anyway, so how would I use the same technique, but smaller in width and length?

Glad it helped. You can easily make it shorter just by using fewer blocks :) In terms of making it narrower, that's more difficult. It finishes at 13" wide including a 1/2 inch binding. If you wanted to use the exact same pattern you could start with smaller squares to begin with - like 4" squares - but that would mean you would have to cut them. If you went that route I would recommend cutting them from fat quarters or fat eights, not cutting down a charm pack because it would be a futzy nightmare to get all those charm squares neatly cut down IMHO YMMV. OR You could use a similar pattern with your charm squares - a disappearing four patch pattern - I have a TikTok about that block pattern here - www.tiktok.com/@prettysimplesara/video/7072484934291754286?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc&web_id=7257899859051021826 A single disappearing four patch block made from four 5" charm squares should be about 8". You would want to have the charm squares match like in the video, or at least be light and dark like that to get that same effect. Though other effects could be cool too. [I may put that on my list for the fall when I get back to making videos!] OR even just sewing a basic patchwork with a charm pack will look nice. Two patches across will give you a 9.5 inch finished width for a tablerunner. At that width it really doesn't have to be a complicated piecing pattern, the fabric choices can carry a simple pattern and look really really nice. I don't know what your sewing level is, but if you are a beginner you should take in to consideration that as you make the pieces smaller it can get more frustrating and time consuming.
